If your TV picture is enlarged, cropped, stretched, or surrounded by unexpected borders, the usual cause is a Zoom, Aspect Ratio, Picture Size, or Overscan setting. Leave the affected program on screen, open the TV’s picture or display settings, and choose 16:9, Original, Screen Fit, Fit to Screen, Just Scan, or Full Pixel—whichever option shows the complete image without distortion.
Menu names vary by brand, model year, firmware, region, and input. Also remember that a cable box, streaming player, game console, computer, or individual app can apply its own scaling.
Identify the symptom first

The fastest universal fix
- Keep the affected source visible. Picture-size controls may differ between the TV home screen, built-in apps, and HDMI inputs.
- Press Settings, Menu, Home, or Quick Settings on the TV remote.
- Open Picture, Screen, or Display.
- Find Aspect Ratio, Picture Size, Screen Format, Wide Mode, or Display Area.
- Select the least-cropped option available: Original, Normal, Screen Fit, Fit to Screen, Just Scan, Full Pixel, or the appropriate 16:9 setting.
- Avoid Zoom, Wide Zoom, Cinema Zoom, Pan & Scan, and similar enlargement modes.
- If the TV offers manual zoom or position controls, reset horizontal and vertical position to their defaults.
If the TV menu itself is cropped, begin with the TV’s settings. If the TV menu looks normal but an external device is cropped, check that device as well.
Brand-specific instructions
LG webOS TVs
On LG TVs using webOS 6.0 or later, LG’s general path is Settings → All Settings → Picture → Aspect Ratio → User Selection. Choose the normal, non-zoomed option shown for your model. LG identifies Zoom, Cinema Zoom, All-Direction Zoom, and Vertical Zoom as modes that can enlarge and truncate the picture. LG’s support guide notes that options vary.

If the problem occurs only through a cable or satellite box, check that box’s remote for a Zoom, Format, or Aspect button. LG specifically warns that an accidental set-top-box zoom command can enlarge the image. See LG’s resolution and display guidance.
Samsung Smart TVs
Try Settings → All Settings → Picture → Picture Size Settings. Depending on the model and region, choose 16:9 Standard, Fit to Screen, or Screen Fit. If Custom is selected, reset its zoom and position controls. Samsung may restrict some choices for particular signals or inputs, so make the change while the affected source is active. If video is normal but menus or text are magnified, check Accessibility for Magnification or Zoom Menu and Text. These are separate from video aspect-ratio settings. See Samsung’s accessibility instructions.

Sony BRAVIA TVs
Look under Home or Quick Settings → Settings → Screen. On newer models, the path may be Settings → Display & Sound → Screen → Wide mode.
- Normal can preserve certain 4:3 or letterboxed presentations.
- Full fills the panel, but on some models can still enlarge the image with overscan.
- Full Pixel, when available, is intended to show the entire digital image without overscan.
- Avoid Wide Zoom and Zoom when you want the complete frame.
Sony’s Wide Mode guide explains that Auto can change the mode when the channel or signal changes. If the TV keeps returning to zoomed or stretched presentation, select a fixed mode if your model permits it. Menu availability depends on the BRAVIA model, resolution, channel, and input.
Apple TV and Mac
For a Mac connected to the TV, open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays, select the TV, and adjust Underscan if the control is available. Apple says that if the Mac does not provide this control, the adjustment may need to be made on the TV itself. Relevant TV labels include Zoom, Aspect Ratio, Screen Fit, Screen Fill, Computer Mode, and Format. See Apple’s overscan and underscan instructions.

On Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, try Settings → AirPlay and Apple Home → AirPlay Display Underscan. Older Apple TV software may use Settings → Audio & Video → Adjust for AirPlay Overscan. Change one device at a time and retest, because both the TV and Apple device can scale the image.
Roku
Roku’s official display controls focus on resolution and compatibility rather than a universal zoom slider. Open Settings → Display type and allow Roku to detect the display or select a supported resolution. If the Roku home screen is cropped, correct the TV’s picture-size or display-area setting. If only one title or app is affected, test another title and app before changing global settings. Controls vary by Roku model, software, resolution, and HDR support. Open All settings → Display & Sound. Depending on the connected equipment, available controls may include resolution, text scaling, dynamic range, color format, and matching the content frame rate. Google does not provide one universal zoom control for every app or title, so the TV’s own picture-size setting may still be responsible. See Google’s display-settings guide.

