For most U.S. homeowners, the Level Lock Pro is the best overall smart lock because it preserves a conventional-looking exterior, supports Apple Home Key and Matter over Thread, and includes integrated door-position sensing. Choose the Schlage Sense Pro for premium Apple UWB hands-free unlocking, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi for fingerprint entry, the eufy FamiLock S3 Max for a lock-and-video-doorbell combination, or the Yale Approach if you need an interior retrofit that preserves your existing exterior lock and keys.
For a garage entry door, the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever is the most appropriate pick when the door uses a lever or latch. For the large overhead vehicle door, however, you do not need a smart lock—you need a compatible smart garage-door opener or controller such as myQ Smart Garage Control.

| Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever | Garage man doors, side doors, and interior entries | Lever or latch replacement | Keypad codes, app, remote access, activity history, mechanical key on keyed model | Built-in Wi-Fi and Schlage Home | Keypad, app/Bluetooth, key on applicable model | Varies by use and model | From $309 | A lever is not a replacement for a deadbolt on a highly exposed exterior door |
The lineup deliberately covers four different hardware situations: a standard deadbolt replacement, an interior retrofit, a lever replacement, and the separate category of an overhead garage-door controller. A feature-rich lock is still the wrong purchase if it does not fit the door.

1. Level Lock Pro: best overall
Best for: front doors where appearance, Apple Home Key, and a normal-looking exterior matter.
The Level Lock Pro hides its smart hardware inside the door instead of placing a large touchscreen, fingerprint reader, or camera on the exterior. That makes it a strong choice for a traditional front entry, architecturally sensitive renovation, or homeowner who wants keyless access without making the door look heavily electronic.

Minimize obstacles such as walls, metal objects, and interference sources for a stronger connection.
- App Control with Real-Time Access:Control smart lock remotely via the Philips Home Access App: lock/unlock, manage user codes/fingerprints, check your door lock status, and monitor access history in real time, etc, whether you’re at work or on vacation.
- Voice Assistant Compatible:Hands full? No problem. Use voice commands with Alexa or Google Assistant to lock or check the status of your front door lock set effortlessly.
- Versatile Passcode Options: This Keypad deadbolt supports permanent, one-time, periodic, and recurring PIN codes—perfect for family, guests, housekeepers, or Airbnb use. Easily manage and share access through the app for ultimate convenience and control.
- 0.3S Fingerprint Fast Access:With this fingerprint keyless entry door lock, unlock your door in 0.3 seconds with fast, secure biometric access. Store multiple fingerprints for family and trusted visitors.
It supports Matter over Thread, Bluetooth, Apple Home Key, Level key fobs, and physical keys. It also includes integrated door-open/door-closed detection without an exposed external magnet. Level lists battery life of up to one year under typical conditions using one CR2 lithium battery, and says the lock is BHMA Certified AAA while listing ANSI/BHMA Grade 1/A security information.
Important limitation: it is not a Wi-Fi-connected lock with every remote feature ready out of the box. Matter control requires a compatible Matter-over-Thread hub or Thread Border Router. The optional Level Keypad is listed at $79, and the Level Connect Wi-Fi Bridge is also listed at $79. Add those costs if your household needs exterior code entry or remote connectivity without an existing compatible setup.
- Choose it if: you want the cleanest appearance, Apple Home Key, door-status information, and a conventional physical key.
- Skip it if: keypad entry is essential and you do not want to buy an accessory, or if your door needs a mortise or unusual lock replacement.
- Installation warning: confirm the deadbolt fits and moves freely before installing the motor. A concealed motor does not solve a sagging door or poorly aligned strike.
2. Schlage Sense Pro: best premium Apple lock
Best for: Apple households that want hands-free approach unlocking in addition to a keypad and Apple Home Key.
The Schlage Sense Pro is the premium choice for an iPhone or Apple Watch household. Schlage says its Converge technology and Ultra Wideband calculate approach speed, trajectory, and motion to enable hands-free unlocking rather than simply relying on a broad geofence. It also supports Apple Home Key tap-to-unlock, keypad codes, one-touch locking, auto-lock, the Schlage Home app, built-in Wi-Fi, and Matter over Thread.
