It is a series of layers that make entry harder, remove hiding places, create noise and alerts, and improve the chance of intervention or useful evidence. A visible camera may make an opportunist reconsider, but it cannot reinforce a weak door. A monitored alarm may send an event to a monitoring center, but it does not guarantee police attendance.
For most U.S. homes, start with properly secured doors and windows, then add motion lighting, entry sensors, cameras, and—where the risk or budget justifies it—professional monitoring. The eight devices below help cover those layers without turning security into a collection of disconnected gadgets.

| Garage or driveway sensor | Cover an overlooked access route | Garage, driveway, or long approach | Range and compatibility issues | Medium |
Fix the building before adding smart devices
Security hardware works best when it is attached to a sound structure. Before buying another camera, inspect every exterior door, sliding door, basement window, and ground-floor window. Repair loose frames, replace weak locks, and reinforce strike plates with screws long enough to anchor into structural material.
Seattle Police recommends exterior deadbolts with at least a one-inch throw, reinforced strike plates, and structural fastening. Also secure sliding doors against lifting, lock vulnerable windows, trim landscaping that conceals entries, and keep ladders and tools secured.

1. Video doorbell
A video doorbell covers the most-used entrance and lets occupants see and speak to visitors without opening the door. It can provide live view, motion alerts, a record of deliveries, and evidence if someone approaches the house.
Washington, D.C., police guidance recommends a peephole or video doorbell so residents can identify visitors before opening the door.
What to look for
- Head-to-toe or package-level field of view.
- Useful night performance and good handling of backlighting.
- Person detection and adjustable motion zones.
- Two-way talk with a clear microphone and speaker.
- Local recording, or a clearly explained cloud-storage subscription.
- Two-factor authentication, strong account security, and privacy controls.
- A chime option if occupants do not carry phones.
- Transformer compatibility if the device is hardwired.
Battery models are easier for renters but may sleep between events, need frequent charging, or be physically removed. Hardwired models are more consistent but still depend on the home’s wiring and internet connection. Position the camera to avoid unnecessary views into neighbors’ homes or private areas.
As a dated commercial example, Ring’s official Battery Doorbell 2K page displayed a U.S. sale price of $69.99, reduced from $99.99, when checked August 18, 2026. The page listed 2K video, head-to-toe video, motion detection, live view, two-way talk, and rechargeable-battery operation. Professional installation was listed as starting at approximately $129.99 per device, subject to location and device. Prices and subscription requirements can change, so verify them on the official product page.
2. Outdoor security camera
Outdoor cameras cover what a doorbell cannot: rear doors, side yards, gates, driveways, detached garages, and concealed approaches. Police guidance identifies weather-resistant cameras with nighttime recording as potentially useful for evidence.
Choose weather resistance appropriate to the mounting location, infrared or color night vision, wide dynamic range for headlights, and person, vehicle, and animal filtering. Field of view and placement often matter more than a “4K” label. A camera aimed at a distant driveway may identify a vehicle but not a face; one mounted too high may record a hat or hood instead of useful facial detail.

