Oakleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea quercifolia) bring oak-shaped leaves, cone-shaped clusters of white flowers that age pink and tan, and peeling bark on mature branches. The best cultivar depends on the space you have and the effect you want: compact choices include Pee Wee and Gatsby Glow Ball, while Alice and Snow Queen grow larger. North Carolina State Extension lists many more than nine cultivars, so these nine are a selection—not a complete list.

Compare these nine oakleaf hydrangeas

Cultivar Size or defining trait What to consider
Alice 5–8 feet tall and wide Large, arching flower panicles; blooms fade from white to pink. Fall foliage may turn purple, bronze, and red.
Pee Wee About 3–4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide Compact, with smaller leaves than other oakleaf hydrangeas.
Little Honey Size not stated by NC State Extension Golden foliage is its noted distinguishing feature.
Snowflake (‘Brido’) Panicles described as 12–15 inches Double white flowers; the heavy panicles may cause stems to flop.
Snow Queen (‘Flemygea’) About 6 feet tall and 8 feet wide White flowers age pink; strong stems tend to keep panicles upright, and flowers can be cut.
Gatsby Glow Ball (‘NCHQ1’) About 3–4 feet tall and wide A compact option where a smaller shrub is needed.
Munchkin Not stated by NC State Extension Listed as semi-dwarf; no further cultivar-specific traits are given in the profile.
Ruby Slippers Not stated by NC State Extension Named in the cultivar list; specific traits are not detailed there.
Ice Crystal Not stated by NC State Extension Named in the cultivar list; specific traits are not detailed there.

Sizes and descriptions in the table are from the North Carolina State Extension plant profile. It gives no comparable size or further trait information for some listed cultivars; check a cultivar-level reference or local extension advice before buying if those details determine fit.

Which cultivar fits your garden?

For a smaller planting area

Pee Wee and Gatsby Glow Ball are the clearest compact choices in the profile. Pee Wee has a stated mature size of roughly 3–4 feet tall and 2–3 feet wide; Gatsby Glow Ball is about 3–4 feet in both height and spread. Munchkin is described as semi-dwarf, but a mature size is not supplied, so confirm its dimensions with the nursery before planting.

For flowers that hold their shape

Snow Queen is a good candidate when upright panicles matter: its strong stems tend to keep the flowers upright, and the blooms are suitable for cutting. Snowflake offers double white flowers in large, showy panicles, but their weight can make stems flop. Allow room for that looser display rather than expecting every stem to stay vertical.

Planting conditions and care

North Carolina State Extension lists oakleaf hydrangea for USDA hardiness zones 5a–9b and recommends full sun to partial shade with moist, well-drained soil. This is species-level guidance; local climate, exposure, drainage, and cultivar-specific advice can affect a particular planting. The shrub can serve as a specimen or accent, informal hedge, or mass planting where there is enough room.

Deciduous plants bought dormant during the winter are expected to leaf out in the spring under the same conditions.

Prune after flowering

Oakleaf hydrangea flowers on old wood, meaning its blooms develop from buds formed on growth from the previous season. If pruning is needed, do it immediately after flowering; pruning later can remove next season’s flower buds. Harsh winter conditions can also damage or kill buds, so a healthy shrub may flower less after a severe winter.

Before you buy

  • Match the stated mature height and spread to the planting space, not just the plant’s size in its nursery pot.
  • Ask for cultivar-specific dimensions when the Extension profile does not provide them, especially for Munchkin, Ruby Slippers, and Ice Crystal.
  • Consider whether you prefer upright panicles, as noted for Snow Queen, or the heavier flowers and possible flopping of Snowflake.
  • Check local extension guidance for your site and climate, particularly where winter cold or drainage may affect performance.
