There is no well-supported natural trick that will make an open backyard mosquito-free. The most reliable low-chemical approach is to remove places where mosquitoes breed, maintain water features, and use barriers to protect people. These seven practical steps can reduce breeding opportunities or bite exposure; they are not all adult-mosquito repellents.
Start by removing standing water
Mosquitoes lay eggs in water, so source reduction is the most direct household action. EPA guidance recommends emptying or managing common water-holding features before mosquitoes mature and disperse. EPA mosquito-control guidance
1. Empty small containers after rain or irrigation
Check buckets, toys, old tires, plastic covers, and other items that can collect water. Empty them and store them so they cannot refill, or dispose of items you no longer need. Include less obvious spots such as rain gutters and containers tucked behind sheds or under decks.
2. Refresh water in items that stay outdoors
Change water in bird baths, fountains, wading pools, rain barrels, and plant trays at least once a week. Where practical, scrub the container as part of the change and prevent water from collecting in saucers or creases nearby. EPA household mosquito-prevention advice

3. Drain temporary pools or fill them where suitable
Drain temporary pools when they are not in use. If a pool or depression is no longer needed, filling it with soil may be an option; consider drainage and the intended use of the area before doing so. Do not leave a shallow, stagnant pool as a permanent feature.
4. Keep swimming pools treated and circulating
Maintain swimming pools so the water is treated and circulating, including during periods when the pool is not being used. This is different from draining a temporary pool: a maintained swimming pool should not be left untreated and stagnant. EPA mosquito-control guidance

Use barriers to prevent bites
Barriers do not repel mosquitoes across the yard, but they can reduce access to people indoors and outdoors. EPA includes screens and netting in integrated mosquito-control advice. EPA integrated mosquito management
5. Repair screens and close gaps
Patch holes in window and door screens and make sure doors close without gaps. This protects indoor spaces; it will not reduce the number of mosquitoes outside.

6. Add netting and protective clothing where exposure is high
Use mosquito netting where it can cover people or an outdoor sitting or sleeping area, and wear long sleeves, long pants, and socks when mosquitoes are active. EPA recommends these measures as bite prevention. EPA advice on preventing mosquito bites

7. Try yellow bug lights near entrances, with realistic expectations
EPA says yellow “bug” lights may attract fewer mosquitoes than ordinary lights, but they are not repellents. Replacing a bulb may be a small way to reduce attraction near a doorway; it will not clear mosquitoes from a patio or yard. EPA tips to prevent mosquito bites

When water cannot be removed
For suitable water that cannot be emptied, a labeled larvicide containing Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti) may be an option for controlling mosquito larvae before they mature. It targets larvae in breeding water; it does not repel adult mosquitoes. Use only a product labeled for the specific water feature and follow its directions and precautions. What not to count on as a yard-wide solution
- Plants: The EPA guidance cited here does not establish that planting particular herbs or flowers will repel mosquitoes across an open yard.
- Sound devices: EPA says sound-wave devices are not registered as mosquito repellents and it has no safety or effectiveness data showing that they work. EPA insect-repellent guidance
- Misting systems: EPA says outdoor residential misting systems have not been studied sufficiently to document their effectiveness in controlling mosquitoes and have not been scientifically proven to control mosquitoes or prevent disease spread. EPA information on mosquito misting systems
- “Natural” products without label checks: Natural origin alone does not establish safety or effectiveness. For a personal or spatial repellent, check the active ingredient, approved use, and label directions. EPA says registered repellents can be expected to work within their approved label claims. Protect people when prevention is not enough
If you still need personal protection, choose an EPA-registered repellent and follow its label for application and reapplication. Protection can vary with activity, perspiration, water exposure, air temperature, and individual attractiveness to biting insects. Outdoor spatial repellents—such as lanterns, torches, diffusers, candles, and coils—can be affected by coverage, wind, and the time needed to build up in an area; use them outdoors unless their label says otherwise. Backyard mosquito control is usually a combination of actions, not a single product: water can remain on neighboring properties or in features that are hard to maintain.
