How to choose a wreath for your outdoor space

Start with the installation point rather than the decoration. Measure the door or window area, consider the wreath’s weight, and make sure the selected hook or hanger can support it. A prominent entry can suit a fuller wreath, while a narrow door or window may look less crowded with a smaller or more open design.

  • For exposed locations: Favor a design that can be secured firmly and avoid delicate loose accents that could catch wind. Confirm the product is intended for the specific outdoor setting; a decorative appearance alone does not establish weather resistance.
  • For sheltered porches: Ribbon, ornaments and other decorative details may be easier to protect, but still follow the maker’s location and care instructions.
  • For a low-maintenance display: Consider an artificial wreath, checking its specifications for outdoor use, or choose a simple design with fewer pieces to secure.
  • For fresh greenery: Account for local temperature, moisture and wind conditions. Iowa State University Extension says cool, moist conditions are ideal for a fresh-cut wreath and recommends avoiding windy locations because moving air strips moisture from boughs. Its estimate that outdoor wreaths in Iowa may last from late November to early January or longer applies to typical Iowa holiday temperatures, not every climate. Iowa State University Extension: How to Create A Holiday Wreath.
  • For lights: Use only lights whose instructions permit the intended outdoor location, and plan how the cord will reach a suitable power source without becoming a trip or door-pinch hazard.

How to make a basic evergreen wreath

A straightforward handmade wreath needs a box-style wire wreath frame, florist wire, pruners and greenery. Iowa State University Extension notes that greens can be gathered or purchased from garden centers, florist shops, Christmas tree lots or farms. Gather only where you have permission, and choose material appropriate to your local conditions.

  1. Set out the frame, florist wire, pruners and small bundles of greenery.
  2. Attach the wire to the frame, then lay a small bundle of greens along the frame and wrap the wire firmly around the stems.
  3. Overlap the next bundle so it covers the previous stems and wire. Continue around the frame, keeping the bundles consistent in size.
  4. When the circle is filled, secure the final stems beneath the first bundle and fasten the wire. Trim stray stems with pruners.
  5. Add a bow, cones or other accents by attaching them securely; avoid leaving loose pieces that could shift in wind.
  6. Hang the wreath using a suitable hook or hanger and secure it so opening and closing the door will not knock it down.

How to hang and light an outdoor wreath safely

Check the product label and instructions for the permitted location and method of use. No general wreath idea establishes that a particular wreath, hook or light string is suitable for every exposure.

  • Attach the wreath securely so normal door movement does not dislodge it. Iowa State University Extension specifically advises securing the wreath to the door; its guidance describes wrapping wire around the door nail or hook to help keep the wreath in place as the door opens and closes.
  • For powered decorations outdoors, use GFCI-protected power as advised by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and government safety guidance. See the CPSC holiday decorating safety tips, Indiana Department of Homeland Security winter holiday safety guidance and Government of Québec holiday decorating fire-safety guidance.
  • Secure outdoor light strings against wind damage and inspect them before use. Follow the instructions for the particular lights and wreath rather than assuming a product is weatherproof.
  • After the season, Québec advises bringing outdoor decorative lights indoors to limit weather and sun damage. That advice applies to lights; it is not a blanket storage rule for every wreath material.
