7 Care Tips for Potted Hydrangeas: Indoors, Outdoors, and Through Winter

Potted hydrangea care depends on whether it is a florist plant indoors or a shrub outdoors. Match its light, watering, pruning, and winter care to its type and climate.

Care for a potted hydrangea by matching its light, watering, pruning, and winter protection to its type and location. A florist hydrangea kept indoors has different needs from a nursery-grown shrub outdoors, and there is no single care calendar that fits every variety and climate.

1. Choose the right location for your hydrangea

For a blooming florist hydrangea indoors

Place it in bright, indirect light and keep it cool—about 60–65°F, the indoor conditions Iowa State University Extension recommends for a blooming florist plant. Keep it out of intense direct sun and away from hot, dry air.

For a shrub growing outdoors

Light needs vary with hydrangea type and climate. Hydrangeas can tolerate shade, but heavy shade may reduce flowering. In a hot climate, afternoon shade can help protect the plant. Connecticut Extension describes these general outdoor considerations, but the best spot depends on your specific hydrangea and local conditions.

2. Water when the soil needs it

Check the potting mix rather than watering by a fixed calendar. For a blooming indoor hydrangea, Iowa State Extension advises watering as the soil becomes dry to the touch. More generally, container mix should not dry out completely. Water thoroughly until moisture runs from the drainage holes, then let excess water drain away.

3. Make sure the pot drains

Use a container with drainage holes so extra water can escape. If the pot sits inside a decorative cover or on a saucer, empty pooled water instead of leaving the roots standing in it. A decorative cover can hide trapped water even when the surface of the soil looks dry.

4. Read wilting and leaf damage as clues

Drooping leaves that perk up after watering can signal that the plant needs water. Brown leaf edges or leaf drop can point to overwatering. Oregon State University Extension presents these as possible signs, not definitive diagnoses: check the soil and the pot’s drainage before changing your watering routine.

5. Identify the type before pruning

Pruning at the wrong time can remove next season’s flower buds. Bigleaf hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) bloom on one-year-old wood. Connecticut Extension advises pruning after flowering because buds for the following season are set later; Missouri Extension also warns that poorly timed pruning can cut off those buds.

Other hydrangea types have different flowering habits. Identify your plant before pruning, and do not treat one month or pruning schedule as universal.

6. Plan winter care around the plant and your climate

A potted hydrangea’s roots have less insulation from winter cold than roots in the ground. University of Maryland Extension recommends monitoring container plants for water through winter; a pot can dry out even when the plant is dormant. How to protect it depends on your climate, the cultivar, and whether it is a florist plant or a nursery-grown shrub.

Do not assume a florist hydrangea will thrive or flower reliably outdoors. Iowa State University Extension notes that florist cultivars are not reliably winter-hardy in Iowa and may fail to flower reliably even if they survive. Hardiness varies, so check the plant’s identity and local guidance before leaving it outside or planting it in the ground.

7. Treat flower color as optional, type-specific care

For bigleaf hydrangeas, soil pH affects aluminum availability and can influence whether flowers are blue or pink. This does not apply to every hydrangea, and changing color is not guaranteed by adding a quick soil amendment. Connecticut Extension recommends testing the soil before making amendments.

Which care advice applies to your plant?

Situation What to focus on
Blooming florist plant indoors Bright, indirect light; cool temperatures of 60–65°F; check soil and water as it becomes dry to the touch, following Iowa State University Extension guidance.
Nursery-grown shrub outdoors Choose light based on the hydrangea type and local climate. Check cultivar hardiness before deciding on winter protection or planting it in the ground.
Any hydrangea in a container Keep the mix from drying completely, use drainage holes, and empty water that collects in a saucer or decorative cover.
Bigleaf hydrangea you plan to prune or recolor Account for its old-wood flowering habit before pruning; test soil before considering color-related amendments.