The keypad supports up to 250 customized access codes. The lock uses four AA batteries and includes a USB-C jump-start port. It has no exposed conventional keyway, which Schlage says removes bumping and picking attacks against that keyway. Its listed ratings are ANSI/BHMA residential Grade BAA and ANSI commercial Grade 2.
Hands-free unlocking has specific requirements. Schlage lists an iPhone 11 or later, excluding iPhone SE and iPhone 16e, with iOS 18.5 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later, excluding Apple Watch SE, with watchOS 11.5 or later. Apple pairing requires a compatible Thread-enabled Apple home hub such as an Apple TV 4K, HomePod mini, or second-generation HomePod. Tap-to-unlock has broader device requirements than hands-free UWB unlocking.

The Sense Pro became available on June 29, 2026, after its June 16 announcement. At $399 MSRP, it is costly, and it is too new as of August 10, 2026 to make confident claims about long-term reliability or real-world battery performance. It is best described as the newest premium Apple hands-free option—not the proven best smart lock for every household.
- Choose it if: you carry a supported iPhone or Apple Watch and want approach-based unlocking without giving up codes.
- Skip it if: your household uses Android, does not need UWB, or wants the highest commercial rating available in this group.
- Recovery plan: keep the keypad usable and learn the USB-C emergency-power procedure before the batteries are depleted.
3. Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi: best fingerprint lock
Best for: families, children, guests, and anyone who wants phone-free entry without facial recognition.
The Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Wi-Fi uses a fingerprint reader, keypad, Yale Access app, virtual keys, voice assistants, and auto-unlock. The keyed Wi-Fi model reference is YRD420-F-WF1-BSP, and the listed price is $299.99. Yale says up to 20 fingerprints can be registered and that fingerprint data is stored locally at the lock using AES-128 encryption.
The lock is listed as ANSI/BHMA Grade 2. Its exterior is rated IPX5, with an operating range of approximately −22°F to 140°F. Door compatibility includes 1⅜- to 2¼-inch door thickness, a 2⅜- or 2¾-inch backset, and standard bore dimensions. Wi-Fi-enabled models now support 5-GHz networks when the module has firmware 1.0.32 or later and the Yale Access app is version 24.25.0 or later.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The trade-off is battery consumption. Yale’s support documentation lists Wi-Fi battery life of up to three months under typical conditions for Assure Lock 2 Wi-Fi models. That is materially more maintenance than a low-power Bluetooth or Thread configuration. Make battery changes part of a regular home-maintenance schedule, especially on a frequently used side or garage-entry door.
Wet, dirty, injured, or heavily worn fingers can also reduce biometric reliability. The Touch model should not be confused with the Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus, which is the Yale model marketed around Apple Home Key.
- Choose it if: several people need reliable phone-free entry and you prefer fingerprints to faces or palm-vein scanning.
- Skip it if: you cannot tolerate three-month battery maintenance or your door has unusual preparation.
- Setup note: Yale’s current Wi-Fi path is Yale Access app → associated Home → gear icon → Lock Settings → associated device → Utilities → Connect to Wi-Fi Network. Keep the phone near the lock during setup.
4. eufy FamiLock S3 Max: best all-in-one video lock
Best for: homeowners who want to combine a deadbolt, video doorbell, camera, palm-vein reader, and indoor display.
Rank #2

The eufy FamiLock S3 Max is not a discreet lock. It combines a smart deadbolt, keypad, palm-vein reader, 2K HDR camera, video doorbell, and 4-inch interior video screen. Eufy lists a 150-degree wide-angle camera, dual power, and approximately five months of battery operation. The lock is listed as ANSI/BHMA Grade 1 and costs $399.99 in the U.S.
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIt supports Matter, Apple Home, Alexa, and Google Home at the platform level. That does not mean every feature appears in each platform. Eufy explicitly warns that camera streams are not supported through Matter, and the eufy app remains necessary for the full feature set. Matter may provide basic lock control while leaving the camera, doorbell events, palm-vein management, display, and proprietary activity functions inside eufy’s ecosystem. HomeBase 3 is supported; HomeBase 2 is not.
