A broken TV may be repairable, reusable, or recyclable—but the right choice depends on its fault, age, and condition. Start with simple checks, then compare a qualified repair estimate with replacement cost. If it cannot reasonably be used again, find a local electronics recycling route rather than putting it in household trash.
1. Check for a simple cause, then get a repair assessment
Before assuming the television has failed, check the power connection, remote batteries, input selection, and any connected devices. If the problem persists, ask a qualified repairer to diagnose it before buying parts or deciding the set is beyond repair.
Compare the estimate with the TV’s age, condition, and replacement cost. Some faults may be relatively minor: UK Environment Agency guidance gives a replacement TV soundcard as an example, while noting that specialist equipment, knowledge, or qualifications may still be needed. The Basel Convention’s technical guidance likewise says repairing used or waste TV screens and audio/video equipment requires a high level of skill and training.
Internal repairs are not a casual DIY job. A repairer can assess the fault and whether the work is safe and worthwhile.

2. Donate or give it away if it still works
If the TV is usable, contact a charity, reuse organization, or potential recipient before transporting it. Confirm that they accept that type and condition of television, and include necessary accessories such as the power cord or remote when available.
Describe any known fault plainly. Do not offer a nonworking TV as functional. The US Federal Trade Commission recommends donating electronics that can still be used, while UK guidance notes that reuse depends on factors such as the repairs needed, whether repairs will actually happen, and whether there is a market for the item.
3. Sell it honestly for repair or parts
A buyer may want a faulty television for repair or parts, but there is no established general market or standard price for broken TVs. Treat a sale as an option only if you find a suitable buyer.
- List the exact symptoms and whether the TV powers on.
- State clearly that it is faulty and being sold for repair or parts.
- Include the model information and any accessories you have.
4. Ask whether a repairer can reuse parts
A qualified repairer may be able to reuse components, but do not casually remove circuit boards or other parts yourself. TV repair calls for training and care around hazardous components and safety risks. Basel Convention guidance also says replacement components should not impair the product’s safety.

5. Find an appropriate local electronics recycling route
If repair, donation, or a suitable parts buyer is not practical, check collection options with your municipality or local solid-waste office, the TV’s manufacturer, a retailer, or a local electronics recycler. Ask the provider whether it accepts your TV type and condition, and confirm any fee, pickup arrangement, or drop-off requirements.
Rules and services vary by location. The US Environmental Protection Agency notes that some states have specific electronics laws and points consumers toward certified electronics recyclers. Texas’s program can help identify options and manufacturer pages, but it does not itself provide recycling service. Follow the instructions of the provider serving your area.

Do not put electronics in household trash when a suitable recycling route is available. The FTC warns that many electronics contain hazardous materials that should not go into landfills. The EPA says older CRT televisions and monitors contain an average of four pounds of lead and may need special handling; that figure refers to older CRT devices, not every modern flat-panel TV.

A screen or enclosure might suggest a creative reuse project, but that does not make improvised electrical reuse safe or practical. The official guidance cited here supports reuse and recycling as broad pathways; it does not validate a particular DIY conversion. Avoid dismantling the TV, especially an older CRT set, unless qualified to handle its components. If a safe, useful reuse is not realistic, use an appropriate e-waste route.
