How do I grow tomatoes in hanging baskets? Choose a compact, container-suitable tomato, give it adequate root space in a well-drained potting mix, hang it in full sun, and check moisture often. Hanging baskets can dry quickly, so watering and feeding need more attention than they do for many in-ground plants.

What tomatoes can I grow in a hanging basket? Look for dwarf or patio types described as suitable for containers. Their mature size and your basket’s capacity matter more than the label alone.

1. Choose a compact tomato variety

Start with a dwarf, patio, or otherwise compact tomato identified for container growing. University of Illinois Extension names Pixie cherry and Patio as examples in its container guidance. These are examples, not a guarantee of current availability; suitable varieties differ by region, so check the plant label for mature size and container suitability.

There is no established head-to-head trial here showing which tomato cultivar yields best in a hanging basket. Choose for manageable growth and a fit with the space and support you have, rather than expecting a particular harvest.

2. Match the basket to the plant’s roots

Tomatoes need more root room than many small container crops. In its 2022 container-growing guide, Illinois Extension gives a top diameter of at least 20 inches for tomatoes in a general container context. That is not a universal minimum for every hanging-basket cultivar, but it is a useful warning against choosing a tiny decorative basket without checking the plant’s needs.

Compare the basket’s capacity with the tomato’s expected mature size. A larger basket can hold more mix and generally gives roots more room, but it also makes the hanging load heavier—especially after watering. Make sure the hanger and its attachment point can safely support the filled basket.

3. Keep drainage open and choose a liner thoughtfully

Tomatoes need moisture, but roots should not sit in water. Use a basket with drainage holes. A wire basket needs a liner, such as coir or moss, to hold the growing mix. These porous liners can lose moisture quickly; a plastic barrier inside a moss-lined basket can slow that loss, but it must still allow drainage.

As Andrew Holsinger, a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, puts it: “Proper drainage is just as important as the amount of water added to the container.” Consider where runoff will go before hanging the basket, particularly above walkways, entrances, or belongings.

4. Fill it with container potting mix

Use a well-aerated container growing medium that drains while retaining enough moisture for roots. Do not fill the basket with garden soil: soil from a garden bed is not a substitute for potting mix in a container. Illinois Extension’s container-growing advice recommends potting mix and adequate drainage.

5. Hang it in full sun, securely

Tomatoes need a sunny position. Illinois Extension defines full sun as at least six hours of sunlight daily in its container guidance. Choose a spot that meets that threshold and is practical to reach for watering and harvesting.

6. Check moisture every day and water thoroughly

Check the mix daily rather than following a fixed watering calendar. Basket material, plant size, wind, heat, and rainfall all affect how quickly it dries. When watering is needed, wet the root zone thoroughly and continue until water drains through the basket. Avoid letting the mix dry out completely or remain waterlogged.

Hanging containers can dry faster than ground-level beds. Illinois Extension notes that some large plants in small hanging pots may need water twice a day; that is conditional guidance, not a schedule for every tomato basket. Hot, windy weather and a mature plant can increase demand. Water near the base where practical to keep foliage dry.

Keeping moisture more even helps reduce stress. Illinois Extension associates container drying with flower and fruit drop, and uneven watering with cracked or split tomato fruit. Adjust checks to the plant and conditions, not to a rigid rule.

7. Replace nutrients lost to frequent watering

Water moving through a container can carry nutrients with it. Use a fertilizer suitable for container tomatoes and follow its label, taking account of any fertilizer already included in the mix. Illinois Extension recommends slow-release fertilizer or liquid feeding about every two weeks for containers; its guidance also describes using liquid fertilizer at half strength and occasionally watering with plain water to leach excess salts. Follow product directions and avoid applying more than the label allows.