Independent reviews found the palm-vein reader reasonably accurate but not immediately as compelling as a conventional fingerprint sensor, and found that Matter exposes only a limited subset of the product’s features. The large exterior assembly can also be visually busy, and a storm door may interfere with the camera or its field of view. Review the manufacturer’s entry-configuration guidance before purchasing.
- Choose it if: you need a door camera and indoor screen as much as you need a lock.
- Skip it if: you want a small conventional deadbolt, complete Apple Home camera integration, or a simple garage side-door installation.
- Privacy note: determine where video is stored and whether cloud features such as thumbnail previews are enabled. Matter support does not eliminate eufy account and app dependence.
5. Lockly Visage Zeno Series: best facial-recognition lock
Best for: households that want face unlocking alongside fingerprints, PINs, Apple Home Key, app control, and physical keys.
The Lockly Visage Zeno Series offers one of the broadest access menus in this group: facial recognition, fingerprint recognition, PIN Genie keypad codes, Apple Home Key, Lockly Home app control, Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant, physical keys, and USB-C backup power. Lockly advertises fingerprint recognition in 0.2 seconds and capacity for up to 99 fingerprints. Two rechargeable batteries are listed for up to eight months of battery life, and built-in 2.4-GHz Wi-Fi eliminates the need for a separate Wi-Fi hub.
The app supports scheduled, one-time, recurring, and revocable access. Lockly says facial-recognition data is encrypted and stored on the lock rather than sent to its servers. That is a manufacturer privacy claim, not an independent guarantee; delete all biometric users before selling, returning, or transferring the lock. Lockly lists a five-year mechanical-and-finish warranty and a two-year electronics warranty.
Facial recognition is convenient but not universally convenient. Hats, masks, lighting, camera angle, and changes in appearance can affect recognition. TechRadar reported that installation cabling was frustrating during testing. Verify the exact model and hardware revision when buying from a third-party retailer.
- Choose it if: your household wants several non-key access methods and accepts prominent exterior electronics.
- Skip it if: you are privacy-sensitive about facial biometrics or want the simplest possible installation.
- Backup note: use a keypad, fingerprint, or physical key as the primary fallback rather than assuming face recognition will work in every condition.
6. Yale Approach Lock with Wi-Fi + Keypad Touch: best retrofit and renter option
Best for: renters and homeowners who want smart operation on the inside while retaining the existing exterior deadbolt and keys.
The Yale Approach installs on the interior of the door and turns the existing compatible deadbolt from inside. The bundle with Wi-Fi and Keypad Touch is listed at $179.99 when available. The keypad adds fingerprint access and custom entry codes, while the existing physical key remains a backup because the exterior deadbolt hardware is preserved.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →This is a genuine retrofit, but it is not universal. Yale says it works with most compatible single-cylinder deadbolts. It does not work with mortise locks, double-cylinder deadbolts, or certain specialty cylinders. The interior lock is not weatherproof and has a stated operating temperature of 32°F to 104°F, so it should not be installed on the exposed side of a door. Yale lists approximately 12 months of battery life depending on use, but availability on the official page was changing when the price was checked.
Retrofitting does not fix mechanical problems. A stiff bolt, tight strike, or door that must be pulled upward to lock can make the Approach motor bind. Yale specifically warns that over-tightening the mounting screws can jam the motor. If the lock binds, Yale’s documented recovery path is to remove the lock from the mounting plate, loosen the mounting-plate screws by half a turn, verify the correct adapter, and recalibrate through Yale Access → gear icon → lock → Calibrate Lock.

- 6 Ways to Unlock: Unlock with a touch for less than 1s with fingerprint lock. You can also open your front door lock via the eufy Security app, using the keypad or physical key, from Apple Watch, or use your voice with Alexa/Google Voice Assistant.
- 8 Months Battery Life: With 8 AA batteries, Smart Lock C220 runs around 8 months. Experience ultimate convenience and peace of mind with our long-lasting power solution. *May vary depending on the frequency of the lock being used.
- Self-learning AI: Fingerprint door lock recognition gets more precise with every touch, so you don't have to try agian and again to get in. Never be awkward or upset at unlocking the door.
- Control from Anywhere with Built-in Wi-Fi: No bridge required, you can control your wifi smart lock from anywhere via the eufy Security app. Easy setup.
