They are not uniformly long-lived perennials: Iowa State and Nebraska Extension say many garden delphiniums last about two to three years, while North Carolina State University Extension gives three to five years for Delphinium elatum specifically. In hot, humid regions, expect a shorter-lived or seasonal display rather than a permanent planting.
Are Delphiniums Right for Your Garden?
Delphiniums prefer cool summers. North Carolina State University Extension notes that humid summer climates south of USDA Zone 7 can be challenging, while University of Florida IFAS Extension describes delphinium as a winter annual that fades when summer temperatures rise. Local conditions matter, so consider summer heat and humidity as well as your hardiness zone.
Choose a sunny, sheltered site with fertile soil that retains some moisture but drains well. In especially hot areas, afternoon shade may help. Avoid waterlogged ground and exposed locations where wind and rain can damage tall flower spikes.
Choosing a Delphinium Type
Garden delphiniums vary widely in size. Compact selections can suit the front or middle of a border; taller hybrids make striking background plants but often need support. Choose for mature height, local heat and humidity, and shelter—not color alone.

| Type or example | Reported height | Garden consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Chinese delphinium (Delphinium grandiflorum) | About 2–3 feet | A shorter option; height is reported by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. |
| Belladonna types | About 3–4 feet | Multiple stems; provide a sheltered site. |
| Connecticut Yankee and Magic Fountain | About 2–3 feet | Examples listed by Nebraska Extension. |
| Million Dollar series | About 2.5–3 feet | Nebraska Extension describes these as very heat tolerant; this is not a guarantee of long life in every garden. |
| New Millenium | About 3–4 feet | May need support depending on site and growth. |
| Pacific Giant | About 3–6 feet | Usually grown from seed, so flower color can vary; tall plants may need staking. |
These are reported cultivar descriptions, not guarantees for every plant or garden. Tall delphiniums are best placed toward the back of a border, where their flower spikes can be supported and their height will not obstruct a path.
How to Plant and Care for Delphiniums
- Choose a suitable site. Find a sunny, sheltered location with fertile, well-drained soil. In particularly hot areas, afternoon shade may help.
- Plant without burying the crown. Set the plant at its growing level. Planting too deeply, like poor drainage, can contribute to crown rot.
- Water during dry spells. Keep soil from drying out, but do not let the crown sit in waterlogged ground.
- Support tall plants early. Install stakes or other supports early in the growing season, before flower spikes become vulnerable and before later work risks damaging roots. Tall stems are hollow and brittle; wind and rain can bend or snap them.
- Feed with local conditions in mind. Iowa State and Nebraska Extension describe delphiniums as heavy feeders and recommend feeding in early spring and later in the season. Follow the fertilizer label and let local soil conditions guide product choice and amount.
- Cut back after flowering and clean up. Cut spent spikes back toward basal foliage; this may prompt a smaller late-season bloom. Remove old stems and plant debris, provide good air circulation, and avoid overhead irrigation to reduce disease risks.
How Long Do Delphiniums Last?
Plan for a limited lifespan rather than assuming every delphinium will return for many years. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and Nebraska Extension report that many garden delphiniums last about two to three years. North Carolina State University Extension gives a range of three to five years for D. elatum; that species-profile range is not a guarantee for every hybrid or climate.

- Huge , colorful spires grow to 4' tall. This wonderful perennial is great along fences or as a natural fence-row. Acts as a bee magnet. I find it to be a great companion crop for squash and melons. Blue, white, and pink flowers. Prefers cool weather. Perennial Growing Instructions: It is best to chill these seeds in the refrigerator for 1 week before planting. I cover them lightly with a damp (not wet!) potting soil mix and put them in the coolest part of the basement.
- Delphinium seeds are particularly susceptible to “damping off” fungus. It is always best to use a biological fungicide like “Rootshield” when starting large numbers of seeds. Start seeds in a sterile seed-starting mix. Moisten the mix and sprinkle seeds on the surface. Lightly cover with additional mix. Cover the tray (or container) with plastic wrap and place in a refrigerator for 7-10 days (this step is not absolutely necessary, but improves germination rate).
- After a week or so, remove the tray from the refrigerator and discard the plastic wrap covering. Place in a warm, well-lit area. Lightly water once a day making sure to keep the soil moist, NOT wet. I use a sprayer for watering. Ideal germination temperature is 72F.
Heat, humidity, drainage, and plant type all affect how a delphinium performs. In hot, humid regions, a seasonal display or regular replacement may be more realistic than relying on the plant as permanent structure.
Common Problems and Safety
Common problems include crown rot, leaf spots, botrytis blight, powdery mildew, slugs, and snails. Good drainage, sunlight, airflow, avoiding overhead irrigation, and removing old stems and debris address several preventable risk factors. For diagnosis or treatment, consult your local extension service rather than applying an unsupported pesticide schedule.

Choose a sheltered site and install stakes or supports early in the growing season. Tall flower spikes are hollow and brittle, and wind and rain can bend or snap them.
Can delphiniums grow in hot, humid climates?
They may grow, but hot, humid summers can make them challenging and shorten their useful life. In particularly hot areas, afternoon shade may help; in Florida, extension guidance treats delphinium as a winter annual that fades as summer temperatures rise.
