Water a poinsettia when the surface of its potting mix feels dry—not according to a fixed calendar. Check the soil daily or very frequently. When the surface is dry, water thoroughly until excess runs from the drainage holes, let the pot drain completely, and then empty the saucer or decorative foil.

The simple poinsettia-watering routine

  1. Check the soil. Touch the surface of the potting mix. You can also check roughly 1 inch below the surface if the top layer is difficult to judge.
  2. Water when the surface feels dry. Do not wait for the poinsettia to become severely wilted.
  3. Water thoroughly. Apply enough water to moisten the root zone and produce drainage from the holes in the bottom of the pot.
  4. Let it drain. Do not leave the container sitting in water.
  5. Empty the saucer or foil wrapper. Remove excess water after the pot has finished draining.

This approach is recommended in guidance from the University of Illinois Extension, Penn State Extension, and the Royal Horticultural Society. Their wording differs slightly—soil that feels dry, or potting mix that is “just moist”—but the practical goal is the same: avoid both prolonged dryness and constantly soggy roots. How many days can a poinsettia go between waterings?

There is no reliable universal interval such as every three days or once a week. A poinsettia may need water sooner in a small pot, warm room, bright location, or dry, drafty area. A larger container in a cooler, less evaporative environment may remain moist for longer. Container size, potting mix, drainage, light, temperature, humidity, and airflow all affect how quickly the soil dries. [c001] [c002] [c005]

For that reason, “check daily, water when dry” is more useful than a calendar schedule. Daily checking does not mean daily watering. It means you catch the right moment before the plant becomes severely wilted, while still allowing the surface of the mix to dry between waterings.

How to tell whether the soil is dry

Use your finger to feel the surface of the growing medium. If it still feels damp, wait and check again later. If the surface feels dry, it is time to water thoroughly. Illinois Extension-related guidance also describes checking about 1 inch into the soil, which can be useful when the top layer is misleading. [c002] [c003]

If you have trouble judging dampness by touch, an indoor-plant soil moisture meter can be a convenient optional check. It is not required, and a meter does not replace inspecting the pot’s drainage or observing the plant’s condition. Avoid treating one meter reading as a universal rule for every poinsettia, since meters and potting mixes vary. [c001] [c002] [c003]

How to water a poinsettia correctly

When the surface of the mix is dry, pour water slowly and evenly over the soil rather than applying a few drops only around the stem. Continue until water begins to come out of the drainage holes. This flushes and wets the root zone more reliably than repeated small sips. Penn State Extension and Illinois Extension both caution against leaving the plant in collected water, because excess moisture can injure the roots. [c001] [c003] [c004]

A small indoor watering can with a narrow spout can make it easier to direct a controlled pour into the pot, especially when foliage or decorative containers are in the way. It is a convenience, not a requirement; any clean container can work if you can water evenly without disturbing the soil.

After watering, place the pot where it can drain fully. Wait until excess water has stopped running, then discard what remains in the saucer. Do not use the saucer as a reservoir.

What if water runs straight down the sides?

Very dry potting mix can shrink away from the sides of a container. Water may then run around the root ball and out of the bottom without evenly rehydrating the mix. If this happens, apply water slowly and give it time to soak in before adding more. Check the mix again afterward rather than assuming that drainage automatically means the entire root zone is moist. Extremely dry soil may need repeated, careful applications to become evenly damp. [c003]

Check decorative foil before watering

Holiday poinsettias are often sold inside decorative foil, plastic sleeves, or outer containers. These coverings can trap drainage water. Remove the wrapper while watering, or make sure it has drainage openings and place the pot over a saucer. Never let an unperforated wrapper hold water around the base of the pot. A plant saucer for indoor pots or waterproof plant tray can protect furniture while allowing excess water to collect temporarily. Its purpose is to catch drainage—not to keep the poinsettia standing in water. Empty it after the container drains. [c001] [c003] [c004]

Where the poinsettia sits changes how often you check it

Place the plant in bright, indirect light and keep it away from hot or cold drafts. Illinois Extension recommends about six hours of light daily, daytime temperatures around 60–70°F, and cooler nights near 55°F. The RHS gives a similar preferred daytime range of approximately 16–21°C (about 61–70°F), with bright light away from strong direct sunshine. [c001] [c002] [c003]

