The Oasa R1 proposed an unusual combination: the clean, scissor-like cut of a traditional reel mower with autonomous navigation based on LiDAR, cameras, inertial sensing, and 3D mapping. That makes it technically interesting—but it began as a Kickstarter project, not an established retail mower. The available sources do not verify current stock, final production specifications, shipping completion, warranty support, or a current purchase price.
What makes the Oasa R1 different?
Most robotic lawn mowers use a horizontally spinning rotary blade. Oasa’s R1 was designed around a reel cutter instead: several helical blades rotate against a fixed bed knife, cutting grass in a shearing action similar to a manual push reel mower.
Oasa presented the R1 as a consumer robotic reel mower with automatic sharpening, close edge cutting, wire-free mapping, automatic docking, rain response, and smart-home connectivity. Those are manufacturer and campaign claims reported by Hackster and listed on the Kickstarter campaign page; the available material does not independently test them.
The central idea is compelling: autonomous mowing does not have to mean accepting the rougher cutting action of a rotary blade. But the same reel mechanism that can produce a fine finish is also less forgiving of long, wet, coarse, or debris-filled grass.

Reel cutting versus rotary cutting
| Feature | Reel mower | Rotary mower |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting action | Helical blades pass against a fixed bed knife in a shearing motion. | A horizontal blade cuts by impact beneath the mower deck. |
| Best conditions | Short, regularly maintained, relatively smooth turf. | A wider range of ordinary residential lawn conditions. |
| Potential advantage | A clean, visually fine cut when sharp and correctly adjusted. | Greater tolerance of occasional overgrowth and varied grass. |
| Main drawback | Requires precise alignment and is sensitive to wet grass, debris, and uneven ground. | A dull blade can tear or shred grass rather than cutting cleanly. |
A reel cutter is therefore not automatically better. On fine, frequently mowed turf, it may offer a more attractive finish and less tearing. On a lawn that is allowed to grow tall, contains sticks and stones, or has rough ground, a rotary system may be more practical and forgiving.
What does “self-resharpening” mean?
The Kickstarter listing identifies self-resharpening blades as an R1 feature, and Hackster reported Oasa’s automatic sharpening claim. In principle, an integrated sharpening process could help maintain the cutting relationship between the rotating reel and fixed bed knife.
However, “self-resharpening” should not be read as “maintenance-free.” The available sources do not establish how the sharpening mechanism operates, whether it maintains the correct reel-to-bed-knife geometry, how often it runs, or how long it preserves cut quality. Owners would still reasonably need to inspect the reel, remove packed grass and debris, check adjustment, and replace worn components when necessary.
How the R1 was supposed to navigate
Oasa’s autonomy stack combines several sensing methods:
Recommended Free Tools
- LiDAR: measures distances to objects and surfaces around the mower.
- Cameras: provide visual information that can help interpret the scene.
- Inertial measurement unit: tracks acceleration and rotation.
- Visual-inertial odometry: combines camera movement with inertial data to estimate the mower’s position.
- Point-cloud mapping: creates a spatial representation of the garden for movement planning and boundary recognition.
That combination is intended to reduce or eliminate the need for conventional perimeter wire or an RTK base station. Hackster reported a claimed setup time of as little as 15 minutes after unboxing.
There is an important difference between mapping a garden and autonomously mowing it reliably. A production mower must also know where it is after wheel slip or physical movement, distinguish grass from driveways and flower beds, recognize people, pets, toys, branches, and other obstacles, cut close to irregular edges, and recover from blocked paths or failed docking.

The supplied coverage confirms the sensor and mapping concept, but not independent accuracy measurements, obstacle-detection results, slope limits, narrow-passage performance, or reliability in difficult lighting and weather. LiDAR and cameras can also be affected by dirt, rain, mud, condensation, glare, shadows, and obstructed views.
“No boundary wire” does not mean zero setup
Wire-free navigation can remove the labor of burying or fastening a perimeter cable, but the property still has to be defined correctly. Depending on the final software and workflow, owners might need to map the lawn, identify no-go areas, verify flower beds and ponds, account for gravel or drop-offs, and confirm that the charging dock has a clear approach.

A 15-minute setup claim could mean that the mower starts its initial mapping process in 15 minutes. It is not necessarily the same as complete, safe configuration. Hardware assembly, app installation, account creation, firmware updates, map editing, boundary verification, and safety checks may all be separate steps.
The available sources do not document the complete R1 setup workflow or explain how it handles garden changes, disconnected lawn areas, sensor outages, or incorrect boundary interpretation.
Claimed specifications
The following figures are campaign-era claims or listings, not independent test results.
| Item | Reported or listed figure |
|---|---|
| Cutting time | Up to 2 hours |
| Charging time | About 4 hours |
| Charging | Wireless charging dock |
| Setup | As little as 15 minutes, according to Oasa’s reported claim |
| Cutting height | 0.8–4 inches, listed by Kickstarter |
| Communications | Dual-band Wi-Fi and LoRa |
| Weather response | Returns to the dock when rain is detected |
| Smart-home integrations | Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home were reported |
Runtime depends on grass height, terrain, cutting height, temperature, route efficiency, and mowing frequency. Two hours of cutting does not equal two hours of continuous coverage in a complicated garden, and a roughly four-hour recharge cycle could materially affect a mowing schedule.

