How should you prune tomato plants? First identify whether yours is determinate or indeterminate, then remove suckers selectively to suit its support system and your harvest goals. Pruning can open the canopy and help fruit ripen, but too much foliage removal can reduce total yield and expose fruit to sunscald.

Indeterminate tomatoes are the main candidates for regular sucker pruning. Determinate tomatoes generally need less pruning, and recommendations vary by variety and growing system. Keep enough leaf cover to shade fruit, and clean tools between plants.

First, Identify Your Tomato Type

Check the seed packet, catalogue, or plant label before removing suckers. Determinate tomatoes stop growing after setting a terminal bud; indeterminate tomatoes continue growing and producing flowers and fruit through the season until cold or frost ends growth. The right pruning approach also depends on how you plan to support the plant.

Plant type Growth habit Pruning approach
Determinate Bushy; growth ends at a terminal bud Generally prune less. Follow advice suited to the variety and support system; avoid aggressive sucker removal.
Indeterminate Continues growing and producing through the season Can be trained to one or two leaders with selective sucker removal.

Extension guidance differs on determinate plants. Wisconsin Extension recommends pruning indeterminate tomatoes only. Iowa State advises removing determinate suckers up to the first flower cluster, while UNH describes a basket-weave approach that retains the sucker just below that cluster and allows growth above it. Treat those as system-specific options, not one universal rule.

What Tomato Suckers Are

A sucker is a shoot growing in the angle between the main stem and a leaf branch, called the leaf axil. It is leafy growth, not a flower cluster. A sucker left in place can develop into a stem with leaves, flowers, fruit, and further suckers.

For an indeterminate tomato trained to one leader, remove suckers as they appear. For two leaders, keep the sucker just below the lowest flower or fruit cluster as the second stem and remove the others selectively. Small suckers can be pinched by hand; scissors or hand pruners are useful for larger ones.

How Pruning Affects Yield, Airflow, and Shade

Opening a dense canopy can improve airflow and help foliage dry, and removing lower leaves that touch or approach soil can reduce soil splash. These steps may help manage disease pressure, but pruning does not guarantee disease prevention.

Pruning also has costs. Cornell Garden-Based Learning reports that staking and pruning indeterminate tomatoes can hasten first harvest by a week or more and produce larger fruit, but usually reduces total yield. Cornell also notes greater susceptibility to blossom-end rot and sunscald in staked and pruned plants. UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program warns that severe one-stem pruning can greatly reduce total crop and increase some diseases or disorders. Retain enough foliage to shade fruit.

When to Prune

Use plant stage rather than a fixed calendar date. Wisconsin Extension recommends starting when the first flowers are open, then pruning again as needed every 10 to 14 days. It suggests stopping one to two weeks before expected first harvest so a protective canopy can develop. These are recommendations from Wisconsin Extension, revised February 2021, not universal timing thresholds; adapt them to your variety, climate, and growing system.

Avoid stripping foliage shortly before fruit ripens, especially where sun is intense. If your plants are already carrying exposed fruit, leave enough canopy to provide shade.

Choose a Support and Training Method

Match the support system to the plant type and the number of leaders you plan to keep. UNH Extension describes basket-weave support using sturdy stakes and twine for determinate plants or topped indeterminate plants. Its overhead trellis method is intended for indeterminate tomatoes and uses a strong overhead support, twine, and clips to train one or two leaders.

Support method Plant and training fit What to consider
Outdoor stakes and basket weave Determinate plants or topped indeterminate plants Add twine layers as plants grow; choose pruning guidance for the cultivar and system.
Overhead trellis with twine and clips Indeterminate plants trained to one or two leaders Needs strong overhead support and regular training.

UNH Extension notes that a high-tunnel tomato plant can weigh 30 pounds or more at peak fruit set, illustrating why a support system must be sturdy. That figure is specific to its high-tunnel context, not a universal load estimate for every garden tomato.

Step-by-Step: How to Prune Selectively

  1. Identify the plant type. Check the label or seed information, then decide whether the plant is determinate or indeterminate.
  2. Choose the support and leader count. For an indeterminate plant, decide whether to train one or two leaders. For a two-leader plant, the commonly retained second stem is the sucker just below the lowest flower or fruit cluster.
  3. Find the suckers. Look in the angle where a leaf branch meets the main stem. Distinguish leafy shoots from flower clusters before cutting.
  4. Remove unwanted small suckers. Pinch tender shoots by hand. Use scissors or hand pruners for larger growth, taking care not to damage the main stem.
  5. Prune determinate plants conservatively. Follow guidance for the variety and support system. Do not apply indeterminate pruning rules aggressively to a determinate plant.
  6. Keep tools clean between plants. Clean scissors or hand pruners between plants to reduce the chance of transferring disease.
  7. Recheck as the plant grows. Wisconsin Extension recommends repeat pruning every 10 to 14 days as needed and stopping one to two weeks before expected first harvest to allow protective foliage to develop.

Common Pruning Mistakes

  • Pruning without identifying the plant. Determinate and indeterminate plants do not have the same growth habit or pruning needs.
  • Removing flower clusters by mistake. Check that a shoot is a leafy sucker before removing it.
  • Removing too much foliage. Severe pruning can reduce total crop and leave fruit exposed to sunscald.
  • Treating airflow as a cure for disease. Canopy opening may help leaves dry, but it does not guarantee disease prevention.
  • Ignoring the support system. Select a method that suits the plant type and the leaders you intend to keep.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I prune tomato plants?

Identify the plant type first. For an indeterminate plant trained to two leaders, Wisconsin Extension recommends keeping the sucker just below the lowest flower or fruit cluster as the second stem and removing other suckers selectively. Prune determinate plants less aggressively and follow guidance suited to their variety and support system.

Which tomatoes should I prune?

Indeterminate tomatoes are the main candidates for regular sucker pruning. Determinate tomatoes generally require less pruning, though specific recommendations differ among Extension sources and growing systems.

When should I prune my tomatoes?

Wisconsin Extension recommends starting when the first flowers open, repeating as needed every 10 to 14 days, and stopping one to two weeks before expected first harvest. Adjust to plant stage and local conditions rather than relying on a fixed calendar date.

Can pruning reduce tomato yield?

Yes. Cornell Garden-Based Learning reports that staking and pruning indeterminate tomatoes usually reduces total yield even as fruit tends to be larger and the first harvest may be earlier. UC Statewide Integrated Pest Management Program warns that severe one-stem pruning can greatly reduce the total crop.

Should I remove all tomato suckers?

Not necessarily. For an indeterminate plant trained to one leader, remove suckers; for two leaders, keep the sucker just below the lowest flower or fruit cluster. Determinate plants generally need less pruning, and the best approach depends on the cultivar and support method.

How can I reduce sunscald when pruning?

Keep enough leaf canopy to shade fruit, and avoid severe pruning as fruit develops. Cornell Garden-Based Learning notes that staked and pruned plants are more susceptible to sunscald.
