9 Ways to Get Rid of Lint on Clothes, According to Laundry Pros

A lint roller is the fastest fix for loose fibers, but attached fuzz balls are pilling and need a different approach. Here are nine practical ways to remove lint safely and prevent it from returning.

The fastest way to remove loose lint from clothes is a lint roller. Roll it lightly over the garment in one direction, replacing the adhesive sheet when it becomes covered. If the garment has tiny balls or knots attached to the fabric, however, it has pilling, not ordinary lint—and it needs a fabric shaver or pill comb instead.

That distinction matters: lint is loose fiber, hair, dust, or debris sitting on the surface; pills are tangled, broken fibers still attached to the garment. Use the method that matches the problem and always let the garment’s care label take priority.

First, identify whether it is lint or pilling

What you see What it is Best solution
Loose fuzz, hair, dust, or fibers sitting on the surface Lint Lint roller, tape, brush, damp glove, or a suitable dryer cycle
Small balls, knots, or fuzzy clusters firmly attached to the fabric Pilling Fabric shaver or de-pilling comb

A lint roller will lift surface debris but will not properly remove attached pills. Conversely, using a shaver on ordinary loose lint is unnecessary and creates a greater risk of snagging or abrading the fabric.

1. Use a lint roller for the quickest fix

A lint roller is usually the most efficient choice for loose lint, pet hair, dust, and fuzz on everyday clothing. It works particularly well on dark trousers, coats, synthetic workout clothing, and other garments where surface debris is obvious.

  1. Lay the garment flat or hang it securely.
  2. Roll over the fabric in one direction using light, even pressure.
  3. Peel away the used adhesive layer or clean the reusable surface when it becomes full.
  4. Check seams, cuffs, pockets, shoulders, and the area around fasteners.

For a routine wardrobe touch-up, a lint roller for clothes is the simplest tool to keep near a dressing area. A reusable garment brush can be a better long-term option if you frequently remove lint and prefer not to use disposable adhesive sheets.

Test first on loosely woven, embellished, or delicate fabric. Strong adhesive or repeated passes can pull at fragile fibers, beads, sequins, or loose threads.

2. Substitute masking or packing tape

If you do not have a roller, ordinary masking tape or transparent packing tape can remove lint from a small area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Wrap tape around your hand with the sticky side facing outward.
  2. Press or blot the tape onto the lint-covered area.
  3. Lift it away and move to a clean section of tape.

Pressing and lifting is safer than aggressively rubbing. Rubbing can work lint deeper into the weave, create static, or pull at delicate fibers. Tape is especially useful while traveling or when lint is concentrated on a collar, sleeve, or front panel rather than spread across the whole garment.

3. Brush the garment with a lint or clothes brush

A lint brush physically lifts loose fibers and is a useful reusable alternative to adhesive rollers. Brush jackets, trousers, textured fabrics, and upholstery-like clothing with short strokes in one direction.

Brushes can be preferable to adhesive on garments that do not tolerate strong tack, although the correct tool depends on the fabric. A soft garment brush or rubber-sided lint tool is generally more appropriate for clothing than a metal-toothed tool. Do not confuse a brush designed to lift loose debris with a de-pilling comb designed to cut or catch attached fiber balls.

4. Gather surface lint with a slightly damp rubber glove or cloth

A slightly damp rubber glove or washcloth can collect loose fuzz through friction and moisture. This is a low-cost option for a large area with light lint coverage.

  1. Dampen the glove or cloth and wring it out thoroughly.
  2. Wipe in one direction across the garment.
  3. Remove the lint that gathers into clumps.
  4. Allow the garment to dry fully before wearing or storing it.

Do not saturate the clothing. Excess moisture may cause color transfer, water marks, shrinkage, or damage to delicate fibers. Test colorfastness in an inconspicuous place, especially on dark, dyed, wool, or silk garments. This method removes loose surface lint; it will not fix pilling.

5. Run a short low-heat or air-only dryer cycle

For a washable garment that the care label says may be tumble-dried, a short cycle can loosen surface fibers. Place the garment in the dryer for about 10 minutes on low heat or, preferably when suitable, an air-only/no-heat setting.

Tumbling may dislodge loose fibers, while reducing static can help prevent lint from clinging. A dryer sheet may help with static on compatible garments, but it is optional and not appropriate for every fabric, appliance, or household preference.

Do not use this method if the care label prohibits tumble-drying or if the garment is prone to shrinking, melting, stretching, or heat damage. Avoid assuming that “low heat” is safe for every synthetic, wool, rayon, or embellished item.

6. Rewash the garment or affected load

Rewashing is worthwhile when lint covers much of the garment or when a tissue, towel, fleece item, or other lint-producing article contaminated an entire load. Before putting the clothes back in the washer:

  • Remove as much visible lint as possible with a roller, tape, or brush.
  • Check every pocket for tissues, paper, and other debris.
  • Separate lint-producing items from lint-attracting clothing.
  • Avoid overloading the washer.

Run the items through an appropriate cycle with detergent. Where compatible with the fabric, care instructions, washer, and household preferences, fabric softener in the final rinse may reduce static and help release clinging fibers. A dryer sheet can serve a similar static-reduction purpose in the dryer, but neither product is a universal lint remover.

Do not use fabric softener automatically on technical performance clothing, towels, flame-resistant garments, or any item whose manufacturer advises against it. The care label and garment instructions control.

7. Remove pills with a fabric shaver or pill comb

When the garment has small attached balls or knots, use a tool made for pilling. Fabric shavers cut away attached pills and fuzz; de-pilling combs or stones catch and remove them mechanically. They are commonly used on sweaters, fleece, knitwear, and other fabrics that develop surface pills from friction.

