There is no verified, apples-to-apples ranking of the world’s eight most expensive flowers. The familiar list combines an alleged orchid auction, reported rose-breeding costs, rare plants without verified current prices, and flowers valued for their harvest or fleeting bloom. Here are the eight often named, with what the available figures actually describe.
Why these flowers are called expensive
“Expensive” can refer to very different things: a reported sale of one plant, the investment to breed a variety, an estimated value, or the worth of a useful harvest. Those measures cannot be ranked on one price scale. The eight names below come from a 2024 NDTV selection, not an independently verified global top-eight ranking (NDTV’s list).

| Flower | What the value claim represents | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Kadupul | Reputation for being “priceless” | Ephemeral bloom; no comparable sale price stated by NDTV (NDTV) |
| Juliet Rose | Reported breeding investment | HowStuffWorks reports £3 million and 15 years to develop it—not a per-flower price (HowStuffWorks, 2025) |
| Shenzhen Nongke orchid | Reported auction result | Secondary sources repeat large figures, but no primary transaction record was found in the cited coverage (Interflora Australia; HowStuffWorks, 2025) |
| Gold of Kinabalu orchid | Variable price claims | No verified current legal retail price or documented sale is established in the cited coverage (HowStuffWorks, 2025) |
| Saffron crocus | Value of harvested spice | The stigmas are harvested to produce saffron; that does not establish a comparable cut-flower price (NDTV) |
| Gloriosa | Included in the list | No consistent price comparison is established in the cited list (NDTV) |
| Lily of the valley | Included in the list | No consistent price comparison is established in the cited list (NDTV) |
| Lisianthus | Included in the list | No consistent price comparison is established in the cited list (NDTV) |
The eight flowers, and what their reputations rest on
1. Kadupul: a flower prized for its brief appearance
NDTV describes Kadupul as opening at night and withering before dawn. Its “priceless” reputation is best understood as a description of its fleeting bloom and lack of an ordinary market price—not evidence of a sale worth more than any other flower (NDTV).

2. Juliet Rose: a reported £3 million to develop
HowStuffWorks reports that David Austin spent 15 years and £3 million developing the Juliet Rose. That figure describes reported breeding investment, not the amount paid for a single rose or proof that it is the world’s most expensive rose to buy (HowStuffWorks, 2025). A 2019 gardening newsletter also repeats the £3 million figure (Gold Coast Organic Growers newsletter).

3. Shenzhen Nongke orchid: a striking but unverified auction story
HowStuffWorks reports an auction result of about US$200,000, while Interflora Australia gives an equivalent of AUD 290,000 for a reported 2005 auction. A 2019 newsletter repeats £160,000. These are secondary-source accounts, not corroborating transaction records; the available coverage does not establish an auction catalogue or buyer record. Treat the figures as reported claims, not a verified current market price (HowStuffWorks, 2025; Interflora Australia; Gold Coast Organic Growers newsletter, 2019).
4. Gold of Kinabalu orchid: rarity without a settled retail figure
The orchid appears in editorial and trade coverage as a rare flower, but reported price claims vary. The cited material does not verify a current legal retail price, document a specific sale, or establish that plants are available to buy. A headline figure therefore should not be treated as a reliable shopping price (HowStuffWorks, 2025).

5. Saffron crocus: the valuable part is the harvest
Saffron comes from the crocus’s stigmas, which must be harvested from the flowers. NDTV points to the labor involved in that harvest. The economic value is tied to producing the spice, rather than necessarily to buying an individual bloom as a cut flower (NDTV).

6. Gloriosa: on the list, but not supported by a comparable price
Gloriosa is one of NDTV’s eight selections, but the cited list does not provide a consistent, verifiable price basis for comparing it with an auction claim or breeding budget (NDTV).

Lily of the valley also appears in the selection. The cited material does not establish a comparable price, specific transaction, or current retail value for the flower (NDTV).
8. Lisianthus: included without a substantiated price comparison
Lisianthus completes the eight, but the cited coverage does not support a consistent claim about how much it costs relative to the other entries. Its inclusion in a “most expensive” list should not be mistaken for a documented global ranking (NDTV).

How to interpret “most expensive” claims
- Check what the number measures. Development cost, an alleged auction result, an estimate, and the value of a harvested product are different categories.
- Look for transaction evidence. A reported sale is stronger when supported by a contemporaneous catalogue or buyer record; secondary accounts alone do not verify the Shenzhen Nongke claim.
- Separate price from availability. A reported historic figure does not establish that a flower or plant can be lawfully bought today, or what it would cost in a particular region.
- Read “priceless” figuratively unless a price is documented. For Kadupul, the cited explanation concerns its short-lived bloom, not a measurable transaction.
Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