Fire TV
Open Fire TV Settings and look under Display & Sounds for display, calibration, or screen-size controls. The exact path varies by Fire TV device and Fire OS version. If Fire TV menus fit but video is cropped, change the TV’s picture-size mode. Amazon documents how overscan can hide information at the edges in its Fire TV overscan documentation and safe-zone guidance.
What the common picture-size modes mean
- 16:9
- The usual shape for modern HDTV and 4K content. Use it when a standard widescreen source fills the screen without cropping or distortion.
- 4:3
- The shape used by much older television programming and some retro games. Correctly shown on a 16:9 TV, it normally has black bars on the left and right.
- Original or Normal
- Attempts to preserve the source’s proportions. This is often preferable for older or unusual formats.
- Screen Fit, Fit to Screen, Just Scan, or Full Pixel
- Usually the best choices when computer desktops, console interfaces, subtitles, or image edges are cut off. Exact behavior depends on the model.
- Full
- May fill the panel, but does not always mean “no overscan.” Sony, for example, distinguishes some Full modes from Full Pixel.
- Zoom, Wide Zoom, Cinema Zoom, or Pan & Scan
- Enlarges a picture to reduce or remove bars. It can crop edges, hide subtitles, or distort the presentation.
Aspect ratio, overscan, and underscan
A TV’s physical screen shape is not the same thing as the shape of every program. A 16:9 television can correctly show 4:3 material with vertical bars, a wide theatrical movie with horizontal bars, or a standard 16:9 broadcast without bars.
Letterboxing means black bars above and below a wide image. Films made in formats such as 2.35:1 or 2.40:1 may require substantial top and bottom bars on a 16:9 screen. Pillarboxing means bars on the left and right of a correctly displayed 4:3 image. Sony explains these presentations in its black-bar support article.

Overscan enlarges an image slightly so its outer edges disappear. It may be especially noticeable with computers, game consoles, and digital menus. Underscan does the opposite: the image becomes smaller than the usable screen area and may show a border on all sides. Apple describes both behaviors in its display troubleshooting guide.
Do not remove black bars automatically. If the image is correctly proportioned and the bars appear only on certain films or programs, zooming may crop important content or distort the image. “Fills the screen” and “shows the source correctly” are not always the same goal.
When an external device is causing the problem
Use a source-isolation test:
- Check whether the TV’s own menus are cropped.
- Try a built-in TV app or another HDMI input.
- Test a different title or channel.
- If only one source is affected, inspect that source’s resolution, display type, calibration, zoom, stretch, aspect, or format controls.
A cable or satellite box may have its own Zoom, Stretch, or Format command. A console may offer a screen-size calibration. A computer may use display scaling, a non-native resolution, or overscan compensation. A streaming app may enforce the title’s aspect ratio and provide no manual zoom control.
If the correct option is missing or the problem returns
- Option unavailable or grayed out: The signal, input, app, or resolution may not support that mode. Change the setting while the affected input is active.
- Mode changes after changing channels: Disable Auto aspect-ratio or Wide Mode if a fixed mode is available.
- Only one app remains cropped: Test other content. The title may use a different aspect ratio or the app may control presentation independently.
- TV looks normal but the device does not: Check the device’s output resolution, display type, calibration, and scaling controls.
- Problem began after changing hardware: Restart the source and TV, then check the HDMI cable or adapter and the input’s settings.
- Unplugging temporarily fixes it: This may indicate a temporary software or HDMI-handshake state. Note which input, app, and setting triggered the issue before assuming it is permanently resolved.
Restart devices and install appropriate software updates before considering a reset. A factory reset should be a last resort: it removes saved settings and account information and is not guaranteed to solve a scaling problem.

Contact the TV or device manufacturer if the TV’s menus are also corrupted or unreadable, picture-size controls are unavailable on every source, settings revert immediately after being saved, or the problem persists across built-in apps and all inputs. Support is also appropriate if you see geometric distortion, flickering, lines, or other signs of panel or hardware damage rather than simple cropping.