- One Unified Security System, Powered by 1st-Gen aosuBase: 32GB of local storage comes ready to use, holding about 120 days of loop recording. No subscription required. Connect up to 4 cameras to one base with a stable wireless connection and centralized local storage. Recordings saved to aosuBase are event-based, triggered by detected activity.
- Multi-Cam Live View for All-at-Once Monitoring: Watch up to four live camera feeds simultaneously in the aosu app and monitor multiple areas on one screen without opening each camera individually. Live View is available through the aosu app only; the base does not support HDMI or TV output.
- 360° Coverage with Pan, Tilt, and Smart Auto Tracking: Pan and tilt to see all around your property. When activity is detected, the camera automatically follows people and other movement to keep the action in view while recording, giving you a more complete view of what happens around your home.
- 2K (3MP) Clarity with Full-Color Night Vision: Capture clear details in 2K and zoom in up to 6x for a closer look. Built-in spotlights enable full-color night vision, helping you see important color details like clothing and vehicles after dark. For more discreet monitoring, switch to infrared mode for black-and-white night vision without visible lighting.
- Quick Setup with a Pre-Paired System: Connect aosuBase to your router's LAN port with the included Ethernet cable. Cameras connect wirelessly to aosuBase instead of your home Wi-Fi. The system comes pre-paired, so simply power on the cameras and complete setup in the app without pairing each camera one by one. The cameras are designed to work with the included aosuBase, and add-on cameras connect through the base as well.
Continuous recording is worth considering at a critical approach because motion-only systems can miss slow movement or activity outside the detection zone. Local or hybrid recording can preserve evidence during an internet outage, while cloud recording is useful if the camera or recorder is stolen. Enable two-factor authentication and mount cameras high enough to discourage tampering without making the image unusably distant.
Review privacy, building, homeowner-association, and local rules before recording shared hallways, sidewalks, neighbors’ property, or other private areas. Guidance from West Yorkshire Police and Fairfax County Police also emphasizes using cameras as part of broader security rather than as a substitute for locks and habits.
3. Professionally monitored alarm system
An alarm adds two valuable layers: a loud local warning and, with a monitoring plan, transmission of alarm events to a monitoring center. It is most useful when residents may not see a phone alert quickly, when the property is frequently empty, or when there are several entry points to supervise.
Compare monitoring fees, contract terms, cellular backup, battery backup, entry and exit delays, permit requirements, false-alarm policies, and whether the system remains usable without a subscription. Confirm whether the system can be self-monitored and whether smoke, water, garage, and environmental sensors are supported.

Never assume an alarm automatically means police will arrive. Response depends on the monitoring provider, alarm verification, local policy, permit status, the type of event, and available resources. Frequent false alarms can cause residents and neighbors to ignore the system and may lead to local penalties. Configure pet-friendly motion sensors carefully and notify the provider before testing.
4. Door and window contact sensors
Contact sensors are small, low-power devices that report when a protected opening separates. They provide earlier warning than a camera alone and are often a better next purchase than another indoor camera.
Prioritize the front, back, and side doors; the door between an attached garage and the house; basement windows; sliding doors; concealed ground-floor windows; and windows that occupants regularly leave open. Select sensors with reliable wireless range, tamper notifications, low-battery alerts, and recessed or surface-mount options suited to the frame.

Install them on openings that the household actually uses and configure the system to reflect normal routines. A sensor is not useful if residents routinely bypass it or leave the opening unsecured. Keep at least one appropriate fire-escape route available, as emphasized in Seattle Police burglary-prevention guidance.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Smart lock or high-security deadbolt
The primary security feature is not the app. It is a strong deadbolt, a properly aligned door, a reinforced strike plate, and a sound frame. Smart locks add temporary codes, activity logs, remote locking, and integration with alarms, but those conveniences cannot compensate for weak construction.
Look for an appropriate ANSI/BHMA rating, an adequate deadbolt throw, structural strike-plate fastening, low-battery warnings, a key or mechanical override, and local keypad operation when the internet is unavailable. Protect accounts with unique passwords and two-factor authentication.
Smart-lock trade-offs
- Benefits: no hidden spare key, temporary access codes, activity logs, remote locking, and possible alarm integration.
- Risks: dead batteries, cloud or app outages, door misalignment, account compromise, and compatibility problems.
If the door rubs, the latch fails to extend fully, or the frame is weak, fix that first or consult a qualified locksmith. Never configure automatic locking in a way that traps occupants or interferes with emergency access. Yale’s official smart-lock information is a useful starting point for checking current models and compatibility.
6. Motion-activated exterior lighting
Lighting removes concealment and helps occupants, neighbors, and cameras see an approaching person. The College of Policing’s review of situational crime-prevention measures identifies exterior lights and door or window locks among the stronger stand-alone measures in the evidence it examined.
Cover doors, gates, paths, and concealed corners. Choose adjustable sensitivity and timeout, aim the light at people rather than into windows, and select weather-resistant hardware. Hardwired lights are dependable; solar or battery models are practical where wiring is difficult but can underperform in shade, storms, or winter.
Coordinate lighting with cameras rather than aiming a bright fixture directly into the lens. Exclude pets, branches, traffic, and busy sidewalks where possible so repeated false triggers do not make alerts meaningless. Focused lighting is usually better than excessive floodlighting or light trespass.

