Verdict: The Epson EcoTank ET-2850 is a good low-running-cost printer for households that print regularly, but it is not ideal for everyone. Its refillable tanks, automatic two-sided printing, scanner, copier, and wireless features suit families, students, and moderate home-office users. Its slow output, rear paper feed, basic controls, lack of an automatic document feeder, and older status matter just as much.
Buy it only when it is available at a competitive discount. Epson’s U.S. listing was checked on August 18, 2026 at $349.99 and out of stock, while the original U.S. launch MSRP was $299.99. RTINGS identifies the newer ET-2980 as its replacement, so compare both before paying a premium.
Quick verdict
| Best for | Not for |
|---|---|
| Regular household printing, worksheets, documents, recipes, copies, and occasional photos | Fast office work, multi-page scanning, faxing, Ethernet networks, or professional photography |
| Main advantage: very high rated ink yields and low ongoing ink costs | Main drawback: slow printing and no automatic document feeder |
| Buy when: discounted and cheaper than newer, better-equipped alternatives | Avoid when: priced near the ET-2980 or an ADF-equipped model |
Overall: A conditional buy for regular, moderate-volume home printing—not a universal “ideal home printer.”
What the ET-2850 does
The ET-2850 is a four-color, refillable-ink wireless all-in-one inkjet printer. It prints, scans from a flatbed, copies, and supports automatic two-sided printing. Connectivity includes Wi-Fi and USB, with mobile printing through Epson Smart Panel, Apple AirPrint, and Mopria.

- Innovative Cartridge-Free Printing ― High-capacity ink tanks mean no more tiny, expensive ink cartridges; Epson’s exclusive EcoFit ink bottles make filling easy and worry-free
- Impressive Print Quality ― Unique Micro Piezo Heat-Free Technology produces sharp text – plus impressive color photos and graphics – on virtually any paper type
- Zero Cartridge Waste – By using an EcoTank printer, you can help reduce the amount of cartridge waste ending up in landfills
- Built-in Scanner & Copier ― High-resolution flatbed scanner and a color display for easy document copying and navigation
It has a rear paper tray, but no fax, Ethernet, touchscreen, USB host port, NFC, or automatic document feeder (ADF). “All-in-one” therefore means print, scan, and copy—not every office function.

Running costs: economical, but not automatically cheap
The ET-2850’s main appeal is its refillable tank system. Epson rates replacement bottles for up to 7,500 black pages and 6,000 color pages. The included bottles are used partly during initial setup, so their practical yield should not be treated as identical to a complete replacement set.
Epson advertises up to 90% savings compared with conventional cartridges. That is Epson’s comparison claim, not a guarantee of every household’s savings. Your actual cost depends on monthly volume, page coverage, photo printing, paper, print quality, and ink used during maintenance.
As observed on Epson’s support/store page, an Epson 502 black bottle was listed at $24.99 and each cyan, magenta, and yellow bottle at $16.99. Prices can change, so verify the current cost of Epson 502 replacement ink before buying.
Only one color needs to be replaced when that tank is depleted, but all colors must remain available for printing and maintenance. Even black-focused users may consume some color ink during cleaning and other maintenance operations. Epson also markets claims such as “up to two years of ink”; the actual duration depends on print volume and page coverage.
A simple break-even test
- Estimate how many pages your household prints each month.
- Record the price difference between the ET-2850 and a conventional cartridge printer.
- Compare expected replacement ink costs—not just the printer’s purchase price.
- Add paper and a realistic allowance for cleaning and wasted ink.
- Consider convenience: fewer cartridge changes may be valuable even when the mathematical savings are modest.
If you print only a few pages per month, a cheaper cartridge printer may never be overtaken by the EcoTank’s lower consumable cost. Regular printing in the hundreds of pages per month makes the tank system easier to justify.
Print quality and speed
Black text
Black text is legible and generally sharp for normal household documents. Independent testing found the printer slower and less crisp at very small type sizes than stronger rivals, so it is better suited to everyday documents than demanding business output.

Color documents
Color documents are bright and vivid enough for worksheets, charts, forms, school projects, and household documents.
Photos
The ET-2850 can produce detailed, attractive occasional photos, but independent reviews disagree about color accuracy and depth. RTINGS reported color-accuracy problems, including a bluish cast in some images, while TechRadar found vivid output but limited depth and fine detail compared with better photo printers.
The fair conclusion is: good for occasional family photos and colorful documents, but not a dedicated or color-critical photo printer.
Duplex printing
Automatic two-sided printing is a significant benefit for schoolwork and longer documents. It saves paper without requiring manual page flipping, but duplex jobs take longer than basic single-sided black-text printing.

Do not buy the ET-2850 because it is fast. Epson’s specification sheet provides the official ISO figures, while independent testing reported roughly 10.5 pages per minute for monochrome simplex printing. Actual results vary with paper, image coverage, quality settings, and duplex mode. TechRadar and RTINGS both characterize its performance as modest rather than productivity-focused.
Scanning and copying
The color flatbed scanner has a maximum hardware resolution of 1,200 × 2,400 dpi, with interpolated resolution up to 9,600 dpi. The scan bed accommodates documents up to approximately 8.5 × 11.7 inches. Epson lists scan-to-computer and scan-to-email functions, while copying supports up to 20 copies and 25%–400% enlargement or reduction.
For a page, photograph, book page, or occasional form, this is adequate. The major weakness is the missing ADF. Every page of a tax return, contract, school packet, or multi-page application must be placed on the glass manually. The ET-2850 also cannot automatically scan both sides of a document.
Choose an ADF-equipped model if scanning several pages is a normal part of your workflow. The ET-2850’s flatbed is a convenience for occasional copying, not a substitute for document-handling hardware.

