Christmas ribbon can act as a tree’s garland, add a few sculptural bows, or tie a whole room’s decorations together. These 60 ideas cover trees, wreaths, garlands, gifts, and table accents, with practical tips for choosing ribbon and attaching it neatly.

How to choose Christmas ribbon

Start with the surface you’re decorating and the effect you want: a flowing line, a shaped loop, or a small accent. Compare these details before you cut or tie anything:

  • Width and scale: Broad ribbon reads clearly across a full tree or large wreath; narrower ribbon suits small ornaments, mini wreaths, and gift details.
  • Material and stiffness: Wired ribbon is easier to shape into defined loops and bows. Mesh or textured ribbon may catch on branches more readily than smooth ribbon. Burlap can suit a rustic look, while wired satin can create a more formal finish. These are styling options, not fixed rules. The Home Depot’s tree-decorating guide discusses these approaches.
  • Color and pattern: Repeat a ribbon color from the ornaments or room, or use one contrasting color as a deliberate accent. A solid ribbon paired with a pattern can add variety without introducing many competing colors.
  • Placement: Decide whether ribbon should travel continuously around or down the tree, sit in separate swags, or appear as individual bows.
  • Attachment surface: Branches can hold tucked ribbon or tied bows; a wreath or garland may need a separate tie to secure a bow. Floral wire and plant ties are useful aids, not requirements for every decoration.

For a tree, The Home Depot recommends keeping the selection to one to three ribbon types as a practical styling guide. Adjust that to the size and density of your tree.

Christmas tree ribbon ideas

Ribbon on a tree can work as a continuous line or as separate accents. Michaels’ beginner tutorial demonstrates wired ribbon in place of traditional garland, as well as individual hand-tied bows.

Spirals, swags, and cascades

  1. Rising spiral: Wrap one broad ribbon around the tree in a rising spiral, starting low and working toward the top.
  2. Even horizontal swags: Drape ribbon in separate, evenly spaced swags around the tree.
  3. Vertical cascade: Let several lengths fall vertically from a large bow at the top.
  4. Two-ribbon spiral: Alternate two complementary ribbons as you make a spiral.
  5. Textured garland: Use a single textured ribbon as the tree’s continuous garland.
  6. Branch billows: Tuck short, loose lengths into selected gaps for soft volume.
  7. Branch-tip bows: Tie small bows at the ends of outer branches.
  8. Bow columns: Place bows in loose vertical columns for a more structured layout.
  9. Plaid statement: Use plaid ribbon to bring a traditional or cabin-inspired note to the tree.
  10. Rustic pairing: Combine burlap ribbon with natural-looking ornaments.
  11. Formal loops: Use wired satin ribbon for crisp, shaped loops.
  12. Branch-catching mesh: Choose mesh ribbon when you want it to catch more readily on branches.
  13. Narrow vertical accents: Run narrow ribbon vertically between larger ornaments.
  14. Long topper tails: Let long tails cascade beneath a simple bow topper.
  15. Weaving effect: Tuck ribbon behind ornaments so it appears to pass through the branches.
  16. Fill a sparse spot: Use a wider ribbon to cover a sparse area, then balance its visual weight elsewhere.
  17. Oversized bow topper: Make one large bow with long tails to top the tree.
  18. Repeated bow shape: Repeat one bow style in several sizes throughout the branches.
  19. Velvet accent: Use velvet for a soft, rich-looking detail.
  20. Sheer and light: Pair sheer organza with small lights for a lighter visual effect.
  21. Alternating sections: Combine a solid ribbon and a patterned ribbon in alternating sections.
  22. Low-profile knots: Tie small knots around branches instead of adding full bows.
  23. Ribbon ornament loops: Hang small ornaments from short ribbon loops.
  24. Echo the room: Choose ribbon tails in colors already used in the room.
  25. Accent stripe: Let one contrasting ribbon form a deliberate stripe through the tree.

Making and attaching bows

To make a simple bow, form loops, twist the center to hold their shape, and arrange the tails. Lowe’s tree-ribbon guide describes this approach and shows plant ties used to attach finished bows to branches. For a bow-making guide, the National Design Academy lists ribbon and scissors as basic supplies and identifies floral wire or a chenille stem as ways to secure a bow; it notes that wired ribbon is easiest to shape.

Use a plant tie or floral wire when you need extra hold, especially for a separate bow on a branch, wreath, or garland. They are optional: tucked ribbon, knots, and ribbon tied directly around suitable surfaces may not need them. Lowe’s also suggests repeating a consistent spacing pattern for ribbon lengths, or using shorter lengths for a more varied arrangement.
