Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

For Alexa features, consider the Echo Spot; for a smart speaker without a clock display, the Echo Dot or Google Nest Mini may fit better.
These seven options are not all the same kind of product. Only the Horizon 2 is a conventional clock-radio speaker in this list; some are smart speakers or displays, and the JBL Authentics models are music-first alternatives rather than standalone alarm clocks. If an alarm must work without Wi-Fi, a phone or cloud service, that distinction matters.
Quick comparison: clock radios, smart alarms and music-first speakers
Bluetooth describes a way to play audio; it does not mean a speaker contains a clock or a dependable alarm. The table separates products with a visible clock from speakers that can set assistant alarms and larger speakers that may be useful alongside a separate alarm.

Which of the seven should you choose?
1. JBL Horizon 2 FM: best true Bluetooth alarm-clock speaker
The Horizon 2 is the most direct fit if you want one bedside appliance with its own clock and alarm controls. JBL lists Bluetooth streaming, FM radio, a front LCD, two independent alarms, built-in alarm tones, radio wake-up options, ambient lighting, snooze and two USB charging ports on its U.S. product page. Its physical rotary control handles functions including volume, alarm adjustment, snooze and lighting.
JBL specifies 2 × 5 W RMS output, a 75 Hz–20 kHz frequency response at -6 dB, Bluetooth 4.2, a 3.5-mm audio input and dimensions of approximately 7.0 × 6.4 × 3.0 inches at about 1.78 lb. Those specifications describe a compact bedside speaker, not a rechargeable travel speaker. It runs on mains power; JBL’s specification sheet lists a CR2032 battery for alarm backup. Do not treat that backup cell as power for ordinary music playback.
- Choose it for: a real clock display, tactile snooze and alarm controls, FM, ambient light or separate alarms for two people.
- Think twice if: you need battery-powered listening, Wi-Fi streaming, a voice assistant or modern multiroom features. Bluetooth 4.2 is also an older implementation than on many current portable speakers.
The U.S. model discussed here is the FM version. JBL’s separate DAB specification sheet describes a regional DAB/DAB+/FM variant; do not assume its radio bands apply to the U.S. model. JBL’s refurbished listing showed the black unit sold out at the observed $89.96 price, so verify condition and stock rather than assuming refurbished availability.
2. Amazon Echo Spot: best smart bedside alarm speaker
The Echo Spot is designed as a bedside smart alarm speaker, with a small display for time and alarm information and Alexa for alarms, timers, routines, weather and music. It is the most natural choice here if you want voice-controlled bedside functions and a visible time display without a larger smart-display screen. TechRadar also identifies it as an alarm-clock speaker in its Alexa speaker coverage.
It is not a conventional Bluetooth clock radio. Its smart functions depend on mains power, Wi-Fi and Amazon’s ecosystem; Bluetooth is an additional playback capability, not a substitute for the smart setup. Alexa and cloud dependence may not suit readers who want an offline, account-free alarm. The small speaker is intended for bedside listening, not room-filling or outdoor sound. Amazon’s U.S. product page is the place to confirm current price, availability and supported features.
3. Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen): best Alexa alarm speaker without a clock display
The Echo Dot adds Alexa alarms, timers, routines, music and voice control in a compact format, with Bluetooth support. It makes sense for an Alexa household that does not need to read the time from the speaker. What it does not provide is a visible clock on the standard model: you set and hear alarms through Alexa rather than using a conventional clock face and physical alarm controls.
Alexa features require mains power and Wi-Fi. Do not buy it expecting an offline clock-radio experience or a self-contained portable alarm. Amazon’s product page has current U.S. model and availability details; the exact current price was not established here. 4. Google Nest Mini: best compact Google Assistant alternative
The Nest Mini is a screen-free smart speaker for Google Home households. It can provide Assistant alarms and timers, while Bluetooth is a secondary way to play audio. Its small footprint suits a nightstand, but there is no clock display, conventional alarm buttons or built-in radio listed in the available product information.
Google Assistant features require Wi-Fi and mains power, so this is not an offline clock-radio replacement. Check that the exact Nest Mini model is available in your region before purchase: product naming and retail availability can change. Google’s U.S. product page and Nest support site are the relevant places to confirm current features and support.
5. Google Nest Hub (2nd Gen): best smart-display alarm station
The Nest Hub combines a speaker with a larger screen for the time, alarms, weather, routines and media controls. Choose it if visible information and Google Home control matter more than a traditional clock-radio shape. It includes Bluetooth alongside Wi-Fi-based smart features, but it remains a smart display rather than a conventional Bluetooth alarm clock.
It is mains-powered and its smart functions depend on Wi-Fi. The larger screen may be useful by day but is worth considering in a bedroom: check the current brightness and night-mode settings, and whether its display behavior suits your sleep preferences. As with other assistant devices, microphones and cloud-connected features bring privacy and account considerations. Google’s U.S. product page and Nest support provide current product and setup details.
6. JBL Authentics 200: best larger home speaker to pair with a separate alarm
The Authentics 200 is a music-first home speaker, not a bedside clock. JBL’s home-speaker catalog positions the Authentics range around home listening with Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and voice-assistant features. It may suit a bedroom or office where better music playback is the priority, but the available information does not establish a dedicated display, independent clock alarms or power-outage alarm behavior for this model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDo not count on it as your only wake-up device unless the current model manual confirms the alarm workflow you intend to use. For scheduled assistant alarms, verify which assistant, account and network connection are required. A separate clock or phone alarm is the safer pairing if waking on time matters.
7. JBL Authentics 300: best music-first option if you want to move the speaker
JBL describes the Authentics 300 as a portable smart-home speaker with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and voice assistants; see the Bluetooth-speaker catalog for the range. It is the most plausible pick among these two Authentics models if you want to move a speaker around the home, while retaining Wi-Fi and Bluetooth flexibility.