- Integrated eufy ecosystem: If you have a eufy doorbell, you can add your wifi door lock to your routines and control devices together for keyless entry within the eufy Security app.
- Choose it if: preserving the existing outside lock and keys is more important than replacing the whole deadbolt.
- Skip it if: your door has a mortise, double-cylinder, lever-only, or specialty deadbolt.
- Installation note: test the original key and bolt with the door open before and after installing the interior motor.
7. Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever: best for side doors and garage-entry doors
Best for: a pedestrian garage-entry door, side door, office, guest suite, or interior entry that uses a lever or knob rather than a separate deadbolt.
The Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever is a lever replacement, not a deadbolt. Schlage positions it for garage doors, side doors, and interior doors. It includes built-in Wi-Fi, remote control through the Schlage Home app, unique access codes, and activity history. Schlage says it supports up to 100 permanent, recurring, and temporary codes. Official pricing starts at $309.
This makes it practical for contractors, cleaners, dog walkers, tenants, or family members who need scheduled access through a side entry. But a lever latch generally should not be the only lock protecting a highly exposed front door when that opening was designed for a deadbolt or requires one for insurance or security reasons. Confirm whether the exact SKU includes a mechanical key; keyed and keyless configurations can differ.
- Choose it if: the existing door has the correct lever/latch preparation and you need flexible codes.
- Skip it if: you are replacing a front-door deadbolt or need the security of a separate deadbolt.
- Garage note: concrete, metal, insulation, appliances, and detached structures can weaken Wi-Fi. Test the signal at the actual door before installation.
First, identify which garage door you mean
How to choose a smart lock that fits the door
Deadbolt replacement versus lever replacement
A deadbolt replacement removes and replaces the existing deadbolt mechanism. Level Lock Pro, Schlage Sense Pro, Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, eufy FamiLock S3 Max, and Lockly Visage belong primarily in this category. A lever replacement replaces a latch-and-lever assembly. The Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever is designed for that second situation.
Do not buy a lever because it has more app features than a deadbolt if the door is an exposed exterior entry. The lock must match the door’s mechanical security design, not merely its electronics.
Measure before ordering
Measure the hardware and inspect the frame before buying:
- Door thickness
- Backset, commonly 2⅜ or 2¾ inches on the featured deadbolts
- Bore-hole diameter and the number of holes
- Single-cylinder versus double-cylinder deadbolt
- Deadbolt versus mortise lock
- Lever/latch preparation versus deadbolt preparation
- Door handing where the product requires it
- Storm-door clearance and the space available for exterior cameras or keypads
- Door-frame and strike alignment
- Whether the exterior hardware and interior motor are rated for the weather at that location
Yale’s compatibility guide is useful because it distinguishes one-hole lever doors, two-hole deadbolt doors, mortise-prepped doors, and interconnected locksets. Yale Approach has a separate retrofit compatibility list.
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Thread, and Matter are different
- Bluetooth: local phone-to-lock communication. It can work without home Internet when you are near the lock, but remote access generally needs a bridge or another connected hub.
- Wi-Fi: direct Internet connectivity and convenient remote access, usually with higher battery consumption.
- Thread: a low-power mesh network. Matter-over-Thread control normally requires a Thread Border Router or compatible ecosystem hub.
- Matter: an interoperability standard, not a promise that every lock feature works in every smart-home app.
- Apple Home Key: an Apple Wallet credential for tap-based entry. It is not identical to ordinary Apple Home compatibility.
- Ultra Wideband: precise device-distance and approach information on supported phones and watches. It is not the same as geofencing.
For example, the eufy FamiLock S3 Max supports Matter, but eufy says camera streams are not supported through Matter. Fingerprint or palm-vein enrollment, facial-recognition settings, proprietary activity feeds, and video-doorbell events may remain available only in the manufacturer’s app.
Recommended Free Tools
Choose the access method your household will actually use
- Keypad: the most broadly useful phone-free method for families, guests, contractors, and cleaners. Codes can be temporary, recurring, or permanent when the model supports those types.
- Fingerprint: fast and convenient for residents, but wet, dirty, injured, or worn fingers can reduce reliability.
- Facial recognition: useful for hands-free entry, but affected by masks, hats, lighting, camera angle, and privacy preferences.
