The most reliable nonlethal approach is layered: remove food, eliminate hiding places, protect pets and poultry, close fence gaps, and haze a coyote that comes too close. Motion-activated lights or sprinklers can supplement those steps, but no single measure guarantees that every coyote will stay away.
Why coyotes visit residential yards
Coyotes usually investigate opportunities rather than “invade” a property at random. Accessible food, shelter, and small animals can make a yard worth revisiting. A construction-minded inspection should therefore look at three things: what can be eaten, where an animal can hide or den, and how it could get through, under, or over a boundary.

The six measures below are compatible. Start with attractant control and animal safety, then add physical exclusion or electronic devices where the property still presents a problem.
1. Remove easy food sources
Food control is often the least expensive and most broadly useful change. Bring pet food indoors and remove bowls immediately after feeding. Store garbage, compost, and food scraps in containers that cannot be tipped or opened easily; where local collection rules allow, put bins out on pickup morning rather than leaving them outside for days.

- Adjustable Detection Range & Spray Duration - Customize coverage with an adjustable sensor range of up to 40 ft. and spray durations from approximately 3 to 10 seconds to fit your outdoor space.
- 30-Minute Manual Watering Function - In addition to animal deterrence, activate a convenient 30-minute manual watering cycle for quick watering tasks around lawns, gardens, and planting areas.
- Pick up fallen apples, berries, and other fruit promptly.
- Clean spilled bird seed and consider moving feeders away from the house.
- Do not leave meat scraps or other edible waste in an open compost pile.
- Check sheds, patios, and side yards for bags of feed or unsecured waste.
North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission and Alberta guidance both identify pet food, garbage, fallen fruit, and bird seed as attractants. Removing those resources can be more cost-effective than relying on a barrier or repellent alone.
2. Reduce brush and shelter
Dense vegetation and open spaces beneath structures can provide cover for coyotes or for the rodents and other prey that attract them. Trim thick brush and weeds near the house, remove debris or brush piles, and prune low branches that create concealed routes.
Inspect the underside of decks, porches, sheds, and other outbuildings. Close openings that an animal could use, but first confirm that no wildlife is inside. Use durable, wildlife-resistant materials and extend repairs to the ground so a gap does not simply reappear after soil settles.

3. Supervise pets and secure small animals
Never leave a dog or other pet outside unattended where coyotes are active. Keep cats indoors, accompany dogs on outdoor trips, and use a leash rather than allowing unsupervised roaming. Coyotes may treat small pets as prey even when the animal is close to a home.
Backyard chickens, rabbits, and other small livestock need predator-resistant housing, particularly overnight. Use a roofed or otherwise covered pen, secure doors with hardware that cannot be nudged open, and inspect mesh for tears and loose edges. Bury or anchor the lower edge where digging is a concern. Remove spilled feed and collect eggs promptly so the enclosure does not become an additional attractant.
4. Build or improve a coyote-resistant fence
Fencing can deter entry only when it addresses climbing, jumping, and digging. Begin by walking the entire perimeter: check gate clearances, corners, drainage points, and the bottom edge for holes or erosion. Close openings under gates and repair sections that have pulled away from posts.

| North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission | At least 6 feet | A continuous ground barrier | Outward extension or coyote roller |
| Government of Ontario | 2 metres | Extend at least 20 centimetres below ground | Roller system suggested as an added measure |
Choose the design for the animals being protected, the soil, drainage, existing fence, and local building or wildlife rules. Welded-wire mesh can form a ground apron or buried barrier; anchor it securely so an animal cannot lift the edge. A roller or outward overhang helps with climbing, but it does not replace a bottom barrier. Gates should match the fence standard, including their bottom clearance and latch security.
5. Haze a coyote that approaches
Hazing teaches a coyote that people and yards are unsafe. North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission advises, “Don’t be intimidated by a coyote”: make yourself look large, shout, clap, and maintain eye contact without moving closer. You can throw a small object such as a tennis ball toward (not at close range or in a way that corners) the animal, or spray it with a hose. The National Park Service also describes water spray and similar surprise actions as hazing options.
- Keep children and pets behind you or indoors.
- Give the coyote an open escape route; do not surround, chase, or corner it.
- Use a firm voice, loud noise, and a hose or other safe distance tool.
- Stop when the animal leaves and allow it to get away.
Do not feed a coyote, approach it for a photograph, or attempt to handle an injured animal. If it repeatedly ignores direct hazing, acts aggressively, or appears sick, contact local animal control or the relevant wildlife agency. Reporting requirements and response procedures vary by location.
6. Add motion-triggered deterrents as supplements
Motion-sensitive lighting and sprinklers can interrupt an animal’s approach, especially at a gate, path, or other identified route. Ontario lists both options, while Michigan Department of Natural Resources cautions that motion-activated devices may work only briefly as coyotes become accustomed to them.

- Easy to set up | Motion sprinkler head can be adjusted 360 degrees, with a maximum detection range of 1000 square feet and a detection angle of 120 degrees. The sensitivity of the animal repellent can be adjusted according to your needs
- 5 secs Indirect spraying | When the animal is found, the driver will spray for 5 seconds. When the animal is found again, it will start spraying again until the animal leaves, which is efficient and can save water
- Birds are extremely annoyed by this device | this device can scare animals away without any damage and reliably protect your garden and yard
- Effective protection | Sprinkler animal repellent can effectively let birds, foxes, herons, cats, dogs, squirrels, deer, skunks, and other animals leave your garden
- Two type of water hose can be connected 1. remove the connector and rotate US standard hose with 3/4'' GHT solid brass male thread onto the metal pin 2. connect the 3/4 inch water pipe to the quick connect and insert it into the connector
Install a device where its sensor covers the approach rather than a busy public walkway. A sprinkler needs a reliable water supply and protection from freezing; a light needs power, battery maintenance, or solar exposure. Rotate locations or combine the device with attractant removal and fencing instead of treating it as a stand-alone solution. The sources do not establish a best commercial brand or model.
How to choose the right combination
Match the intervention to the failure you can observe:
- Repeated visits near bins or a patio: secure garbage, pet food, compost, and fallen fruit first.
- Activity along brush or beneath a deck: clear vegetation and close confirmed shelter openings.
- Risk to a dog, cat, or poultry: supervise outdoor time and upgrade the animal’s enclosure.
- Tracks, digging, or a known entry point: repair gates and add a continuous buried or surface ground barrier.
- An animal lingering near people: haze from a safe distance and report behavior that is bold, aggressive, or unresponsive.
- A property that already has basic controls: try a motion sprinkler or light as an additional, monitored layer.
Before installing a fence or device, check municipal rules, property lines, water and electrical access, winter conditions, and local wildlife regulations. A local wildlife-exclusion or qualified fence professional can help design a barrier for the site, but verify licensing and experience with wildlife exclusion before hiring.

Coyote behavior and legal requirements differ among states, provinces, and municipalities. A coyote seen passing through is not automatically dangerous; Michigan DNR notes that “A bold coyote is not necessarily an aggressive coyote.” Keep distance, protect people and pets, and seek local agency advice for persistent, sick, injured, or aggressive animals. Consistent removal of food and shelter, combined with supervision and a properly detailed barrier, provides the strongest practical defense for most yards.
