6 Perennial Border Plants to Consider for Your Yard or Garden

Choose border perennials by site conditions, mature size and bloom timing. These six options offer starting points, not a one-size-fits-all planting plan.

There is no universal six-plant recipe for a perennial border: the right choices depend on your site’s sun, drainage, space and climate. Start by noting how many hours of sun the bed receives, whether its soil drains or stays wet, the mature height and spread you can accommodate, and when you want flowers. The six options below offer useful starting points, not a guaranteed mix for every garden. The plant details are drawn largely from Missouri Botanical Garden references; readers outside central Missouri should check local hardiness and extension advice before planting.

How to choose the best perennial plants for a border

Match each plant to the conditions where it will grow. A perennial suited to dry soil may struggle in a persistently wet bed, while a plant that prefers consistent moisture may disappoint in a dry site. Check light, drainage, mature size and maintenance needs for the particular species or cultivar rather than assuming plants in the same genus are interchangeable. Missouri Botanical Garden’s perennial landscaping fact sheet covers these planning considerations.

  • Light: Record whether the bed is in full sun, part shade or shade, and choose plants accordingly.
  • Moisture and drainage: Note whether the soil drains freely or remains damp, then verify that the plant suits those conditions.
  • Room to grow: Plan for mature height and spread, not the size of a plant in its nursery pot.
  • Flower succession: Most perennials bloom for a limited period. Combine different bloom times and flower forms for a longer display and to support pollinators through the growing season. The Royal Horticultural Society’s border guidance recommends a range of flowering times and shapes.

For a border viewed from one side, put taller plants toward the back and shorter ones near the front. University of Missouri Extension’s guidance for central Missouri describes edging plants as 1–12 inches tall, middle-bed plants as 12–36 inches, and background plants as over 36 inches. Those categories are a regional design guide, not a universal spacing rule. See its flowering-perennial guidance and confirm mature dimensions for your chosen plants.

Six perennial border plants to consider

These examples span different sizes and bloom periods, but they do not all share the same site needs. Use the details to decide which are worth checking against your own conditions.

1. Compact tickseed (Coreopsis grandiflora ‘Sun Up’)

Missouri Botanical Garden lists this compact perennial at 10–12 inches tall, suited to full sun and dry-to-medium moisture, with flowers from June through August. It can self-seed and spread by rhizomes, so allow room for it to expand. Deadheading can encourage further bloom; in formal borders, division may be needed every two to three years. Check the Plant Finder entry for the named cultivar.

2. Woodland sage (Salvia nemorosa ‘Pusztaflamme’ / PLUMOSA)

This sage typically reaches 15–18 inches and produces flower spikes in late spring to early summer. Deadheading can prompt repeat bloom through summer and into fall. Missouri Botanical Garden lists it for perennial borders; confirm its fit for your bed’s light, soil and local climate using the Plant Finder entry.

3. Salvia transsylvanica

A larger, clump-forming sage, it grows about 2–3 feet tall and blooms from June to September. It suits full sun to part shade. The Missouri Botanical Garden notes it may become open or floppy later in summer, particularly in humid climates, so consider its mature form and nearby support when placing it. See the Plant Finder entry.

4. Threadleaf coreopsis

Missouri Botanical Garden includes threadleaf coreopsis among heat-tough perennials for July. It may be a useful lead for a sunny border, but the general recommendation does not establish identical needs for every species or cultivar. Check the specific plant’s light, moisture, mature dimensions and regional suitability before buying. The Garden’s continuous-bloom guidance lists it among its July options.

5. Purple coneflower

Purple coneflower also appears on the Missouri Botanical Garden’s list of heat-tough July perennials. That makes it a candidate to investigate for a summer border, not a blanket recommendation for every site or cultivar. Verify local hardiness and the particular plant’s growing requirements using regional guidance.

6. Globe thistle

Globe thistle is another July option in the Garden’s heat-tough list. Before choosing it, confirm the mature size and conditions for the species or cultivar available to you; a broad plant name alone is not enough to establish that it will suit your border.

The same Garden list also names obedient plant and rudbeckia as heat-tough July choices. They are further options to investigate if the six above do not fit your space. The list is a starting point, not proof that all plants or cultivars have the same care needs.

Which perennials work in shade or dry soil?

For shade, Missouri Botanical Garden’s perennial fact sheet includes hosta among its choices. For dry-site examples, it lists coreopsis, sage and daylily. These are broad leads rather than guarantees: verify the exact species or cultivar, its moisture needs and its suitability for your local climate before planting. The Growing Perennials fact sheet provides the examples.

How to plan flowers across the season

Do not expect one perennial to flower continuously. Most have a defined flowering period, so combine plants with different bloom times and forms. The three named examples above include June–August bloom for ‘Sun Up,’ late-spring to early-summer spikes for ‘Pusztaflamme’ (with possible repeat flowering after deadheading), and June–September bloom for Salvia transsylvanica. Use local plant references to fill gaps in the season; bloom timing can vary with climate and growing conditions. University of Missouri Extension explains the value of selecting plants with different flowering times in its ornamental guidance.

Regional limits matter

The University of Missouri Extension flowering-perennial recommendations are primarily for central Missouri. That scope matters: hardiness, heat, humidity, rainfall and soil conditions vary by region. If you garden elsewhere, use local extension recommendations and check the hardiness and site requirements for the exact plant you intend to grow. A plant’s performance in a central-Missouri list should not be treated as a promise for another climate.