- Palm-vein recognition: contactless and distinctive, but it adds another proprietary reader and ecosystem dependency.
- Apple Home Key: excellent for supported Apple households, but not a universal Android access method.
- Physical key: still the simplest recovery method when the product includes a keyway. Keyless models need a tested external-power or keypad plan.
Security ratings do not replace good door construction
Smart features do not compensate for a weak strike plate, short screws, a hollow or poorly fitted door, a loose jamb, exposed glass beside the lock, or a deadbolt that does not fully enter the frame. Before installing electronics, make sure the bolt moves freely with the door open and that the strike is correctly aligned with the frame.
Rank #4
- ANYWHERE ACCESS: With built-in WiFi compatibility, you can easily and securely connect your Schlage Encode Deadbolt to your home WiFi network to control and monitor your home from anywhere with the Schlage Home app
- PEACE OF MIND: Lock and unlock from anywhere, manage up to 100 access codes for keyless entry, view lock history, receive customizable notifications and easily manage multiple locks at once - all when paired to the Schlage Home app and connected to a secure WiFi network
- VOICE CONTROL: Works with Alexa and Google Home for optional, hands-free convenience when paired with the Schlage Home app and a voice enabled device
- ADVANCED SECURITY: Secure, encrypted connection; built-in, customizable alarm for door movement and forced entry attempts; fingerprint-resistant touchscreen; certified highest residential Security, Durability and Finish rating by BHMA industry experts
- EASY INSTALL: Install in minutes with just a screwdriver, no hardwiring required; Snap ‘n Stay design helps keep the lock on the door so both hands are free; fits standard doors with 1-3/8 in to 1-3/4 in door thickness and 2-3/8 in or 2-3/4 in backset
Ratings also require careful interpretation. BHMA residential ratings use three categories—Security, Durability, and Finish—with grades A, B, or C. AAA means A in all three categories. ANSI/BHMA commercial ratings use numeric grades such as Grade 1 and Grade 2. A product can carry both systems, but the labels are not one simple universal ranking. Schlage explains the distinction in its BHMA and lock-grade guide.
Among these picks, Level lists BHMA Certified AAA and ANSI/BHMA Grade 1/A information; eufy lists ANSI/BHMA Grade 1; Yale lists ANSI/BHMA Grade 2; and Schlage lists the Sense Pro as residential Grade BAA and commercial Grade 2. The dossier does not establish equivalent ratings for every Lockly, Yale Approach, or Encode Lever configuration, so do not assume that the absence of a listed rating means the products are identical or inferior.
ANSI/BHMA standards test hardware under defined conditions. The ANSI/BHMA A156.40-2025 standard and manufacturer guidance cannot predict every real-world result. Installation quality, frame construction, maintenance, climate, and door alignment still matter.
Battery, network, and lockout planning
Never make phone access your only backup. Before depending on a smart lock, test the keypad, physical key, Bluetooth operation, or emergency-power port while the door is open. Keep the required battery type available and make sure household members know how to use the fallback.
| Product | Failure-recovery plan |
|---|---|
| Level Lock Pro | Physical keys and Level fobs; add the optional keypad if phone-free exterior entry is needed. |
| Schlage Sense Pro | Keypad and USB-C jump-start; local or Bluetooth behavior can vary by outage condition and setup. |
| Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch | Fingerprint, keypad, Bluetooth, and physical key on the keyed model. |
| eufy FamiLock S3 Max | Keypad, physical key, and the listed backup AAA supply. |
| Lockly Visage | Keypad, fingerprint, physical key, and USB-C backup. |
| Yale Approach | Existing physical key, app/Bluetooth, and Keypad Touch if the bundle is installed. |
| Schlage Encode Lever | Keypad, app/Bluetooth behavior, and a mechanical key on applicable keyed models. |
Remote control normally disappears when a Wi-Fi-connected lock loses Internet access. Local Bluetooth may continue to work when you are nearby, and keypad credentials often remain available because they are stored locally, but neither behavior should be assumed for every product or outage. Matter control depends on the local hub and the lock’s current network state.
Auto-lock is not always door-position awareness
An auto-lock timer can lock the bolt after a period of time, but it does not necessarily prove that the door is fully closed. A system may report the last command sent, the bolt position, the door position, or both. Prefer a product with documented door-position sensing if you want reliable lock-status notifications.
