Cucumber leaves can turn yellow for several different reasons, so color alone is not a diagnosis. Look at the pattern, check both sides of the leaves, feel the soil around the roots, and consider recent weather before changing how you water or feed the plant. Those checks can help distinguish pests and disease from environmental stress.
Start by reading the symptoms
Before treating a cucumber, note whether the yellowing is uniform or speckled, whether it starts on older or newer leaves, and whether spots have angular edges bounded by veins. Look for webbing, visible insects, white growth, wilting, or distorted leaves. Inspect leaf undersides as well as the upper surfaces, then check moisture in the root zone.

Several problems can look alike. University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources advises considering the full symptom pattern rather than identifying a disease by yellow color alone (UC ANR: Cucurbits). If the plant is declining quickly or the signs do not point to a clear cause, send a local extension service photos of both leaf surfaces and the whole plant.

Six possible causes and what to do
1. Spider mites and other sap-feeding pests
Spider mite feeding often creates fine pale or yellow stippling, especially on the upper leaf surface. In heavier infestations, mites or delicate webbing may be visible underneath. Aphids and whiteflies can also feed on foliage and contribute to yellowing. Maryland Extension recommends using a hand lens to help inspect for small mites (Maryland Extension: Spider Mites on Vegetables).
#1 Best Overall
- BURPLESS AND LOW ACID – Smooth-skinned cucumbers with no bitterness, ideal for easy digestion, fresh eating, or quick-pickling snacks
- MULTI-STAGE HARVEST OPTIONS – Pick young at 4–6" for crisp baby cucumbers or let grow to 8–9" for traditional slicing use
- HIGH-YIELD VINES – Compact but vigorous plants offer abundant cucumbers with excellent texture and performance in containers or garden beds
- EASY TO GROW FROM SEED – Thrives in full sun with moderate water, producing reliably across USDA Zones 3–11 with 60 days to maturity
- FAMILY OWNED USA SEED COMPANY – Heirloom non-GMO seeds from a trusted American brand, always fresh, untreated, and quality tested for garden success
Check both leaf surfaces before deciding pests are responsible; stippling alone is not proof. If you find badly affected leaves, remove them where appropriate and keep an eye on new growth. Row covers can protect young plants from some insects, but remove them when flowers open if bees need access. Washington State University Extension discusses row-cover use and pollination considerations for cucurbits (WSU Extension: Cucurbit Pest Management).
2. Leaf diseases
Downy mildew may begin as pale green or yellow angular spots bounded by veins and later turn the affected tissue brown. Humid conditions can speed damage. Angular leafspot can also cause water-soaked angular lesions, sometimes with yellow halos. Because diseases overlap in appearance, a yellow or angular spot by itself cannot confirm which one is present. See the University of Minnesota Extension’s cucumber disease guidance (University of Minnesota Extension: Cucumber Pest Management) and Cornell’s cucurbit disease resources (Cornell Vegetable MD Online).

Remove clearly diseased leaves when appropriate, improve spacing and airflow, and avoid overhead watering where practical so splashing water is less likely to spread some diseases. If lesions are spreading or the diagnosis is uncertain, ask a local extension service to assess the whole pattern.
3. Too little water, too much water, or poor drainage
Both drought and waterlogged roots can stress cucumbers and cause wilting or yellowing. Check the root zone rather than relying only on the soil surface: it should be moist and pliable, not dry and crumbly or saturated and dripping. Correct an obvious moisture problem gradually, and check whether excess water can drain away. Oregon State University Extension and Washington State University Extension describe moisture and drainage as important growing conditions (Oregon State University Extension: Cucumbers; WSU Extension: Cucurbit Pest Management).

- The Straight Eight Cucumber receives its name by being best harvested when it reaches 8 inches long
- Use of this great slicing cucumber may result in jealous neighbors or friends and family arriving unannounced for dinner
4. Cold soil or cold, wet weather
Cold conditions can discolor leaves and cause wilting. Purdue Extension explains that low soil temperatures can cause yellow margins: roots take up water more slowly while leaves continue losing water (Purdue Extension: Cucumbers). Consider recent temperatures and the pattern of damage before attributing yellow leaves to cold; the symptom can have other causes.
5. Low fertility or nutrient imbalance
Stunted growth alongside pale leaves may point to low fertility, but yellowing alone is not enough evidence to apply fertilizer. Excess fertility can cause problems too. If the pattern persists, use soil or growing-medium information to guide any correction rather than guessing. Oregon State University Extension discusses cucumber growing conditions and fertility (Oregon State University Extension: Cucumbers).

6. Other insects, diseases, or plant-specific problems
Cucumber beetles can spread bacterial wilt, while whiteflies and other insects can feed on foliage. Viruses may cause mottling, distorted leaves, or stunting in addition to yellowing. If yellowing comes with rapid wilting or distorted growth, inspect for other signs and seek a local extension diagnosis rather than assuming a nutrient deficiency or applying a broad treatment. UC ANR, Maryland Extension, and Cornell describe these overlapping pest and disease concerns in their cucurbit resources (UC ANR: Cucurbits; Maryland Extension: Spider Mites on Vegetables; Cornell Vegetable MD Online).
Choose a response that fits the evidence
- Inspect: Note where yellowing begins and whether it is uniform, speckled, or bounded by veins. Look for webbing, insects, white growth, wilting, or distortion.
- Check conditions: Inspect the undersides of leaves and feel the root-zone soil. Consider recent cold or wet weather.
- Make a targeted correction: Address clearly dry or saturated soil, avoid wetting foliage where practical, and remove badly diseased or infested leaves when appropriate.
- Protect healthy growth: Improve spacing and airflow. Consider row covers for young plants if insect protection is needed, removing them at flowering when pollinators require access.
- Escalate uncertain or fast-moving cases: Contact a local extension service with photos of the whole plant and both sides of affected leaves.
Do not use fertilizer or broad pesticide application as a default response. Existing yellow tissue is not guaranteed to turn green again; focus on addressing the cause and protecting healthy new growth.