Setup, software, and wireless printing
Setup is straightforward in principle:
- Remove packaging and transport materials.
- Connect power and load paper into the rear tray.
- Turn on the printer and select the language and basic settings.
- Fill each tank with its matching included ink.
- Run the initial ink-charge process.
- Install Epson software or the Epson Smart Panel app.
- Connect the printer to your home Wi-Fi network.
- Print a test page or alignment sheet.
- Add the printer to computers and mobile devices.
Be careful to put every ink color in the correct tank. The initial bottles are intended for setup and are not for resale. Epson recommends genuine ink and warns that damage caused by unsuitable or third-party ink may not be covered by the warranty. That does not make third-party ink impossible, but it does make the risk a buyer should consciously accept.
For wireless problems, verify the SSID and password, restart both the router and printer, and check that the phone or computer is connected to the appropriate network. VPN software can interfere with network printing. If Wi-Fi setup continues to fail, try USB setup and install Epson’s current support software rather than relying on an old driver package. Epson’s ET-2850 user guide contains the model-specific procedures.
Design and everyday usability
At approximately 14.8 × 13.7 × 7.4 inches and 11.9 pounds, the ET-2850 is reasonably compact for a color all-in-one. Its small color display handles basic tasks, but it is not as convenient as a large touchscreen.
The rear input tray holds up to 100 sheets and the output area holds up to 30 plain-paper sheets. Rear loading is manageable for occasional printing, but it is less convenient than a front cassette if you want paper permanently loaded or need to position the printer close to a wall. There is also no Ethernet connection for a wired office network.
Maintenance and long-term use
The ET-2850 is still an inkjet. Leaving it unused for months can increase the risk of clogged nozzles or missing colors. Occasional use reduces that risk but cannot guarantee trouble-free operation. Print a test page before an important job rather than discovering a problem at the deadline.
If output contains gaps or missing colors:
- Print a nozzle-check pattern.
- Run a standard printhead cleaning.
- Wait before repeating the cleaning cycle.
- Print another nozzle check.
- Use deeper cleaning only when necessary because it consumes ink.
- Contact Epson support if the problem persists instead of repeatedly flushing the system.
High page coverage, borderless photos, high-quality modes, and cleaning cycles can reduce real-world yield below Epson’s standardized ratings. The printer can reduce cartridge waste compared with cartridge systems, but it is not impact-free: it still uses plastic bottles, paper, electricity, and ink.

Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-2980 when…
It is available at a similar price. RTINGS identifies the ET-2980 as the newer replacement, with faster printing and an updated design. It still lacks an ADF, so it is not the answer for frequent multi-page scanning. See the ET-2980 review context before deciding.
Choose the Epson EcoTank ET-3850 when…
You print more often and want easier paper handling. Its front-loading paper tray and stronger office-oriented feature set make it a better fit for a busier home office, although it may cost more. TechRadar provides additional ET-3850 review context.
Rank #4
- STRESS-FREE PRINTING — Epson EcoTank comes with enough ink to print up to 6,600 pages black/5,500 color¹⁰ for fewer out-of-ink frustrations. Each replacement ink bottle set is equivalent to about 80 cartridges¹¹
- SIMPLE INK REFILLING — Supersized ink tanks and uniquely keyed EcoFit bottles make refilling ink simple—no mess, no stress and no ink bottle mix-ups
- THE WORLD’S #1 SELLING SUPERTANK PRINTER² — Epson invented EcoTank to revolutionize the way people print; we’ve sold 100 million EcoTanks worldwide⁷ and this is our 7th generation of cartridge-free printers
- ADVANCED PRODUCTIVITY FEATURES — Fast 15 black/8 color ISO ppm print speeds with zero warmup time, built-in scanner, 100-sheet paper tray, auto duplex printing and a 1.44" color display for easy navigation
- STUNNING PRINT QUALITY — High 4800 x 1200 dpi print resolution for exceptional photos and text; enjoy amazing image quality on a wide range of media
Choose an ADF-equipped EcoTank when…
Multi-page scanning is important. RTINGS identifies the ET-4800 as an alternative with an ADF. The ET-3950 is a more capable step-up option with an ADF, automatic duplex scanning, a larger input tray, and a stronger scanner. These models are poor value if you rarely scan and only need simple printing.
Choose a laser all-in-one when…
You mainly print black text, need faster output, print in larger batches, or leave the printer unused for long periods. Laser printers avoid inkjet nozzle-drying concerns and are usually better for document productivity. Color laser models can cost more upfront and may have expensive color consumables; they also generally produce less natural photos than inkjets.
Who should buy the ET-2850?
- Families: A sensible fit for worksheets, forms, recipes, and moderate everyday printing.
- Students: Useful for regular assignments and paper-saving duplex printing, provided high speed is not essential.
- Remote workers: Suitable for moderate document output, but limited by the rear feed and lack of ADF and Ethernet.
- Photo users: Fine for occasional snapshots, not professional or color-critical work.
- Dorm or apartment users: Compact enough for many spaces, but rear loading requires clearance and planning.
- Occasional users: A poor fit if the printer may sit unused for months.
Final verdict
Yes, the Epson EcoTank ET-2850 can be an economical home printer for regular, moderate-volume printing where low ink cost and automatic duplexing matter.
No, it is not ideal for fast deadlines, large scanning projects, faxing, wired networking, long periods of inactivity, or serious photography.

Conditional buy: because it is an older model and availability may favor the ET-2980 or an ADF-equipped alternative. At a substantial discount, the ET-2850 remains a practical family printer. Near $349.99—or any price close to a newer, better-equipped model—look elsewhere first.