Level Lock Pro explicitly advertises integrated door-open/door-closed detection. Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch advertises DoorSense auto-lock behavior. Confirm in the exact model’s documentation whether the status refers to the door, the bolt, or merely the app command.
Installation sequence for a reliable smart lock
This is the practical order for a homeowner or construction professional preparing a door:
- Identify the hardware: record deadbolt, mortise, lever, interconnected, single-cylinder, or double-cylinder construction.
- Measure the door: check thickness, backset, bore, handing, trim, storm-door clearance, and frame preparation.
- Correct the mechanical problem first: with the door open, the bolt should extend and retract smoothly using the thumbturn or key. Fix binding, strike misalignment, loose screws, and sagging hinges before adding a motor.
- Install without over-tightening: smart-lock motors are sensitive to mounting pressure. Follow the manufacturer’s sequence.
- Test the key or thumbturn before adding batteries: verify that the original mechanical operation still works where applicable.
- Install the app and update firmware: complete updates before creating guest codes or connecting the lock to a smart-home platform.
- Calibrate handing and position: let the lock learn the correct locked and unlocked positions.
- Create the owner account first: then issue temporary, recurring, or permanent credentials according to the household’s needs.
- Add a non-phone backup: keypad code, physical key, fingerprint, fob, or external-power procedure.
- Test failure conditions: disable Wi-Fi, test local access, simulate a low-battery procedure, and confirm that the door still closes and locks correctly.
Level’s installation guidance follows the same basic sequence: verify deadbolt fit, remove the old lock and strike, install the bolt and motor, attach the housings, insert the battery, and test in the app.
Privacy and biometric considerations
Biometrics are convenient, but they deserve more scrutiny than an ordinary keypad. Before buying a fingerprint, face, or palm reader, check:
- Where the biometric template is stored.
- Whether it leaves the lock, hub, or phone.
- Whether the manufacturer encrypts it and what that claim covers.
- Whether video is stored locally, in a hub, on the phone, or in the cloud.
- Whether push notifications and thumbnail previews require cloud processing.
- Whether all biometric users can be deleted before the lock is sold, returned, or transferred.
- Whether advanced features require an account or subscription even when local lock control does not.
Lockly says Visage facial data is encrypted and stored on the lock rather than sent to its servers. Eufy provides local-storage options for some video products but also describes cloud-dependent features such as thumbnail previews. Treat those as manufacturer disclosures, not independent security certifications, and review the current privacy policy before enrolling biometric data.
Best Value
- Passcode Entry: This keypad lock offers 20 access codes for family use and a temporary code for single-use guest entry
- One-Time Code: A one-time PIN code can be set for door opening and will automatically be deleted after use
- Smart Locking: Features an automatic door lock that can be set to lock in 10-99 seconds (off by default) and one-touch auto-lock by pressing and holding any key on the keypad for 2 seconds
- Long Battery Life & Low Battery Indicator: Powered by 4 AA batteries (not included), lasts up to 365 days. A red light indicator alerts you when battery level drops below 15%
- Security Deadbolt: Provides reliable home protection with its sturdy aluminum alloy construction, weather resistance (IP54), durability, anti-peeping user code protection, low battery indicator, and solid lock cylinder
Serious alternative: Aqara Smart Lock U400
The Aqara U400 is an important 2026 alternative, particularly for mixed-device homes. Aqara announced it at CES on January 6, 2026. It supports UWB hands-free unlocking, Apple Home Key, Samsung Wallet Digital Home Key, fingerprint access, keypad codes, NFC cards, physical keys, Matter over Thread, and Aliro readiness. Aqara lists capacity for up to 50 fingerprints, IP65 protection, and a rechargeable battery rated for up to six months.
Apple UWB unlocking requires supported iPhone or Apple Watch hardware, iOS 18.5 or later, watchOS 11.5 or later, and a Thread-enabled Apple home hub. The U400 is not in the main seven because its feature set and ecosystem requirements overlap with the Level Lock Pro and Schlage Sense Pro while adding particular appeal for Aqara, Samsung, Android, Matter, and mixed-platform households.
