Clean, dry pillows can be reused; damp, moldy, infested, or heavily soiled pillows should not be enclosed in a new household or pet project. The filling matters too: polyester fiberfill is easy to redistribute, while foam, latex, down, feathers, and buckwheat hulls need different treatment.
Before you choose a project, sort the pillow by condition and filling:

- Clean and completely dry: reuse the cover or filling, donate it, or investigate textile recovery.
- Flattened but hygienic: use the filling as supplemental stuffing rather than expecting it to provide firm, even support.
- Memory foam, latex, or buckwheat: handle it as a specific material—not as ordinary loose fiberfill.
- Wet, moldy, pest-contaminated, or heavily soiled: do not enclose it in a household or pet project. Ask your local solid-waste or textile-recovery provider about disposal.
Reuse is a sensible first option when it is safe and practical. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s waste hierarchy places source reduction and reuse above recycling and disposal. But an old pillow is not automatically suitable for a new use: moisture can remain inside after washing, and that trapped moisture may lead to mildew. Follow the care label and dry washable pillows thoroughly before cutting them open or covering them again.

The easiest transformation is also the most versatile: put a clean old pillow inside a new, washable cover. For a larger floor cushion, combine two or more pillows in one durable cover.

- Premium Polyester Fiber Fill: Indulge your creative tendencies with Fairfield’s Poly-Fil Crafter’s Choice! The special blend of 100% polyester fibers has a dry, coarse texture, making it a great stuffing for small spaces.
- Polyester Packing: This polyester fiberfill has not been treated with silicone, so the fiber has a coarse texture that packs firmly, allowing you to stuff it into small spaces with a stuffing tool without the fiber popping out of place.
- Stuffing for Stuffed Animals: This Poly-fil fiberfill is great for stuffing hand-made dolls, toys, and animals, as it stays in place and helps to maintain the fluff and structural integrity of your creations.
- Safe to Use: The Poly-Fil Crafter’s Choice stuffing is hypoallergenic, making it safe for you to use in your creative ventures. The polyester fiberfill is made in the USA.
- Machine-washable: Machine wash gently with warm water. Air dry or tumble dry on the air or low heat setting. Fiber may shift during laundering; gently massage the project with your fingertips to move the fiber stuffing back into place.
Use an existing pillowcase, an old sheet, curtain remnant, denim, or other sturdy fabric. A removable cover with a zipper, envelope opening, or securely sewn closure makes future cleaning easier. If you are making a floor pillow, choose fabric that can tolerate contact with the floor and expect the reused filling to flatten unevenly over time.
You will need: fabric or a pillowcase, thread, a needle or sewing machine, and fabric scissors. Shop your home for these materials before buying anything new.
2. Sew a washable pet bed
Clean polyester filling, down, or feathers can be redistributed into a larger cover for a small dog or cat bed. The cover should be tightly closed so the animal cannot reach loose fill, and it should be removable or washable whenever possible.
If the old pillow does not provide enough loft, you can supplement it with polyester fiberfill stuffing. Buy additional fill only for the part of the project that needs it; the goal is to extend the useful material already in the pillow, not replace it unnecessarily.
Use a tightly woven, washable outer fabric and inspect the seams regularly. A homemade pet bed is not chew-proof, so remove it if the animal tears the cover or begins pulling out filling.
Clean bedding may also be useful to an animal shelter or rescue organization, but acceptance policies vary. Call first and ask what the organization currently needs. Do not donate a pillow that is damp, moldy, pest-contaminated, or heavily soiled.
3. Turn the filling into a draft stopper
A long fabric tube filled with clean, dry pillow fiber can block the gap beneath a drafty door or along a window. This is a straightforward way to reuse filling even when the original pillow casing is worn out.
- Cut or sew a long tube from tightly woven fabric.
- Close one end securely.
- Fill the tube gradually, distributing the fiber as you go.
- Sew the remaining end closed with a strong seam.
Keep the draft stopper dry and check it periodically for torn seams. It is a draft-blocking cushion, not a tested guarantee of energy savings. Never place a fabric-filled stopper against a heater, stove, radiator, heating element, or other hot surface.

4. Make a reading pillow
A reading pillow—sometimes made with side or back panels and a front pocket—can hold a book, tablet, toy, or snack. You can reuse the old pillow as the insert if its dimensions fit the new cover, or transfer its clean filling into the shape you want.
A basic version needs fabric, thread, scissors, and a pillow form or reused insert. Add a large pocket to the front before closing the cover. Utah State University Extension documents a reading-pillow format using a pillow form and pocket, so readers who want a measured pattern can use an extension sewing project as their starting point.
Use the result as a comfortable lounging pillow, not as a medical, orthopedic, or therapeutic back-support device. The amount and condition of reused filling will affect how evenly it supports you.

A flattened but hygienic pillow can become a soft kneeling pad for gardening, cleaning low surfaces, painting, or other household tasks. Put it inside a narrow, durable, washable cover so it is easier to carry and store.
Choose a cover with strong seams and inspect it before every use. This project provides cushioning only. It does not protect against sharp objects, chemicals, extreme cold, wet ground, or hard impacts, and it is not a substitute for task-specific protective equipment.
Keep the pad dry. If it becomes damp or develops an odor, remove the filling from service rather than sealing the problem inside a new cover.

