6 Smart Ideas for Using Shade in Your Landscape

Use shade as a landscape asset with layered planting, site-matched groundcovers and thoughtful planning around existing trees, wildlife and buildings.

A shady yard can be a useful, layered garden—not just a patch of lawn that refuses to grow. Start by matching plants to the light and moisture you actually have, then combine canopy, understory plants and groundcover. The species below are examples from Oregon State University Extension guidance, not a universal planting list; gardeners elsewhere should check local extension advice for plants suited to their climate.

1. Build a layered woodland garden

Think vertically: a small understory tree or shrub provides the upper layer, ferns and flowering perennials fill the middle, and low plants cover the soil. This approach makes shade feel intentional while giving plants different roles and heights.

For an Oregon example, OSU Extension suggests a shady woodland combination of vine maple and osoberry above sword ferns, goatsbeard, fringecup, Pacific bleeding heart, trillium and alumroot, with native violets or wood sorrel as groundcover. Use the combination as a design model, not a recipe: check each plant’s light, moisture and regional needs before planting. OSU Extension’s pollinator landscape guide also organizes plant choices by plant type, light, moisture and wildlife associations.

2. Use groundcovers suited to shade

Bare soil beneath trees can make a garden look unfinished, but a groundcover needs conditions it can tolerate. OSU Extension’s regional woodland example includes native violets and wood sorrel. In another region, ask a local extension service or native-plant organization for suitable low-growing species rather than assuming these Oregon examples will thrive everywhere.

3. Plant beneath existing trees with care

Before digging, assess how much light reaches the planting area and whether the soil is dry or consistently moist. Sun-loving plants placed in shade may struggle, and established tree and shrub roots can compete with new plants for water. Those roots can also make planting holes difficult to dig. OSU Extension’s planting guidance emphasizes matching plants to site conditions.

Plan for mature size as well as the size of the plant at purchase. Large shrubs and trees need room for their eventual roots and branches; crowding them against a building, path or one another can undermine the layout as they grow. OSU Extension’s Oregon Garden Guide advises allowing large shrubs and trees enough space to reach full size.

4. Make shade planting support wildlife

A shaded bed can contribute to habitat when its plants suit the site and provide useful resources for local wildlife. OSU Extension’s pollinator guide lists plants alongside light and moisture conditions and wildlife associations, which helps gardeners consider habitat value as well as appearance. Its recommendations are regional, so verify that any species you choose is appropriate for your climate and site. Consult the guide’s plant tables when planning an Oregon landscape.

5. Coordinate shade with stormwater and buildings

Shade does not have to be planned as a standalone feature. A landscape can combine shade, wildlife habitat and stormwater management, with planting choices and site layout considered alongside nearby buildings. Think about where water moves across the property and how trees, paths and planted areas fit around the structure. OSU Extension’s sustainable landscape planning guide discusses coordinating these landscape functions with buildings.

6. Make a small shaded space feel deliberate

A compact urban garden can still use layers: choose a manageable shrub, add ferns or flowering plants, and finish with groundcover where conditions allow. OSU Extension’s small-garden guidance also considers plants between pavers. That idea can help soften a narrow path or courtyard, but only use plants there if the local light, moisture and growing space suit them. Containers can be another option where in-ground planting is impractical, provided the chosen plants’ needs can be met.

For any small-space plan, keep mature plant size and access in view. A layout that leaves room to walk, maintain the planting and reach nearby structures will remain more usable as plants grow.