Other alternatives worth considering
- Yale Assure Lock 2 Plus: consider it if Apple Home Key is the main requirement but you do not want to choose the Schlage Sense Pro. Do not confuse it with the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, whose defining feature is fingerprint access.
- eufy E330: a video-lock alternative, but verify current model-specific compatibility. Manufacturer documentation should control: older comparison coverage has listed HomeKit or Matter support that eufy’s own E330 FAQ did not confirm.
- Separate lock and video doorbell: often the more repairable and flexible arrangement. A conventional high-quality deadbolt plus a dedicated video doorbell avoids replacing the entire lock when one camera, battery, or biometric reader fails.
Which lock should you buy?
- Buy the Level Lock Pro if you want the best balance of understated design, Apple Home Key, Thread-based smart-home support, physical keys, and door-position information.
- Buy the Schlage Sense Pro if you have supported Apple hardware and specifically want premium UWB hands-free unlocking, a large code capacity, built-in Wi-Fi, and USB-C emergency power.
- Buy the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch if fingerprints are the most useful access method for your family and you accept the Wi-Fi model’s shorter battery interval.
- Buy the eufy FamiLock S3 Max if you want one prominent device to serve as a lock, camera, doorbell, palm reader, and indoor screen—and you are comfortable using the eufy ecosystem for advanced features.
- Buy the Lockly Visage if you want facial recognition plus fingerprint, PIN, Apple Home Key, app, and physical-key options, and you accept the privacy and installation trade-offs.
- Buy the Yale Approach if you need an interior retrofit, want to keep the existing exterior hardware and keys, and have a compatible single-cylinder deadbolt.
- Buy the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever if the garage or side entry uses a lever or latch rather than a deadbolt.
- Buy a smart garage-door opener or controller instead if you mean the large overhead door used by vehicles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a smart lock still work if the Wi-Fi goes out?
Often, but not every feature will. A keypad credential may continue to work locally, and Bluetooth may work when you are near the lock. Remote app control normally stops without Internet access. Matter control depends on the local Thread or smart-home hub. Test the exact lock with Wi-Fi disabled before relying on it.
Can I install one of these on a garage door?
If you mean a pedestrian garage-entry door, yes, provided the lock matches the door hardware. Use a deadbolt model for a deadbolt door or the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever for a suitable lever/latch door. If you mean the overhead vehicle door, use a compatible smart garage-door opener or controller instead of a smart lock.

The Yale Approach is specifically designed as an interior retrofit for compatible single-cylinder deadbolts and preserves the existing exterior hardware and keys. It is not compatible with every deadbolt, and it does not fit mortise or double-cylinder locks.
Is fingerprint or facial recognition more secure than a keypad?
It is more convenient for some households, but the dossier does not establish that one access method is universally more secure. Biometrics create privacy, enrollment, and recognition concerns; keypads create code-sharing and observation concerns. Use unique codes, limit permissions, keep a physical or external-power backup, and review how biometric data is stored.
Does Matter provide full control of a video smart lock?
No. Matter commonly provides basic lock control, but it does not guarantee camera streams, video-doorbell events, biometric enrollment, proprietary activity feeds, or every manufacturer automation. The eufy FamiLock S3 Max is an explicit example: eufy says its camera streams are not supported through Matter.
What should I do if the smart lock motor binds?
First check the mechanical door. With the door open, the bolt should move freely. Inspect strike alignment, hinges, adapters, and mounting pressure. For Yale Approach specifically, Yale identifies over-tightened mounting screws and incorrect adapters as possible causes; its recovery path includes loosening the mounting-plate screws by half a turn and using Yale Access → gear icon → lock → Calibrate Lock.
The Bottom Line
The right smart lock is determined first by the door, then by the access method and smart-home platform. For a conventional front-door deadbolt, start with the Level Lock Pro, Schlage Sense Pro, Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch, eufy FamiLock S3 Max, or Lockly Visage. For a compatible deadbolt that must retain its exterior hardware, choose the Yale Approach. For a lever-style garage-entry or side door, choose the Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Lever. For the overhead vehicle door, install a compatible smart garage-door opener or controller instead.
Whichever product you choose, strengthen and align the door first, confirm the exact hardware fit, and test a non-phone backup before making the lock part of your daily security routine.