A fabric shaver for sweaters can restore a neater surface, but it is not risk-free. Use it this way:

  1. Read the garment’s care instructions and lay the garment completely flat.
  2. Test the tool on an inconspicuous area first.
  3. Keep the fabric taut with one hand.
  4. Move the shaver or comb gently over the surface with light pressure.
  5. Stop if the fabric catches, thins, snags, or changes appearance.

Do not press hard or repeatedly shave the same area. Improvised razors can damage fabric, and a razor should not be the default lint-removal method. Expensive, loosely knitted, heavily embellished, or particularly delicate garments may be safer with a professional cleaner.

8. Prevent lint by sorting laundry and reducing friction

The most reliable long-term solution is to stop lint-producing items from sharing a load with garments that visibly attract it. Wash towels, fleece, flannel, chenille, and heavy sweaters separately from black polyester workout clothing, corduroy, velour, knits, and other smooth or napped fabrics.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These habits also help:

  • Turn garments inside out before washing when the care instructions permit it.
  • Follow the recommended water temperature and cycle.
  • Do not pack the washer or dryer tightly; clothes need room to move.
  • Keep tissues and paper out of pockets.
  • Separate heavily shedding new towels, fleece, and blankets from dark clothing.
  • Reduce unnecessary heat and friction, which can increase fiber shedding and pilling.

A practical rule is simple: wash towels and fleece separately from black polyester clothing and knitwear. Sorting cannot prevent every loose fiber, but it substantially reduces fiber transfer and the static that makes lint cling.

9. Clean the washer, dryer, and vent

If lint keeps returning or clothes are taking longer than usual to dry, the appliance may be part of the problem.

Dryer lint screen

Clean the lint screen after every load. Periodically remove residue that remains stuck to the screen, since buildup can restrict airflow. A screen that looks clean may still have a film from detergent, softener, or dryer-sheet residue; follow the appliance manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.

Washing-machine lint filter

Some washing machines have a lint filter or trap that collects fuzz, hair, and debris. Its location and cleaning procedure vary substantially by model, so use the owner’s manual rather than guessing or removing panels. Not every washer has a user-cleanable filter.

Dryer vent

Persistent lint, unusually long drying times, or poor airflow justify checking the dryer vent. A dryer vent cleaning brush can help with accessible maintenance when it is appropriate for the appliance and vent configuration.

Before cleaning or inspecting the vent, turn off and unplug the dryer, or follow the manufacturer’s safe isolation procedure. Do not force a brush through a blocked or damaged duct. If the vent is long, difficult to access, crushed, disconnected, or heavily obstructed, use a qualified appliance or vent-cleaning professional. Vent maintenance is an appliance-safety and airflow issue; it does not directly remove lint from clothing.

Which lint-removal method should you choose?

Situation Start with Why
A few visible fibers before leaving home Lint roller or tape Fast and targeted
Pet hair across a coat or trousers Lint roller or garment brush Designed for loose surface debris
Lint on a delicate or loosely woven item Soft brush, careful blotting, or a professional cleaner Reduces adhesive and abrasion risk
Large area with light fuzz and no tools available Slightly damp rubber glove or cloth Gathers loose fibers inexpensively
Static-related lint on a dryer-safe washable item Short air-only or low-heat cycle Tumbling can loosen fibers and reduce cling
Lint throughout a contaminated load Remove visible debris, then rewash Addresses widespread transfer
Small balls or knots attached to a sweater Fabric shaver or pill comb Designed for pilling, not loose lint
Repeated lint or slow drying Clean filters and investigate the vent Addresses the laundry system, not just the garment

What not to do

  • Do not call every fuzzy surface lint. Pilling is attached fiber damage or entanglement and requires a different tool.
  • Do not use a razor aggressively. It can cut fabric or create thin spots.
  • Do not saturate clothing with water just to gather fuzz.
  • Do not tumble-dry items against their care labels.
  • Do not overload the washer or dryer. Crowding increases friction and reduces effective movement and airflow.
  • Do not clean or dismantle appliance parts blindly. Use the owner’s manual and isolate power before vent work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the fastest way to get lint off clothes?

Use a lint roller and roll lightly in one direction. If you do not have one, wrap masking or transparent tape around your hand with the sticky side out and press, then lift, the lint-covered areas.

Why does my black clothing attract so much lint?

Dark clothing makes loose fibers easier to see, while static, friction, and contact with lint-producing fabrics can make fibers cling. Wash black synthetics and knitwear separately from towels, fleece, flannel, and chenille, and avoid overloading the machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I remove lint from clothes in the dryer?

Only if the care label permits tumble-drying. Try about 10 minutes on low heat or an air-only setting. Heat can shrink, melt, stretch, or damage some fabrics, so air-only is preferable when suitable.

How do I remove pills from a sweater?

Lay the sweater flat, keep it taut, and use a fabric shaver or de-pilling comb with light pressure after testing an inconspicuous area. Stop if the tool snags or thins the fabric. Delicate or expensive garments may be better handled professionally.

How often should I clean the dryer lint screen?

Clean the lint screen after every load. If lint buildup, residue, poor airflow, or longer drying times continue, follow the appliance manual for deeper screen cleaning and inspect the vent safely.

The Bottom Line

For loose lint, start with a lint roller; use tape, a garment brush, or a barely damp glove when a roller is unavailable. Rewash heavily contaminated loads and prevent repeat problems by sorting lint-producing fabrics, reducing friction, and cleaning appliance filters. For attached balls or knots, switch to a fabric shaver or pill comb and use it cautiously—because pilling is not ordinary lint.
