7 Natural Ways to Control Moles in Your Yard—Without False “For Good” Promises

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most reliable practical way to reduce mole damage is to trap moles in confirmed active surface tunnels. For gardens and other high-value areas, a properly installed underground barrier can prevent new tunneling. Castor-oil repellents and plant-based deterrents are lower-confidence options, not guaranteed cures.

No method can honestly promise to keep moles away permanently. Mole tunnels may cross property lines, and vacant territory can be recolonized. The realistic objective is to reduce active damage, protect priority areas, and monitor for new activity without resorting to illegal or dangerous home remedies.

First, make sure the animal is a mole

Moles are small, insect-eating mammals. Their primary food is earthworms, grubs, and other soil invertebrates—not the roots of your lawn or garden plants. Their presence is usually recognized by raised surface ridges, underground runways, and sometimes cone-shaped soil mounds.

Voles are often mistaken for moles. Voles are small rodents that can clip grass, chew bark, and gnaw plant roots. If you see narrow, clipped pathways through grass or direct damage to roots and stems, investigate for voles before choosing a control method. The distinction matters because a mole trap or mole repellent will not solve a vole problem. Penn State Extension’s identification guidance explains the difference between typical mole and vole damage.

Why “for good” is not a realistic promise

A mole on your property may be using a larger tunnel system that extends beneath neighboring yards. Removing one animal does not permanently close the territory, and repellents rarely create a lasting barrier across an entire property. New moles can also move into abandoned or lightly used tunnels.

  • Poultry & Pet Friendly: Once set, the trap will not be triggered by running poultry or pets above ground. It only activates when moles pass through underground tunnels.

That is why the best strategy is targeted rather than absolute:

  • Confirm which tunnels are active.
  • Trap or otherwise address activity in the most important runways.
  • Protect vegetable gardens, flower beds, and newly planted areas with physical barriers.
  • Repair and monitor the lawn so new activity is spotted early.

1. Trap an active surface tunnel

University extension recommendations consistently identify trapping as the most effective practical method for controlling individual moles. It is more dependable than sound devices, folk remedies, or attempts to flood the tunnel system.

How to identify an active tunnel

  1. Find a raised surface ridge or runway that appears to be in use.
  2. Compress a short section of the ridge with your foot or a tool.
  3. Check it again in approximately 24 hours.
  4. If the mole repairs the section, the tunnel is active. If it remains collapsed, choose another location.

Concentrate on renewed surface tunnels rather than old molehills. A fresh repair tells you where the animal is currently traveling and gives you a better chance of placing a trap effectively. This approach is recommended by University of Minnesota Extension’s mole-trapping guidance.

Setting the trap

Use an appropriate harpoon, scissor-jaw, or choker-loop mole trap designed for the type of runway you found. Set it in a straight, active tunnel according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The trap must make dependable contact with the runway rather than sitting loosely above an empty mound.

Check the trap at least daily, and follow all applicable state, local, and property rules. Keep children and pets away from the setup, and use gloves when handling traps or a captured animal. Do not claim that any trap is guaranteed humane or guaranteed to catch a mole; correct placement and local conditions make a major difference.

If you have confirmed an active runway, a mole trap is the most directly relevant tool for this method. Select a model intended specifically for moles and follow its safety and placement directions.

2. Install a barrier around a small garden or flower bed

Physical exclusion is one of the most dependable nonchemical ways to protect a defined area. It works best for a small vegetable garden, seed bed, or ornamental planting—not for an entire lawn.

For a small bed, Penn State describes a barrier approximately 24 inches wide arranged as an L:

  • Bury about 12 inches vertically along the bed’s perimeter.
  • Bend the remaining approximately 12 inches outward beneath the soil surface.
  • Overlap and secure joints so there is no easy gap at corners.
  • Inspect the perimeter after digging, planting, edging, or heavy soil disturbance.

The outward-facing underground section helps prevent an animal from simply tunneling beneath the vertical wall. Ordinary shallow plastic edging is not equivalent to a buried mole barrier.

