Pulling weeds by hand is the best-supported starting point for weeds between patio pavers. A narrow hand tool can help with stubborn roots, while a torch or labeled herbicide may be options only when the paver system, site conditions, and product directions allow. No method here promises permanent control: seedlings can return, and treatments that burn leaves may leave roots alive.
Choose an approach that suits the pavers
Oregon State University Extension’s guidance for permeable pavers says weeds can be pulled by hand, treated with a torch, or managed through another integrated pest management approach. It does not rank those choices or establish that torching is safe for every paving material or setting. The six options below combine those supported approaches with practical follow-up and maintenance; they are not six independently tested treatments.
| Option | What it does | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Hand pulling | Removes accessible weeds, including roots when you can get them out intact. | Take care not to disturb sound joint infill. |
| Narrow hand weeder | Helps reach weeds in tight joints; a dandelion digger can help with deep taproots. | General extension guidance supports small tools for tight spaces, not a specific tool for every paver joint. |
| Repeat removal | Removes new growth as it appears. | Repeated removal can weaken perennial plants over time, but this is general weed-management guidance, not a guaranteed patio protocol. |
| Torch | Can injure or kill contacted foliage. | Use only if compatible with the paver system and allowed by local fire rules; follow the torch maker’s directions. |
| Labeled herbicide | May control weeds when used as directed by its label. | Take extra care around porous paving and stormwater facilities. |
| Joint maintenance | Restores infill where it has dropped below the paver surface. | Use the material specified for your paver system; refilling is maintenance, not a guarantee against weeds. |
1. Pull young weeds by hand
Start with weeds you can grasp and remove without shifting the surrounding pavers or joint material. Pull steadily, aiming to remove as much of the root as practical. Oregon State University Extension’s paver guidance specifically recommends hand pulling. The method is chemical-free, but it does not guarantee that every root comes out; check the joints again for regrowth.
2. Reach stubborn roots with a narrow hand tool
A slim hand weeder can help loosen a plant in a tight joint before you pull it. General OSU weed-management guidance notes that small hand tools are useful in confined spaces and identifies a dandelion digger for deep taproots. That is general advice, not a test or endorsement of a particular patio weeder. Work carefully so the tool does not gouge the paver edge or remove stable infill along with the weed.

3. Remove new growth in repeat visits
Inspect the joints periodically and remove seedlings while they are small and accessible. OSU’s general weed guidance explains that repeatedly removing new shoots can weaken perennial weeds over time. It does not establish a visit schedule or guarantee eradication between pavers, so treat this as ongoing maintenance rather than a one-time cure.
4. Consider a torch only when conditions allow
OSU’s permeable-paver fact sheet lists a torch as one possible approach, but it does not provide a universal safety procedure or confirm compatibility with every paver, joint material, or nearby setting. Use one only if the paving system and local conditions permit it. Follow the torch manufacturer’s instructions and local fire rules, and do not use it near combustible materials. If you cannot verify that the area is suitable, choose another method.

5. Use herbicides only according to the label
Integrated pest management means choosing an approach suited to the weed and site rather than applying a chemical by default. If you decide to use a herbicide, use a product labeled for the intended site and follow its current directions, application restrictions, and required protective equipment exactly. OSU cautions that herbicides and other pesticides can be pollutants on or near low-impact development facilities, so take particular care around permeable paving designed to carry water into the ground.
6. Restore joint infill where needed
Weeds are not the only sign that a paver joint needs attention. For the permeable-paver system covered by OSU’s maintenance fact sheet, refill infill if it drops below the paver surface; that fact sheet specifies coarse sand meeting ASTM C-33 for its described system. Do not assume that specification applies to every patio: follow the paver manufacturer’s guidance for your installation. Restoring the joint material maintains the system, but it does not prevent every seed from establishing.

Why vinegar is not a dependable permanent fix
Vinegar and other organic herbicides act as contact treatments: they burn foliage they touch rather than moving through the plant to kill perennial roots. OSU says they may not work on larger weeds and often need frequent reapplication. Young, recently germinated weeds are more likely to be affected than established plants.
Household vinegar and horticultural vinegar are not interchangeable in strength. OSU describes horticultural vinegar at 20% acetic acid as four times the concentration of household vinegar and advises careful skin and eye protection when handling it. Concentrated acetic acid can injure people and nearby plants; do not treat it as a harmless household shortcut or assume it will kill a weed’s roots.

What to avoid
- Do not expect any of these approaches to prevent all future weeds; new seeds can reach the joints.
- Do not assume a torch is suitable for every paver, joint material, or location.
- Do not use homemade mixtures of salt, dish detergent, bleach, or other household ingredients as paver weed treatments; the cited guidance does not support them.
- Do not apply a pesticide without checking its label and considering nearby plants, drainage, and stormwater infrastructure.