It is not a self-contained alarm clock: no dedicated clock display is listed, and the available information does not establish its precise alarm, battery-runtime or outage behavior. Use a separate alarm or confirm the current manual’s assistant and power requirements before relying on it to wake you. Its music-first design is difficult to justify if the main purchase need is a clock and alarm.
What counts as a Bluetooth speaker with an alarm clock?
Listings can blur four different devices. Identify which one you are buying before comparing sound ratings or prices.
- True clock-radio speakers have a visible clock and alarm controls, often with a radio and snooze. The Horizon 2 is the clear example in this guide.
- Smart speakers with alarms let an assistant set alarms but may have no screen. Echo Dot and Nest Mini fall into this group; they are alarm-capable speakers, not visible clocks.
- Smart displays show a clock and alarms alongside assistant features. Echo Spot and Nest Hub are screen-equipped smart devices, typically requiring Wi-Fi and mains power for their smart functions.
- Portable Bluetooth speakers paired with a phone alarm are not all-in-one alarm clocks. Their behavior depends on the phone, audio routing, Bluetooth connection and speaker power state.
Before buying any model, check whether it has a visible clock, dedicated or assistant-set alarms, weekday scheduling, snooze, selectable wake sounds, offline alarm operation, Wi-Fi requirements, backup power and display dimming. A feature list that merely says “Bluetooth” answers none of those alarm questions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Will the alarm work without a phone, Wi-Fi or power?
Phone independence
The Horizon 2 has its own clock and alarm functions, so its basic alarm does not depend on a paired phone. Smart speakers and displays set alarms through their assistant ecosystem; the available product information does not establish every model’s behavior when offline, after a restart or after a network interruption. Confirm those cases in the current manual or support documentation if they are critical.
A phone alarm sent to a Bluetooth speaker is a different arrangement. If the speaker disconnects, shuts down, is out of range or changes audio routing, the alarm may come from the phone instead of the speaker—or not play as you expected. Test your exact phone and speaker combination rather than assuming Bluetooth guarantees alarm playback.
Power interruptions
JBL lists a CR2032 alarm-backup battery for the Horizon 2, but does not describe it as a source for normal music playback. The smart speakers and displays in this guide are mains-powered; no full-device battery operation is established for them. If a missed alarm would have serious consequences, retain an independent battery-powered alarm or phone backup, and test recovery after a brief outage.

