9 Best Smart Plugs of 2024: The Ones Worth Knowing

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Best overall: TP-Link Tapo P125M. It combines Matter compatibility, a compact design, physical control, scheduling and support for Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings. Choose the Kasa EP25P4 or KP125M if energy monitoring matters, Eve Energy for a premium Apple Home/Thread setup, and the Tapo TP25 for outdoor use.

The exact model number matters more than the brand name. “Kasa,” “Tapo” and “Meross” each cover several plugs with different platform support, ratings and features. Matter improves flexibility, but it still requires a compatible controller and does not expose every manufacturer feature in every ecosystem.

What a smart plug actually does

A smart plug sits between a wall outlet and an appliance. Its relay switches power, allowing app control, voice commands, schedules, countdown timers and away-mode automation. Some models measure electrical consumption, and all useful models retain a physical on/off button.

A plug does not make every appliance smart. It cannot press an electronic standby button or change a device’s settings. The connected appliance normally must resume operation automatically when power returns.

The nine best smart plugs of 2024

1. TP-Link Tapo P125M — best overall Matter plug

The P125M was the most balanced choice for a new buyer. It is Matter-certified, supports Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings, and provides remote switching, schedules, auto-off, away mode and a physical button. Its compact body is designed to leave the adjacent receptacle usable. TP-Link lists a 15 A/1,800 W maximum at 120 V and a 1/6-horsepower motor rating: official specifications.

  • Best for: households that may change ecosystems.
  • Limitations: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; no energy monitoring is listed; a Matter controller is required.

2. TP-Link Kasa EP25P4 — best Apple Home and energy-monitoring option

The EP25P4 combines Apple HomeKit, Alexa, Google Home and SmartThings support with real-time and historical energy monitoring, scheduling and timers. TP-Link lists a 15 A/1,800 W load, UL certification and a two-year limited warranty: EP25P4 details.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: iPhone households wanting consumption data without a separate monitor.
  • Limitations: verify the exact regional version before calling it Matter-certified; energy data may not appear identically in every platform; 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi is required.

3. TP-Link Kasa KP125M — best Matter plug with energy monitoring

The KP125M adds energy monitoring to Matter’s cross-platform flexibility. It supports Apple Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant and other integrations, along with schedules, away mode and remote control: official product page.

  • NO 3RD PARTY APPS OR HUBS REQUIRED: Set up and manage connected devices directly in the Alexa app; no need for additional smart hubs or 3rd party apps
  • Best for: buyers who want both Matter and power data.
  • Limitations: confirm pack size, suffix and regional feature support; platforms may expose different energy controls.

4. TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug Mini — best inexpensive mainstream option

Kasa Mini models were widely recommended in 2024 for compact hardware, physical switching, voice-assistant support and straightforward app setup. Tom’s Guide’s coverage describes Kasa’s Alexa, Google Assistant, HomeKit and away-mode capabilities: review coverage.

  • Best for: lamps, fans and simple timers when Matter and energy data are unnecessary.
  • Limitations: HS103, EP25 and other Kasa models are not interchangeable; Apple Home and Matter support depend on the exact number.

5. Meross Matter Smart Plug Mini — best low-cost Matter alternative

Meross offered inexpensive Matter and Apple Home alternatives in 2024. The broader range also included Alexa, Google Assistant and SmartThings support: 2024 roundup and Digital Trends comparison.

  • Best for: shoppers seeking a lower-cost Matter or Apple Home plug.
  • Limitations: check whether the listing is Matter, HomeKit-only or an older Wi-Fi model, and whether energy monitoring is included.

6. Eve Energy — best premium Apple Home and Thread plug

Eve Energy targets Apple-focused homes that value local control, Thread connectivity, privacy-oriented operation and energy monitoring. Popular Science and TechRadar included it among premium smart-plug choices: Popular Science and TechRadar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Best for: Apple Home users prepared to provide a compatible hub or Thread border router.
  • Limitations: usually costs more than Wi-Fi plugs and is unnecessary for a basic Alexa timer; verify the generation and regional Matter support.

7. Meross Outdoor Smart Plug — best budget outdoor alternative

Meross’s outdoor model was noted for two independently controlled outlets and broad voice-platform support, including Apple Home, Alexa and SmartThings: 2024 coverage.

  • Limitations: verify the exact weather-resistance rating; protect the connection from direct water and confirm outdoor Wi-Fi coverage.

8. TP-Link Tapo TP25 — best Matter outdoor plug

The TP25 has an IP65 rating, two independently controlled outlets, Matter support, a 15 A/1,800 W maximum and a listed operating range of −4°F to 122°F: TP-Link specifications. Its stated 300-foot range is an open-area manufacturer claim, not an indoor guarantee.

  • Best for: outdoor lighting and equipment when Matter and separate outlet schedules matter.
  • Limitations: 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only; IP65 does not mean submersible or safe with an uncovered connection.

