For itchy skin, a cool, damp cloth, a warm colloidal oatmeal bath, and fragrance-free moisturizer are better-supported first steps than reaching for a garden plant. Some plants are being studied for itch, but the evidence does not establish six plants as proven treatments. Use plant-based products cautiously, and seek medical advice if itch is severe, persistent, or accompanied by skin changes.
Start with safer, better-supported itch relief
Itch is a symptom, not a diagnosis. Causes can include eczema, shingles, hives, psoriasis, bug bites, scabies, and ringworm, among others. A plant preparation may soothe a sensation without treating its cause.
The American Academy of Dermatology recommends practical measures such as a cool, damp washcloth for about 5–10 minutes, a warm colloidal oatmeal bath, and fragrance-free moisturizer applied while skin is damp or whenever it itches. Loose-fitting cotton clothing and avoiding extreme temperature changes may also help. These steps aim to ease symptoms; they are not a cure for an underlying condition. ( American Academy of Dermatology; AAD guidance on itchy eczema )
As AAD dermatologist Susan Massick, MD, FAAD, put it, “Our first instinct is to scratch that pesky itch, but in reality, that could be making things worse by irritating your skin further,” (AAD, September 24, 2024).

What six plants can—and cannot—do
A 2024 review discusses several medicinal plants in relation to pruritus, including the six below. It describes promising findings and possible mechanisms, but calls for further clinical trials and better standardization of doses and formulations. That is not the same as proof that a home-grown plant or homemade preparation relieves itch. The review is in a palliative-care context, so its findings should not be treated as a consumer treatment guideline. (2024 review of medicinal plants and pruritus)
| Plant | What the cited evidence supports for itch | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Aloe vera | Not established as a universal itch treatment. NCCIH describes some studied topical uses but does not establish general itch relief. | Topical use can occasionally cause burning, itching, rash, or eczema. Gel, latex, and whole-leaf preparations are not interchangeable. |
| Chamomile | Clinical usefulness for specific conditions, including itch, is not established by sufficient reliable evidence. | Allergy is possible, especially for people allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies. Avoid the eyes. |
| Lavender | The cited source does not establish lavender as an itch treatment. | Topical products may cause allergic skin reactions. Do not apply undiluted essential oil as a remedy. |
| Calendula | The 2024 review discusses it, but does not establish a standardized home preparation as a proven itch treatment. | Findings in a review do not guarantee that a garden infusion or cream will work or be non-irritating. |
| Turmeric | The review describes possible mechanisms and findings, but further trials are needed to establish clinical use for itch. | Do not treat proposed mechanisms or preliminary findings as proof of benefit from a homemade topical preparation. |
| Licorice | The review discusses licorice in relation to pruritus; reliable evidence for a specific home-use itch treatment is not established. | Preparation and dose matter, and the review notes a need for better standardization. |
Aloe vera
NIEHS identifies the species Aloe vera as Aloe barbadensis Miller and notes traditional use of the clear gel on skin. NCCIH distinguishes inner-leaf gel from latex and whole-leaf preparations. This distinction matters: evidence or safety information about one preparation should not be assumed to apply to another, especially oral products. Occasional topical burning, itching, rash, and eczema have been reported. (NCCIH: Aloe vera; NIEHS: Aloe vera)

Chamomile
NCCIH says, “Studies of the effectiveness of chamomile for a variety of specific conditions have not produced sufficient reliable evidence to rate clinical usefulness.” Short-term topical medicinal use is described as possibly safe, but that does not make chamomile risk-free or prove it will relieve itch. People allergic to related plants—including ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds, or daisies—may be more likely to react. (NCCIH: Chamomile)
Lavender
The cited NCCIH information warns that topical lavender products may cause allergic skin reactions; it does not establish lavender as an itch treatment. A “natural” label does not rule out irritation or allergy. (NCCIH: Lavender)

Calendula, turmeric, and licorice
The review’s discussion of calendula, turmeric, and licorice includes proposed mechanisms and promising preclinical or clinical findings, but it does not establish that garden-grown plants, infusions, or other homemade preparations reliably treat itch. Standardized products and further trials are needed before such findings can support confident treatment claims.
How to try a topical plant product more cautiously
If you choose to use a topical product, treat it as an optional experiment for mild symptoms—not a substitute for diagnosis or established care. Avoid applying it to broken skin, near the eyes, or over a large area. Use a product as labeled, and stop if burning, rash, swelling, or worsening itch develops. Be especially cautious with chamomile if you have allergies to related plants and with lavender because topical allergic reactions are possible.

Do not assume a homemade preparation has the same ingredients, concentration, or safety profile as a studied product. A plant’s traditional use or a proposed biological mechanism is not proof that it will relieve your particular itch.

Contact a dermatologist or other health professional if self-care does not bring relief, or if the skin develops redness, swelling, a rash, bumps, or sores.
