For a farm machinery or maintenance workshop, the main heating choices are fixed radiant or infrared heaters, warm-air systems, and other workplace systems such as water-based or underfloor heating. The right fit depends on where people work, how much of the building needs heat, ventilation and fire hazards, and the energy and installation available—not just a thermostat setting.
Compare the main farm shop heating options
Heating systems deliver warmth differently. A locally directed radiant heater may suit an occupied work bay, while a warm-air system is intended to heat a broader volume. Neither is automatically best: building conditions, work patterns, ventilation, and safe installation determine suitability.
| Option | How it delivers heat | Potential fit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed radiant or infrared | Directs radiant energy toward people and objects rather than first heating all the surrounding air. | A defined work zone or a large space where heating the entire air volume is undesirable. | Positioning matters. NFU Mutual recommends fixed electric infrared heaters or oil/gas-fired heat exchangers in its farm fire-prevention guidance, and identifies LPG, paraffin, and open-bar radiant heaters as unsuitable because of fire potential. This is category-level guidance, not approval of a particular installation. |
| Warm-air | Moves heated air into a broader space. The Energy Technology List describes indirect-fired packaged equipment with a burner, heat exchanger, and fan, and distinguishes it from direct-fired equipment. | When broader space heating is needed rather than warmth directed mainly at a particular work area. | The Energy Technology List says direct-fired heaters are not eligible under that list. Scheme eligibility does not establish that a system is suitable or safe for a particular workshop. |
| Other workplace systems | HSE lists hot-air systems, water-based central heating, combined heating and ventilation, electrical heaters, underfloor systems, and overhead systems. | When building layout, existing services, or the work pattern makes an alternative approach appropriate. | HSE cautions that in some situations the benefit from most systems may be limited to the immediate area around the heat source; this is a menu of approaches, not a product ranking. |

Choose by coverage, work, and building conditions
Before comparing products, define what needs to be comfortable and when. A workshop used intermittently for repairs presents a different heating problem from a space occupied throughout a shift. Consider these factors together:

- Coverage: Is warmth needed at one bench or bay, across several occupied zones, or throughout the workshop?
- Building: Consider floor area and height, insulation, draughts, door size, and how often large doors are opened.
- Work and occupancy: Account for task duration, strenuous work, vehicle movement, hot work, and whether workers are present continuously or intermittently.
- Heat delivery and air movement: Compare targeted radiant warmth with heating a larger air volume. Consider whether draughts, extraction, or fresh-air requirements will carry heated air away.
- Energy and installation: Check available electricity or fuel, safe siting, flue or exhaust needs, electrical capacity, and installation constraints.
- Fire and maintenance: Assess combustible materials, fuels, dust, hot surfaces, equipment protection, servicing, and safe shutdown when the space is unattended.
- Controls: Zoning and occupancy schedules can help match operation to when and where work occurs. The Energy Technology List includes optimising controllers for radiant systems; compatibility depends on the equipment.
There is no universal efficiency winner or established installed-cost or payback figure for every workshop. Those comparisons depend on the building, system design, operating pattern, and energy tariffs.
Assess comfort, not just air temperature
Air temperature alone does not determine whether a workplace feels comfortable. HSE identifies six relevant factors: air temperature, radiant temperature, air movement, humidity, clothing and personal protective equipment insulation, and work rate. A worker doing strenuous work in protective clothing may experience the same air temperature differently from someone standing still at a bench.

Heating cannot be separated from workshop processes. Fumes, flammable vapours, combustible dust, fuels, oils, paint thinners, grease, welding, and extraction requirements can all affect where and how a heater may be used. A system that warms an area but conflicts with extraction or creates an ignition hazard is not a sound choice.

Practical steps before specifying a system
- Map the occupied areas and work schedule. Identify which bays need warmth, at what times, and for which tasks.
- Record building and air conditions. Note height, insulation, draughts, door use, existing ventilation, and any extraction requirements.
- List process and fire hazards. Include fuels, vapours, dust, hot work, vehicle movements, and combustible storage; determine what controls are needed before selecting a heater.
- Compare delivery types and infrastructure. Decide whether targeted radiant heat or broader warm-air heating better matches the work, then check available fuel or electricity and installation requirements.
- Have the site and installation assessed. Resolve heater position, clearances, controls, ventilation, electrical or fuel arrangements, maintenance, and shutdown arrangements with competent specialists under the rules that apply locally.
