To care for an orchid through winter, keep it warm enough for its type, give it adequate light, and adjust watering and feeding to its growth and how quickly its potting medium dries. Don’t stop watering altogether. These tips suit indoor orchids generally; where care differs, the guidance is labeled specifically for Phalaenopsis, the common moth orchid.

1. Identify your orchid before changing its care

Winter care depends on the orchid’s type, growth cycle, and conditions at home. Many Phalaenopsis are warm-growing and sensitive to cold, while some other genera tolerate much cooler nights. If you can, identify the genus and consult a care sheet for it before changing temperature, watering, or feeding. The American Orchid Society’s winter-care guidance explains why one temperature target or winter routine won’t fit every orchid.

2. Make sure it gets enough winter light

Shorter, cloudier days can reduce the light reaching an indoor orchid. For Phalaenopsis, the American Orchid Society’s culture sheet recommends an east-facing window; a shaded south- or west-facing window can also work. In overcast northern climates, a brighter south exposure may be needed.

If natural light is insufficient, supplemental light may help, particularly in northern latitudes. The Society’s indoor orchid-care guidance places artificial lights 1–2 feet above orchids; treat that as general placement guidance, not a universal specification for every light or orchid. Check the plant’s response and the light manufacturer’s directions before adjusting distance.

3. Protect it from drafts and cold glass

Move a tropical orchid away from a drafty window during very cold weather, and make sure its leaves don’t touch the glass. A heavy curtain or bubble wrap on the window can provide an insulating barrier. For Phalaenopsis, buds dropping can be a reason to check for drafts.

Cold injury may not show up immediately: the American Orchid Society notes that symptoms can appear hours to days after exposure. Frost damage destroys cells, so prevention matters more than trying to revive frozen tissue. See the Society’s winter orchid-care advice for cold-protection guidance.

4. Water according to drying, not a calendar

As winter light and temperatures fall, many orchids grow more slowly and their potting medium takes longer to dry. Adjust how often or how much you water to the plant, medium, and indoor conditions. Indoor orchids still need water: stopping all watering for winter is not a safe general rule.

For Phalaenopsis

Water thoroughly, then wait until the medium is nearly dry before watering again. Water in the morning so leaves can dry, and keep water out of the crown—the central point where leaves meet—to reduce the risk of crown rot. The American Orchid Society’s Phalaenopsis culture sheet describes this approach.

The Society’s winter-care page mentions watering as infrequently as every 10 days in a cool northern greenhouse. That is an example for those conditions, not a schedule to apply to a home orchid.

5. Add humidity only when the air is dry

Indoor air can become dry when heating runs frequently. If your home is dry, a humidifier or a pebble tray may help. For a pebble tray, add water without letting the pot sit in it; keep air moving around the plant, especially when humidity is high or temperatures are cool.

The American Orchid Society’s Phalaenopsis culture sheet gives a humidity range of 50–80% for Phalaenopsis and emphasizes air movement. That range is specific to its Phalaenopsis guidance, not a target for every orchid or every home. A tray is a local aid, not a guarantee of higher humidity throughout the room.

6. Adjust fertilizer to winter growth

When an orchid’s growth slows, its need for fertilizer often falls. Reduce or stop feeding if that matches the plant’s seasonal growth; winter-blooming orchids and orchids that keep actively growing may have different needs. Avoid a blanket rule that no orchid should be fertilized in winter. Excess fertilizer salts can damage roots and leaf tips, according to the American Orchid Society’s winter-care guidance.

7. Don’t leave the medium cold and wet

Cold, wet conditions can speed the breakdown of organic media such as bark or sphagnum and contribute to root or plant rot. Adjust watering so the medium has time to dry sufficiently in your home’s winter conditions, while following the needs of your orchid type. The arrival of winter alone is not a reason to repot a healthy orchid.

How winter care differs by orchid type

Before applying a care tip, compare your orchid’s cold tolerance, light needs, growth or rest cycle, and how its medium dries indoors. Phalaenopsis is a useful example of a warm-growing orchid, but its care details should not be treated as universal. The American Orchid Society’s orchid-care resources can help you find guidance for a specific type.