Avoid placing a poinsettia directly beside:

  • Radiators, heating vents, or fireplaces
  • Fans or strong air-conditioning outlets
  • Frequently opened exterior doors
  • Cold, drafty windows or glass

Warm, dry air can make the mix dry faster, while cold or poorly ventilated conditions can slow drying. Check more often in warm, dry air, but still water only when the surface of the mix has dried. Temperature alone should not determine the schedule. [c001] [c002] [c005]

Common poinsettia-watering mistakes

Watering once a week by habit

A weekly schedule may happen to suit one home but be too frequent or too infrequent in another. Use the soil condition as the trigger instead of the day of the week. [c001] [c002] [c005]

Waiting for severe wilting

Wilting is a late warning, not the preferred time to water. Penn State advises watering before wilting, and Illinois Extension notes that wilted poinsettias may drop their colorful bracts sooner. Check the mix before the plant visibly collapses. [c001] [c004]

Adding only a small amount of water

A few drops may wet only the top or one area of the pot. When the mix is dry at the surface, water thoroughly until drainage occurs, then remove the excess.

Leaving water in the saucer

Standing water keeps the root environment saturated and can contribute to root injury. Always empty the saucer or outer container after drainage. [c001] [c003] [c004]

Keeping the foil wrapper sealed around the pot

Decorative foil is not a substitute for drainage. Remove it during watering or provide openings that allow water to escape freely. [c001] [c003]

Putting the plant beside heat or a draft

Hot, dry air and cold drafts stress poinsettias and make the drying rate less predictable. A stable location with bright, indirect light is preferable. [c001] [c002] [c003]

How long will a well-watered poinsettia last?

With suitable light, temperature, and watering, a poinsettia can remain attractive indoors for several weeks. Illinois Extension gives a typical indoor display period of about six to eight weeks. Continue using the soil-moisture test throughout that period rather than switching to a rigid schedule. [c001] [c003]

If you keep the plant after the holidays, its longer-term care can involve changes to light, pruning, fertilization, and watering during dormancy. Those steps are part of keeping or reblooming the plant and are separate from the basic question of when to water it. Illinois Extension and Penn State Extension provide separate guidance for post-holiday care, outdoor placement after frost danger, and the long dark period needed for reblooming. [c001] [c004]

A quick checklist

  • Check the potting mix daily or very frequently.
  • Water when the surface feels dry.
  • Apply enough water for some to exit the drainage holes.
  • Let the pot drain completely.
  • Empty the saucer or decorative foil.
  • Keep the poinsettia in bright, indirect light.
  • Keep it away from radiators, vents, fireplaces, fans, doors, and cold drafts.
  • Do not let the pot remain in standing water.

The short answer: check a poinsettia’s soil every day, but water only when the surface feels dry. Water thoroughly, allow drainage, and remove the excess water immediately afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I water a poinsettia indoors?

There is no universal number of days. Check the soil daily or very frequently and water when the surface feels dry. A poinsettia in a small pot or warm, dry room may need water sooner than one in a larger pot or cooler room.

Should I water a poinsettia until water comes out of the bottom?

Yes. Water until excess runs from the drainage holes, allow the pot to drain completely, and then empty the saucer. Do not leave the poinsettia standing in water.

Can a poinsettia stay in its decorative foil wrapper?

Remove the foil while watering, or ensure it has openings that allow water to escape. Decorative foil can trap water around the roots if it is sealed around a pot without adequate drainage.

Do I need a moisture meter for a poinsettia?

A moisture meter is optional. The finger test is sufficient for many people, but a meter can help if you have difficulty judging whether the potting mix is damp. It does not replace checking drainage.

The Bottom Line

Water a poinsettia when the surface of its potting mix feels dry. Check it daily, water thoroughly until excess runs from the drainage holes, let the pot drain, and empty the saucer or decorative foil. The exact interval varies with the pot, room, light, temperature, humidity, and airflow.