7. Glass-break or vibration sensors
Contact sensors report that a window or door has opened. Glass-break and vibration sensors may report an attempted forced entry earlier, making them useful for large glass doors, sidelights, and windows that are difficult to fit with conventional contacts.
Acoustic glass-break sensors listen for a characteristic sound; frame-mounted vibration sensors detect impact. Check coverage radius, sensitivity adjustment, glass-type compatibility, nuisance-noise performance, and proper placement. Test them in the system’s test mode without creating a real dispatch event.
These sensors are supplements, not replacements, for locks and reinforced frames. Curtains, distance, room acoustics, laminated or tempered glass, and incorrect installation can reduce performance. Follow the manufacturer’s compatibility guidance for double-pane and security glass.
8. Garage-door or driveway security sensor
Garages are frequently overlooked and may contain tools, ladders, vehicles, and an interior door into the home. A garage-door contact or tilt sensor can warn when the door opens unexpectedly; an interior contact protects the garage-to-house entry; and a camera can cover the driveway or door.
For long or secluded driveways, consider a compatible driveway motion or beam sensor. Check opener compatibility, battery backup, local operation during internet outages, shared-access controls, and safety features that prevent automatic closing when a person, pet, or vehicle is underneath. Secure sheds and garages and do not leave ladders or tools readily available.

Ground-floor windows
Use physical window locks first, followed by contact sensors. Add vibration or glass-break detection for large, secluded, or especially vulnerable glass areas.
Detached garage
Use a garage-door sensor, an interior contact sensor, and camera coverage. Protect the path between the garage and the house as carefully as the front door.
Large or secluded property
Prioritize several exterior camera views, focused lighting, a monitored alarm, overlapping coverage, and cellular backup. A single Wi-Fi camera is unlikely to cover a large perimeter reliably.

DIY versus professional monitoring
| Need | DIY setup | Professionally monitored setup |
|---|---|---|
| Lowest recurring cost | Usually better | Usually worse |
| Fast installation | Usually better | Depends on an appointment |
| Customization | Often better | May be ecosystem-limited |
| Emergency escalation | Resident must act | Monitoring center receives alarm events |
| Outage resilience | Must be checked carefully | Cellular backup may be available |
| False-alarm support | Resident manages it | Provider may help configure |
| Large or higher-risk property | Can be inadequate | Often more suitable |
Compare total cost, not just equipment price. Include monitoring, cloud storage, installation, replacement batteries, cellular service, permits, contract terms, and equipment that becomes unusable if a subscription ends.
Reliability, privacy, and outage checklist
- Map every exterior door, ground-floor window, garage entry, gate, and concealed approach.
- Decide whether each location needs delay, visibility, detection, or response.
- Repair locks, frames, windows, and sliding doors before installing connected products.
- Check Wi-Fi strength at every camera location and verify the system’s behavior without internet.
- Use battery backup for routers, hubs, cameras, or lights that must remain available during an outage.
- Consider cellular-backed monitoring for critical alarm events.
- Enable unique passwords, two-factor authentication, and low-battery alerts.
- Set motion zones to exclude roads, sidewalks, and neighboring property where possible.
- Test alerts while phones are muted, away from home, and using cellular data.
- Test power-loss, battery, local-siren, and recording behavior.
- Tell the monitoring provider before testing an alarm.
- Create a household response plan: verify remotely, call emergency services when appropriate, and do not enter a home that may contain an intruder.
MPDC advises people returning to a suspicious property not to enter and to contact police instead.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating cameras as physical protection: they detect and document but do not reinforce doors or windows.
- Ignoring the garage: it is often a weak perimeter and may connect directly to the home.
- Choosing a smart lock for its app alone: frame strength and lock alignment matter more.
- Assuming AI prevents crime: person detection mainly reduces nuisance alerts.
- Forgetting ongoing costs: storage, monitoring, batteries, installation, and replacements can exceed the initial purchase.
- Overlooking outages: Wi-Fi, electricity, cloud services, and batteries are all failure points.
- Over-securing exits: security hardware must never delay emergency escape.
- Expecting guaranteed police response: alarm-response policies vary.
- Buying all eight devices automatically: a small apartment may need only a few well-chosen layers.
- Chasing resolution numbers: lighting, field of view, placement, and recording quality often matter more than branding.