What kind of lawn could suit the R1?
The design would be most plausible for owners with:
- Frequently mowed, relatively smooth turf.
- Clearly defined lawn boundaries.
- Grass varieties suited to close mowing.
- Few loose objects, sticks, stones, or toys.
- An interest in app-based setup and autonomous equipment.
It could be a poor fit for lawns that are routinely overgrown, steep, deeply rutted, soft, heavily shaded, or filled with exposed roots and irregular obstacles. Wet grass and coarse weeds are also conditions in which a reel cutter generally becomes less forgiving. These are practical implications of the mechanism and navigation approach, not confirmed R1 test results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Edge cutting: promising, but not the same as eliminating trimming
The Kickstarter listing includes neat edge cutting. That matters because many robotic mowers leave an uncut strip beside walls, fences, raised borders, and other vertical edges.
The claim does not establish how close the R1 can cut in every situation. Important unanswered questions include whether the reel extends beyond the wheel track, whether it can cut against a vertical wall, how it handles irregular or raised borders, and whether a clean result depends on a level, unobstructed edge.
Until those details are demonstrated, “neat edge cutting” should not be translated into “no string trimming ever.” Manual finishing may still be necessary around walls, posts, edging stones, and other hard-to-reach areas.

Kickstarter and availability reality check
Oasa’s campaign ran from June 25 through August 14, 2024. Kickstarter reports that it raised $2,329,458 from 1,790 backers against a $50,000 goal. The campaign page was last updated July 2, 2025.
Hackster reported a $1,199 Super Early Bird hardware price and described it as a $400 discount from a planned $1,599 retail price. Those were campaign-era figures, not a verified current deal. A successful crowdfunding campaign does not by itself prove that finished production units shipped to all backers or that a supported retail product exists.
As of September 2026, the supplied sources do not verify current stock, final specifications, completed delivery, warranty terms, replacement-part availability, software support, or a functioning retail purchase path. Anyone considering an order should check the official company site linked from the campaign, oasalife.com, rather than relying on the old early-bird price.
What to verify before paying
- Is the mower currently in stock and sold as a retail product rather than a crowdfunding pledge?
- What is the complete delivered price, including shipping and taxes?
- What warranty and return policy apply in your country?
- Are replacement reels, bed knives, batteries, wheels, and sensors available?
- What lawn area, passage width, slope, and terrain does the final production model support?
- Are HomeKit, Alexa, and Google Home integrations live and supported?
- Does the mower require a subscription or continuing cloud service?
- What happens if Wi-Fi, cameras, LiDAR, or other localization data become unavailable?
- What safety features are documented for lifting, tilting, children, pets, theft, and remote stopping?
- How will the company support the mower if the project or service is discontinued?
How it compares with more established categories
The R1’s relevant comparison is not simply “one robot mower versus another.” It is a choice between a potentially finer reel cut and the broader tolerance of rotary systems, as well as between an early-stage crowdfunded product and ecosystems with longer-established retail or dealer support.
- Husqvarna Automower is relevant to buyers prioritizing an established robotic-mower ecosystem and service network, typically with rotary cutting.
- Mammotion LUBA is relevant to buyers seeking wire-free or RTK-oriented navigation and stronger terrain capability; it uses rotary cutting rather than a reel.
- Segway Navimow is another wire-free, app-mapped rotary-cutting alternative.
- Worx Landroid represents a more conventional robotic-mower category, including models associated with boundary-wire installation.
These alternatives are not presented as hands-on-tested replacements, and current prices, stock, warranty terms, and model availability should be checked directly with each manufacturer.
Verdict
The Oasa R1 was a technically ambitious proposal rather than a routine robot-mower refresh. Its reel cutter addresses a real criticism of rotary mowing: a dull or aggressive blade can tear grass, while a properly maintained reel can produce a clean shearing cut. That makes the R1 most interesting for owners of smooth, regularly maintained turf who value finish quality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe trade-off is equally important. Reel systems demand better grass conditions and more precise maintenance, while autonomous mapping must prove that it can handle real gardens—not just create an attractive map. The supplied sources do not independently verify the R1’s cut quality, obstacle avoidance, runtime, slope performance, edge results, or long-term sharpening.
For now, the largest practical concern is availability and ownership risk. Treat the R1 as an intriguing crowdfunded concept whose campaign claims require verification, not as a currently established mower available at the old $1,199 price.