A hardware cloth garden barrier or durable metal flashing can be useful for this job. Choose a material that will not quickly rust, collapse, or develop gaps, and use a mesh size appropriate for the species and the level of protection required. Wear gloves when cutting hardware cloth and cover or bend sharp edges away from people and animals.

3. Build a more durable perimeter around a high-value planting area

This is a reinforced version of the small-bed barrier, intended for a garden or ornamental area where repeated tunneling would cause substantial damage. It is worth considering when a temporary patch or narrow section of barrier has not held up.

Use durable metal flashing or hardware cloth around the entire area, bury it deeply enough to block the likely tunneling route, and pay particular attention to corners, gates, transitions, and places where the soil has been disturbed. The exact depth and design depend on soil type, bed construction, drainage, and whether the suspected animal is actually a mole.

Do not confuse this solution with installing edging around a whole lawn. A lawn-wide perimeter is usually expensive and disruptive, while a reinforced perimeter around a small bed focuses effort where it provides the most value. General wildlife-exclusion principles are discussed by University of Missouri Extension.

4. Try a labeled castor-oil repellent—with modest expectations

Castor oil is used as an active ingredient in some regulated or registered biopesticide products, and mole-repellent products containing it are widely marketed. However, that does not establish castor oil as a guaranteed mole cure. Extension evidence is mixed, and Penn State describes the effectiveness of castor-oil and similar remedies as doubtful or inconsistent.

If you want to try this approach:

  • Use only a product whose label specifically permits use against moles.
  • Read the entire label before application, including restrictions, protective equipment, watering instructions, and reapplication intervals.
  • Verify that the product is legally registered or otherwise permitted where you live.
  • Keep it away from children, pets, ponds, and areas where runoff could occur.
  • Do not pour food-grade or cosmetic castor oil into tunnels as though it were an established pesticide treatment.

A labeled castor-oil mole repellent is best treated as an optional, lower-confidence experiment after you have identified the problem. Product registration, permitted claims, and availability can vary by jurisdiction and change over time. The EPA’s biopesticide ingredient information provides useful regulatory context, but the product label controls how a particular formulation may be used.

5. Diagnose genuine grub problems instead of trying to eliminate all soil life

Moles may be more noticeable where the soil contains abundant prey, including white grubs. But the presence of moles does not prove that your lawn needs an insecticide or grub treatment. Earthworms are beneficial soil organisms, and indiscriminately removing them can harm soil health and affect birds and other wildlife.

Check before treating

Inspect a representative section of turf for actual grub damage and look for evidence such as turf that lifts easily, thinning patches, or visible larvae in the root zone. Distinguish a confirmed grub infestation from normal soil life. If the lawn has no meaningful grub injury, treating it solely to make the area less attractive to moles is not a responsible default.

If grubs are confirmed, improve turf health and choose a control appropriate for the grub species, season, region, and label. Biological or cultural approaches may be options in some situations. Milky spore is sometimes promoted as a natural control for certain white grubs, but establishment can take several years and results depend on the grub species and local conditions. It should not be presented as a quick mole remedy.

There is also an important trade-off: reducing prey may temporarily cause more digging as moles search for food. Food-source management is therefore a supporting step, not a replacement for trapping or exclusion. Penn State discusses the risks of unnecessary insect and earthworm control in its mole-management guidance.

6. Treat plant-based mole repellents as low-confidence experiments

Marigold borders, mole plant or caper spurge, castor bean, and similar plants are frequently described as natural mole repellents. They are not on the same evidence footing as trapping or physical exclusion. Penn State notes that marigold borders have not been scientifically tested for this purpose and that the effectiveness of mole plant and castor bean is doubtful.

If you grow these plants for ornamental reasons, do not assume they will protect the surrounding yard. Be especially cautious with castor bean and Euphorbia species:

  • Some can be poisonous if eaten.
  • Plant identification can be difficult, particularly for children.
  • Some may become invasive or troublesome weeds depending on the region.
  • They are poor choices around children, pets, or edible gardens unless you have verified their safety and local status.