9. Amazon Smart Plug — best for Alexa-only homes

Amazon’s plug was the simplest choice for an Alexa household because it pairs with the Alexa account and supports routines and voice control, as described by Tom’s Guide: review.

  • Best for: users who want minimal setup inside Alexa.
  • Limitations: it is a poor fit for Google Home or Apple Home, and availability and regional support should be verified rather than assumed from a 2024 recommendation.

Matter, Wi-Fi and hub requirements

Matter is an application standard, not a radio. A Matter plug can use Wi-Fi or Thread. A Wi-Fi Matter plug still depends on the home network; a Thread model needs a Thread border router. In either case, you need a Matter-compatible app and controller, such as a supported smart speaker, Apple TV, HomePod, Google Nest device or SmartThings hub. TP-Link explains the requirements at its Matter overview and in the P125M guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matter can let one device be shared across ecosystems, but advanced functions such as energy history may not transfer. Native HomeKit can therefore be simpler for an Apple-only home. Matter is a flexibility advantage, not a guarantee of better hardware or identical features.

Check Wi-Fi before buying

Many affordable plugs use 2.4 GHz only, including the Tapo P125M and Kasa EP25P4. Setup can fail when a phone is on a 5 GHz-only network, a combined SSID confuses onboarding, the router is WPA3-only, or guest-network isolation blocks local discovery.

  • Use a normal 2.4 GHz home network during setup.
  • Temporarily disable VPN or cellular fallback.
  • Keep the plug near the router until commissioning completes.
  • Confirm the controller and phone are on the same local network for Matter setup.

Energy monitoring: useful, not magic savings

Monitoring can reveal standby draw, compare appliances, estimate usage over time and show whether a device is running. It does not guarantee lower bills. Accuracy, cost calculations and historical views vary by model and platform; the EP25P4 and KP125M explicitly advertise real-time and historical data: EP25P4 and KP125M.

Electrical and appliance safety

A plug can usually switch a lamp, charger or simple fan, but appliance behavior and load type matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Resistive loads: lamps and some heating elements draw relatively predictable current.
  • Motor loads: fans, pumps and compressors can have startup surges; use the model’s motor rating.
  • Electronic loads: televisions, computers and appliances with standby buttons may remain off after power is restored.

Never treat the rating as permission to automate a dangerous device. Avoid unattended space heaters, irons, hair tools, high-wattage cooking equipment and medical equipment. Check restoration behavior—on, off or previous state—especially for pumps, aquariums and refrigerators. Do not plug a power strip into a smart plug unless both manufacturers permit the load and the combined current stays within the rating.

Outdoor installation

Use only a plug explicitly rated for outdoor service. Install it with protected connections and GFCI protection where required. “Weather-resistant” does not mean submersible, safe under direct water flow or suitable with an uncovered receptacle. The TP25’s IP65 rating and −4°F to 122°F operating range are product-specific, not universal outdoor standards.

When a smart power strip is better

The Kasa HS300 is a related category rather than a single plug. It offers individually controlled outlets, USB ports and built-in surge protection, making it more practical for a desk or entertainment center. Tom’s Guide describes it as effectively combining several controlled outlets: HS300 coverage. Surge protection must be explicitly verified; ordinary smart plugs do not provide it by default.

Setup and troubleshooting

Standard Wi-Fi setup

  1. Plug the device into a wall outlet and install its manufacturer app.
  2. Sign in or create the required account.
  3. Add the plug and connect the phone and plug to the required 2.4 GHz network.
  4. Name it clearly, such as “Living Room Lamp.”
  5. Test the physical button, app control and voice-assistant link.
  6. Create one schedule or routine, then test it while away from home Wi-Fi.

Matter setup

  1. Confirm the exact plug, firmware, app and controller support Matter.
  2. Open Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, SmartThings or another compatible app.
  3. Scan the Matter QR code or enter the setup code.
  4. Assign the device to a room and test on/off control.
  5. Use Matter multi-admin sharing if you want the same plug in another ecosystem.
  6. Check whether energy monitoring and other advanced features are exposed there.

If commissioning fails

  • Move the phone temporarily to 2.4 GHz and disable VPN.
  • Check WPA3-only settings, guest isolation and local-network permissions.
  • Update the app and firmware, then factory-reset only the affected plug.
  • Re-add it to the intended ecosystem using the exact model’s instructions.

After a router or password change, record device names and routines, reconnect the plug, re-add it if necessary and test every schedule. Cloud-dependent models may not operate when the internet is down; local control depends on the model, app and home controller.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Matter smart plugs need a hub?

They may not need a proprietary brand hub, but they still require a compatible Matter controller and app. Thread models additionally need a Thread border router.

Will a smart plug turn on any appliance?

Only if the appliance resumes operation when power is supplied. Devices requiring an electronic standby-button press may remain off.

Can I use an indoor smart plug outside?

No. Use a model with an explicit outdoor rating, protected connections and appropriate GFCI installation.

Do smart plugs work without internet?

Some retain local control through the home network or Matter controller; cloud-dependent models may not. Do not assume offline operation.
