Choose and install outdoor decorations safely

Decorative categories range beyond string lights: UL 588’s scope includes products such as wreaths, lanterns, stars, light sculptures, blow-molded figures, animated figures, simulated-branch products and motorized displays. That scope is a menu of product types, not proof that any particular item is suitable for outdoor use. Check the specific product’s label and instructions.

For electrical decorations, use these checks before installation:

  • Confirm outdoor use. CPSC advises using lights labeled for outdoor use outside. UL Solutions says its red holographic UL label identifies strings intended for indoor and outdoor use, while its green holographic label identifies indoor-only strings; still check the product’s own labeling and instructions.
  • Use GFCI protection. CPSC recommends plugging outdoor lighting into a GFCI-protected receptacle or portable GFCI.
  • Inspect every set. Discard damaged light sets. CPSC identifies minimum wire size, sufficient strain relief and overcurrent protection as relevant safety characteristics for seasonal and decorative lighting products; products missing specified characteristics present a risk of electrical shock or fire.
  • Fasten lights to firm support. Secure outdoor lights rather than leaving them loose or unsupported. Keep cords out of paths, doorways and places where they could be pinched or damaged.
  • Turn decorations off when unattended. Switch powered decorations off when leaving home or going to bed.
  • Follow the maker’s setup instructions. This is especially important for figures, sculptures and motorized displays, whose support and power needs vary by product.

ENERGY STAR says certified decorative light strings are available for indoor and outdoor use, and strings labeled for outdoor use undergo weathering tests. Its decorative-light-string page reports approximately 92% less energy than conventional incandescent strings and says certified products have a manufacturer-backed warranty of at least three years. A separate ENERGY STAR holiday light-string page reports approximately 70% less energy than incandescent light strings; these are figures from different ENERGY STAR pages and categories, not one universal comparison.
