You can put small amounts of many everyday food scraps down a garbage disposal, including soft fruit, non-fibrous vegetables, and some soft leftovers. The seven categories below are a starting point—not a universal safe-food list. Check your disposer’s owner manual first: recommendations differ by model, and the manual takes precedence.
Seven kinds of scraps a garbage disposal may handle
Feed scraps in small amounts rather than emptying a whole bowl at once. The categories below are generally suitable only if your specific model’s manual permits them.
- Small everyday food scraps. Scraped plate leftovers can go through a disposer when fed gradually and washed down with running water.
- Citrus rinds. Small pieces of lemon, lime, orange, or grapefruit rind are listed for InSinkErator Badger and Power series disposers. Check the food chart for your model before using them.
- Soft fruits and berries. Cut apples and other soft fruit into manageable pieces; berries are another example of scraps a disposer may handle.
- Non-fibrous vegetables and leafy scraps. Examples include cucumber, lettuce, cabbage, broccoli florets, cauliflower, and bell pepper trimmings.
- Bread, cereal, dairy, and other soft leftovers. Keep portions small; a disposer is not a substitute for putting large quantities of food waste in the trash or compost.
- Cooked boneless meat or fish. Only use these if your model’s chart allows them. InSinkErator lists cooked boneless beef, chicken, and salmon for its Power series.
- Limited peels or small hard scraps. Potato peels, small fruit pits, or small bones are not safe for every disposer. Use them only if the manual permits them, feed them gradually, and avoid large quantities at one time.
Why the owner manual matters
Manufacturers do not publish one universal list. InSinkErator’s recommendations vary across its Badger, Power, and Advanced series, while Whirlpool cautions against certain fibrous, hard, greasy, and starchy materials. A food listed for one model is not automatically suitable for another. Horsepower alone does not establish that a disposer can safely handle a particular scrap.
When deciding what to do with a questionable item, look it up in the manual or food chart for the exact model. This is especially important for potato peels, coffee grounds, eggshells, bones, and fruit pits, which are excluded by some manufacturers or models.
#1 Best Overall
- The garbage disposal splash guard replacement is specifically designed for InSinkErator Evolution series waste disposer. Diameter is 3 3/8", compatible with part QCB-AM. Please note that it's not compatible with the Badger series.
- Made of high-quality EPDM material, which is better than normal rubber disposal splash guards. The EPDM rubber material with excellent oil resistance is resistant to aging, cold and high temperature. The operating temperature range is about -50°C to +150°C. It is the best choice to replace dirty and old sink baffles.
- The sink baffle is easy to open under the weight of water. Used to prevent food and water from splashing upwards, providing a safe and comfortable environment. Noise reduction effect is also very good, which can reduce up to 70% of the operating noise of the garbage processor.
- The removable collar sink baffle garbage disposal stopper is extremely easy to install and wash, dishwasher safe. It can bring you a more pleasant and relaxing kitchen experience.
- What you get: Package include 2 pack 3 3/8" garbage disposal splash guards.
What not to put down a garbage disposal
- Fats, oils, or grease: They can congeal in plumbing. InSinkErator’s instruction is: “NEVER put fats, oils, or grease into the disposal.”
- Non-food objects: Keep plastic, glass, china, metal, bottle caps, and cans out of the disposer.
- Chemicals and harsh cleaners: Do not pour bleach into the disposer; InSinkErator specifically warns against it.
- Fibrous scraps: Celery, asparagus, artichokes, corn husks, onion skins, banana peels, and rhubarb may wrap around or jam parts in models not rated for them.
- Items your model excludes: Coffee grounds, eggshells, nut shells, bones, and fruit pits belong in the trash or compost if the manual says not to grind them.
- Large amounts of starchy or doughy food: Pasta, rice, potatoes, and potato peels can cause problems in quantity; flour, dough, and batter can thicken and pack into drains.
- Large bones and shellfish shells: Keep large whole bones and oyster or clam shells out.
How to use the disposer without overloading the drain
- Turn on cold water before switching on the disposal.
- Turn on the disposal, then feed scraps gradually rather than pushing in a large load at once.
- Wait until grinding has stopped before switching the disposal off.
- Keep cold water running briefly after grinding to clear the drain. Whirlpool says to “continue to run the cold water for 15 seconds after grinding is complete to flush the drain line.” Follow your own manual if it gives a different interval.
Septic systems and food scraps
If your home uses a septic system, check the disposer manual and the guidance for your tank before making the disposal part of your routine. Also check local wastewater rules. Whether a particular disposer and food-waste load suit your setup depends on the equipment and maintenance requirements; do not assume that a food permitted by the disposer manufacturer is automatically appropriate for every septic system.
Choosing a disposer for the scraps you handle
If you are selecting a unit, compare more than horsepower. Check the manufacturer’s food chart against the scraps you routinely handle, and consider grind stages, continuous-feed versus batch-feed operation, noise insulation, warranty, and septic compatibility. No single specification, including horsepower, is a reliable substitute for checking the model’s stated limits.

Food waste and landfill context
InSinkErator reports U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that 24% of municipal solid waste disposed in U.S. landfills is food waste and that food waste accounts for 58% of methane emissions from municipal solid-waste landfills. These figures are reported by InSinkErator; they do not mean a disposer is suitable for every scrap, plumbing system, or wastewater setup.