Use plant borders only as a low-confidence trial, never as the main control plan. Do not plant a toxic species merely because an online list calls it a “mole plant.”

7. Repair the lawn and monitor for fresh activity

Repair is not population control, but it is an essential final step. Once active animals have been removed, activity has shifted, or a protected bed has been secured:

  1. Rake down raised ridges carefully.
  2. Refill or level collapsed sections where needed.
  3. Reseed damaged turf with a grass mix suited to the site.
  4. Water and establish the repaired areas according to the seed or sod instructions.
  5. Inspect the property regularly for fresh ridges or repaired test sections.

Do not trap every old mound or assume that a repaired lawn means the moles are gone. If a new ridge appears, compress a short section and check whether it is repaired within roughly 24 hours. That monitoring cycle lets you focus on current runways instead of wasting effort on inactive tunnels.

What not to use

Avoid dangerous, illegal, or unproven mole remedies.

  • Ultrasonic, magnetic, vibration, and noise devices: none has been proven effective for mole control in the cited extension guidance.
  • Mothballs: they are not a lawful or safe general-purpose mole repellent when used outdoors.
  • Household chemicals, broken glass, chewing gum, or exhaust fumes: these can injure people, pets, wildlife, and soil, and may violate environmental or pesticide laws.
  • Flooding tunnels: it is unlikely to reach the entire interconnected tunnel system and may create moist conditions favorable to earthworms, potentially making the area more attractive to moles.
  • Unlabeled pesticide applications: do not use a product against moles unless its label permits that use.

The EPA advises consumers to avoid illegal pesticide products and to look for a valid EPA registration number when a product makes a pesticide or public-health claim, subject to the federal minimum-risk exemption. Read the label and check your state’s requirements before buying or applying any repellent.

A practical decision plan

What you observe Best next step What to avoid
Raised ridge repairs within about 24 hours Set an appropriate mole trap in the active runway and check it daily. Trapping inactive mounds or relying on sound devices.
Damage is concentrated in a vegetable or flower bed Install a properly buried L-shaped barrier around the priority area. Assuming shallow edging will stop tunneling.
Unclear root damage, clipped pathways, or gnawing Identify whether the animal is a vole rather than a mole. Applying mole controls before identification.
Confirmed grub damage Choose a species- and region-appropriate grub-management approach. Treating all earthworms or applying pesticides without a diagnosis.
Persistent activity crossing property lines Combine monitoring, targeted trapping, and priority-area exclusion; consider a local wildlife-control service if you cannot safely manage it. Expecting one treatment to create permanent, property-wide exclusion.

For difficult or recurring problems, ask any professional about licensing, the control method, animal handling, follow-up visits, and compliance with local wildlife rules. Availability and requirements vary by location.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most effective natural way to get rid of moles?

Targeted trapping in a confirmed active surface tunnel is the most consistently supported practical control. For a small garden or valuable bed, a properly buried physical barrier can provide longer-lasting protection than repellents.

Do coffee grounds, chewing gum, or mothballs keep moles away?

There is no reliable basis for recommending these remedies, and mothballs, chemicals, broken glass, and exhaust fumes can be dangerous or unlawful outdoors. Use trapping, exclusion, and monitoring instead.

Will castor oil permanently repel moles?

No. Castor-oil mole repellents have mixed evidence and should not be treated as guaranteed. If used, choose only a product labeled for mole control and follow its current label exactly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I kill earthworms to stop moles?

No. Earthworms are beneficial, and indiscriminate treatment can harm soil health, birds, and other wildlife. Investigate and treat a genuine grub problem only when damage is confirmed.

How can I tell whether a mole tunnel is active?

Compress a short section of a raised surface tunnel and inspect it about 24 hours later. A repaired section is active; an untouched collapse is less likely to be a current runway.

The Bottom Line

Start with identification and an activity test. Trap confirmed active tunnels, install a deep physical barrier around gardens that matter, and use labeled repellents only as cautious secondary options. Repair and monitor the lawn afterward. You can substantially reduce mole damage, but no natural remedy can honestly guarantee that moles will stay away forever.
