7 Highly Useful Plants to Add to Your Garden

The most useful garden plants do more than one job: they can provide food, culinary flavor, flowers for pollinators, habitat for butterflies, or year-round visual interest. This adaptable shortlist combines those benefits, but it is not a universal planting prescription. Choose varieties that suit your climate, sunlight, soil, water, and available space.

How to choose plants that will work in your garden

Start with the conditions you have, not a plant list. Check winter hardiness, hours of sunlight, soil drainage and acidity, moisture, mature size, and how much room you can give a plant. Native species are often well suited to local growing conditions and can need less maintenance; regional extension guidance can help you choose. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension explains the benefits of native plants and pollinator-friendly planting in its guide to providing food for pollinators. For a regional example of site planning and edible landscaping, see UF/IFAS’s north-central Florida guide.

“Useful” does not have to mean edible. A plant may earn its place through flavor, flowers, wildlife habitat, foliage, or several of these at once. The seven choices below are examples to adapt: where one does not suit your conditions, look for a locally appropriate plant that offers the same benefit.

Seven useful plants to consider

1. Basil: fresh leaves and pollinator flowers

Basil is a straightforward culinary choice, and its flowers can attract pollinators. Pinching flower buds can encourage continued leaf production, but that removes the blooms. If you want both, grow enough plants to harvest from some and leave others unpinched to flower. UF/IFAS includes basil among the herbs that can support pollinators when allowed to bloom in its herb pollinator-garden guide.

Ideal for foodies, wellness enthusiasts, and parents seeking screen-free activities.

2. Chives: edible leaves and purple blooms

Chives provide a mild onion flavor, while their purple flower heads add color and can offer forage for pollinators. They are a useful low-growing perennial in some edible landscapes, but whether they return reliably depends on local conditions. Let at least some plants flower if you want the blooms as well as the leaves.

3. Dill: a kitchen herb and swallowtail host plant

Dill adds culinary flavor and fine-textured foliage to a bed. UF/IFAS also identifies it as a host plant for swallowtail butterflies. Caterpillars may eat the leaves; that feeding is part of the plant’s habitat value, not necessarily a sign that something has gone wrong. Grow extra dill if you want to harvest while leaving some foliage for caterpillars. UF/IFAS discusses dill and other host herbs in its guide to herbs for pollinator gardens.

4. Oregano: seasoning and flowers for pollinators

Oregano is a culinary herb that can also provide pollinator forage when it flowers. It suits a garden where you want useful leaves and flowers without separating those purposes. Allow some plants to bloom; regular harvesting from every plant can reduce the flowers available to visiting insects.

5. Mint: versatile leaves, best contained

Mint is useful for cooking and drinks, and its flowers can attract pollinators. UF/IFAS describes it as easy for beginners, but mint can spread quickly. Grow it in a container or use another containment strategy if you do not want it moving into neighboring beds. UF/IFAS lists mint among its examples of bee plants.

6. Blueberry: fruit, blossoms, and shrub structure

A blueberry can provide fruit, spring flowers, and ornamental value as a shrub. Its needs are specific: UF/IFAS’s north-central Florida guidance calls for acidic, well-drained soil and full sun for best plant health and fruiting. It also recommends two different cultivars of the same blueberry type for cross-pollination in that region. These are regional recommendations, not cultivar instructions for every climate; check locally suitable varieties and their pollination needs before planting. See the UF/IFAS edible ornamental landscaping guide for the regional details.

7. A locally suited native flowering plant: forage and habitat

Use this spot for a flowering native that fits your region and site. Native plants can provide food for local pollinators, and some are host plants on which particular caterpillars depend. Black-eyed Susan is one possible example: UF/IFAS describes it as attractive to bees and butterflies and tolerant of drought and salt in coastal gardens. It is not a universal choice; select a native species adapted to your climate, soil, and moisture. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension explains why native plants, host plants, and varied blooms matter in its pollinator food guide.

Make the planting useful to pollinators, too

A handful of flowering plants can do more when their bloom periods overlap across the season and their flower shapes and sizes vary. Grouping plants makes flowers easier for pollinators to find. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension recommends diverse blooms and grouped plantings, while UC Agriculture and Natural Resources advises planning for flowering-time overlap, providing sunlight for most flowering plants, and avoiding pesticides in pollinator gardens. UC ANR’s home-garden pollinator guidance also notes that leaving seed heads at season’s end can support wildlife.

  • Allow some herbs to flower while harvesting from others; this preserves both culinary harvest and blooms.
  • Include plants that flower at different times rather than relying on one short burst of blooms.
  • Leave caterpillar host plants such as dill available for feeding, and expect some foliage loss.
  • Avoid pesticides in pollinator plantings.
  • Where practical, leave seed heads at the end of the season for wildlife.

UC ANR’s article, published March 3, 2026, states: “Animal pollinators are necessary for the reproduction of 90% of flowering plants and the majority of our fruit, nut and vegetable crops.” The article attributes that figure to UC ANR; its cited passage does not identify the original study.

Other edible options—and a safety check

Strawberries, cranberries, and edible flowers may suit an edible landscape where local conditions support them. Before eating any plant, confirm its identity and make sure it has not been treated with pesticides or other substances unsuitable for food. The University of Vermont Extension discusses edible landscaping and these identification and treatment cautions in its edible landscaping guidance.

Regional guidance is a starting point, not a universal recipe

Recommendations vary by climate. For example, the University of New Hampshire Cooperative Extension’s pollinator plant suggestions are intended for northern New England, while UF/IFAS’s blueberry cultivar and growing guidance cited here concerns north-central Florida. Use local extension advice or a knowledgeable native-plant nursery to identify substitutes that fill the same roles in your area. The UNH regional pollinator guide and the UF/IFAS edible landscaping guide illustrate why regional fit matters.