6. Stuff a soft sculpture, toy, or seasonal decoration
Old fiberfill works well for small fabric forms such as decorative pumpkins, ornaments, soft sculptures, fabric wreath components, or other seasonal decorations. Divide the clean filling among several shapes instead of trying to preserve the original pillow.

For pet toys, use only durable construction appropriate for the individual animal and do not describe the finished toy as chew-proof. Remove it at the first sign of damage.
This is a particularly useful destination for a pillow whose outer casing is unattractive but whose filling is still dry, odor-free, and clean.
7. Sew a second decorative pillow
Give old filling a different shape by making a new decorative pillow cover from a tablecloth, curtain remnant, denim, old sheet, or fabric scrap. A square or rectangular cover can turn an ordinary bed pillow into a throw pillow for a sofa, bench, or reading corner.
Measure the insert before cutting fabric. Sew the cover slightly smaller than the finished insert if you want a fuller appearance, but do not overstuff it to the point that the seams strain. An envelope-style opening avoids a zipper and still allows the cover to be removed for washing.
If the reused filling is sparse or badly compressed, add only enough polyester fiberfill stuffing to restore the desired fullness. Mixing new polyester fiberfill with old, clean polyester fill is more practical than trying to make a flattened pillow feel new on its own.

8. Reuse the casing as a soft storage pouch
Sometimes the most useful part of an old pillow is the casing or pillowcase rather than its filling. If the fabric is clean and intact, adapt it into a soft storage pouch or protective cover for shoes, delicate clothing, craft supplies, spare linens, or other bulky soft goods.
A pillowcase-style opening already gives you a simple bag shape. Sew the opening narrower, add a drawstring or ties, or divide the interior into compartments for small items. This can also be a practical way to organize seasonal textiles without buying another container.
Do not use a thin pillowcase as protection for fragile valuables, and never put damp items inside. Fabric storage bags need ventilation and dry contents; they are not a solution for wet clothing, leaky equipment, or moisture-prone storage areas.

9. Donate usable bedding or find textile recovery
If the pillow is still clean, dry, odor-free, and usable, donation may be better than taking it apart. Contact a local shelter, animal rescue, thrift organization, or community group and ask whether it accepts pillows and what condition it requires. Do not assume that every organization accepts used bedding.
For a pillow that is unsuitable for donation but not contaminated, look for a local textile-recovery provider or textile drop-off program. The EPA identifies textiles and linens as materials that may be collected through some local drop-off or transfer-station programs, but rules differ by location.
Match the project to the pillow filling
| Filling or construction | Best reuse approach | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Polyester fiberfill | Cushions, pet beds, draft stoppers, decorative pillows, toys, and stuffed décor | Use only fill that is clean, dry, and free of persistent odor or visible contamination. |
| Down and feathers | A new insert, cushion, or decorative project with a secure inner liner | Down and feathers can clump. Material-specific cleaning and complete drying are essential, and a tightly closed liner helps prevent feathers from escaping. |
| Memory foam | Appropriate padding projects using clean, intact foam | Do not treat slab foam as loose washable stuffing. Washer agitation can damage it; surface cleaning is often the appropriate approach, depending on the care instructions. |
| Latex | Padding or craft use only when the intact material suits the project | Follow the manufacturer’s care instructions and keep it out of projects where its condition or odor cannot be checked. |
| Buckwheat hulls | Projects designed specifically for hull filling | Remove the hulls before cleaning the cover. Keep them separate from fiberfill and away from projects likely to get wet. |
When an old pillow should not be repurposed
Do not put a pillow with mold, persistent dampness, pest contamination, severe soiling, or a strong unresolved odor into a pet bed, toy, cushion, or other enclosed project. A new cover can hide contamination; it cannot make contaminated material clean.
For a questionable pillow, contact your municipal solid-waste agency or a textile-recovery provider and describe the material and condition. Ask whether it belongs in a designated textile drop-off, transfer station, or another local waste stream. Because collection rules vary, avoid assuming that a pillow is recyclable—or that it must go in ordinary trash—without checking first.

A quick reuse checklist
- Read the care label and identify the filling.
- Reject anything moldy, damp, pest-contaminated, severely soiled, or persistently smelly.
- Wash only in the way the material and care label permit.
- Dry washable filling completely before enclosing it again.
- Use removable, washable covers for cushions and pet beds.
- Secure all seams and keep loose filling away from children and pets.
- Keep fabric-filled items away from heaters and other hot surfaces.
- Call shelters and textile programs before donating or dropping anything off.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Reuse only clean, dry, odor-free filling without visible contamination. Memory foam, latex, down, feathers, and buckwheat hulls also require material-specific handling rather than being treated like ordinary polyester fiberfill.
Can I reuse the filling from any old pillow?
Some shelters and rescues may need clean bedding, but acceptance rules vary. Call the organization first and ask what it currently accepts and what condition the items must be in.
Will an animal shelter accept old pillows?
Do not place them in curbside recycling unless your local provider explicitly accepts them. Ask your local solid-waste agency or textile-recovery program about available drop-off and disposal options.
Can old pillows go in the recycling bin?
The Bottom Line
An old pillow does not have to become waste immediately. If it is clean and dry, reuse its filling in a cushion, pet bed, draft stopper, reading pillow, kneeling pad, toy, or decorative project—or reuse its casing as a storage pouch. If it is damp, moldy, infested, or heavily soiled, skip the DIY project and verify the correct local recovery or disposal route.