“Wake to music” can mean very different things: a built-in tone, FM radio, a streaming service launched by an assistant routine, or audio routed from a phone. The Horizon 2 lists built-in tones and radio wake-up options. For assistant devices, check the current documentation for the service, network and account requirements. Do not assume a phone playlist will start reliably through Bluetooth at a scheduled time.

How to choose for a bedroom
Choose a true clock radio if you want simple, local controls
Pick a dedicated clock-radio design if you want to see the time, hit a physical snooze button, use FM, and set alarms without relying on an assistant ecosystem. The Horizon 2 offers those features, plus Bluetooth playback, USB charging and ambient light. If you need routine automation, remote voice control or streaming without a phone, its simpler design is a limitation rather than an advantage.
Choose a smart speaker if alarms and voice routines matter more than a display
Choose the Echo Dot for Alexa or Nest Mini for Google Home when a screen is unnecessary and the household already uses that assistant. Both bring more than a conventional clock radio can, but their core smart value depends on Wi-Fi and mains power. They are poor fits for anyone specifically requiring a visible bedside clock.
Choose a smart display if you want a screen
The Echo Spot offers a compact bedside display in an Alexa device; the Nest Hub gives you a larger Google display and smart-home station. A screen can make alarms and information easier to check, but adds brightness and privacy considerations. Check dimming behavior and microphone controls in the current product settings before placing one next to the bed.

Choose a music-first speaker only with a separate alarm plan
The Authentics 200 and 300 are for buyers who put music quality and speaker flexibility first. The available information does not establish that either is a dependable standalone alarm clock, so pair one with a dedicated clock or a tested phone alarm if waking reliably is essential. A separate alarm clock plus a quality speaker can be a better arrangement than trying to make one product do both jobs.
Sound, Bluetooth and practical bedside use
There is no uniform independent listening test across these seven products in the available evidence, so a precise sound-quality ranking would overstate what is known. For a bedside speaker, prioritize clear alarm tones and speech at low volume over maximum loudness. Larger home speakers are the more natural choice when fuller, room-filling music matters, but that does not make them better alarm clocks.
Bluetooth is useful for direct playback from a phone, but it does not by itself provide voice control, multiroom playback, scheduled streaming or a reliable alarm. Wi-Fi smart speakers can support richer routines and streaming, but depend more on network services and accounts. The Horizon 2’s Bluetooth 4.2 and 3.5-mm input make it a straightforward audio accessory; smart-speaker Bluetooth should be treated as an additional connection, not the main reason to buy.
Privacy and controls to check before setup
Assistant speakers and displays use microphones for voice features and connect to cloud services. If that trade-off is uncomfortable, consider the Horizon 2’s local clock-radio controls instead. For any smart model, inspect its physical microphone-mute control, account and recording settings, and what functions remain when the microphone is muted; do not assume muting preserves every voice-driven alarm or routine.
Recommended Free Tools
For any model, verify the controls that affect daily use: whether snooze is physical, whether alarm volume is separate from music volume, whether weekday and weekend schedules are available, whether the display dims enough, and what happens to playback when an alarm starts. The product pages and manuals should answer model-specific questions; do not infer them from the fact that a device supports Bluetooth.
Models and setups to approach cautiously
- Older Lenovo Smart Clock models: they appear in older recommendations, but current availability and support are uncertain. Do not treat old coverage as proof of new stock or a current warranty path.
- Unbranded marketplace clock speakers: check warranty, return terms, backup behavior and whether alarms work without a phone before purchasing.
- Portable speakers sold as alarm solutions: unless they have their own clock and alarm, they still rely on another device to wake you.
General Bluetooth-speaker roundups tend to focus on sound and portability, while portable-speaker guides address a different purchase need. Those lists can help compare music speakers, but they do not establish that a model has an offline clock, alarm backup or dependable wake-up behavior.
