The cabinet trends that defined 2025 were warmer and more personal than the standardized all-white kitchen—but white cabinets and Shaker doors were far from obsolete. The strongest directions were visible wood grain, earthy color, two-tone combinations, furniture-style detailing, selective texture and glass, and storage designed around daily routines.
Because 2025 has passed, this is a retrospective for U.S. homeowners planning a remodel, refacing project, island update or cabinet replacement. It separates what designers and kitchen professionals predicted from what homeowners actually selected. That distinction matters: the NKBA’s 2025 forecast surveyed 523 North American industry professionals about expected trends, while Houzz surveyed 1,620 U.S. homeowners who had recently completed, were undertaking or were planning a kitchen renovation.

The practical lesson is not to copy a trend board. Use the trend that improves your kitchen’s warmth, storage and usability, then decide whether it belongs throughout the room, on the island or in one smaller accent.

What the 2025 cabinet data actually showed
Professional forecasts and homeowner behavior pointed in related but different directions. NKBA professionals favored personality, color, white oak, concealed storage and multifunctional kitchens. Homeowners were adopting some of those ideas, but they were still choosing familiar materials and door styles in large numbers.

- White remained the leading cabinet color in Houzz’s homeowner study at 33%, followed by wood tones at 23% and off-white at 14%.
- Paint remained the dominant finish at 57%, while stain accounted for 17% and wood veneer for 7%.
- Shaker doors remained the leading style at 61%, followed by flat-panel doors at 22%, raised-panel doors at 12% and glass-front doors as the primary door style at 3%.
- Natural wood was a major design direction, but that did not mean every homeowner replaced painted cabinetry with solid hardwood.
- Storage improvements were widespread: Houzz found that 69% of renovating homeowners replaced all their cabinets, while 27% completed a partial cabinet project.
NKBA’s forecast was more directional. Seventy-one percent of its respondents preferred colorful kitchens that showed personality over classic white kitchens. Green led the predicted 2025 kitchen colors at 76%, followed by blue at 63% and brown at 56%. Those are professional expectations, not a count of completed homeowner kitchens. Houzz found that green and blue each represented only 5% of upgraded cabinet colors.
Both findings can be true: designers can be steering the market toward warmer, more individual kitchens while most homeowners continue to choose white, painted and Shaker cabinetry.
Renovation context: Houzz reported a $60,000 median spend for major kitchen renovations, with the top 10% of spenders investing at least $180,000. Those figures describe complete major renovations, not the cost of any individual cabinet trend. Eighty-six percent of homeowners worked with a professional, including general contractors and cabinetmakers. See Houzz’s methodology and renovation context.
Quick comparison: which trends are easiest to use?
| Trend | Best use | Visual impact | Practical risk | Lower-commitment option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Natural wood | Full kitchen, island or lower cabinets | High | Grain, color and finish variation | Wood island, pantry or tall cabinet wall |
| Earthy color | Island, lowers, pantry or beverage station | High | Color commitment and lighting sensitivity | Paint one accent cabinet or use replaceable hardware |
| Mixed materials | Perimeter-and-island contrast | Medium to high | Finishes can look unrelated | Add one contrasting finish |
| Furniture-style details | Traditional or transitional homes | High | More precise construction and installation | Use a furniture-style island |
| Fluted, reeded and glass fronts | Accent cabinet, display area or island end panel | Medium to high | Cleaning and organization | One door bank, end panel or glass cabinet |
| Concealed storage | Any kitchen where function is the priority | Functional rather than decorative | Requires detailed planning | Add drawer inserts, pullouts or waste storage |
1. Natural wood grain and warmer stains
What it looks like
The clearest material shift of 2025 was toward cabinetry with visible grain and more warmth. White oak received the most attention, but the broader category includes rift-cut oak, walnut, cherry and medium-tone stains. The goal was not necessarily dark wood or an entire kitchen made from solid lumber. It was a less opaque, more tactile alternative to a fully painted cabinet run.
What the evidence says
White oak was the leading cabinet wood direction in NKBA’s professional forecast, selected by 59% of respondents. In Houzz’s homeowner study, wood tones were the second-most-popular cabinet color at 23%. Houzz also reported that 72% of homeowners selected solid wood as the primary cabinet material and 17% selected stain as the finish.
Those categories should not be combined as though they measure the same thing. “Wood tones” describes appearance; “solid wood” describes a material choice; and “stain” describes a finish. A cabinet can have a wood appearance without every component being solid lumber, and a high-quality cabinet may combine solid-wood doors with engineered components in the box.
Where to use it
- Use a consistent wood finish across the full cabinet run for a warm, enveloping kitchen.
- Use wood on the island, lower cabinets, pantry or tall storage wall when a full wood kitchen feels too heavy.
- Pair wood with painted cabinetry, stone, plaster-like surfaces or restrained metal rather than matching every wood surface.
- Compare samples in the actual kitchen at different times of day. Daylight and artificial lighting can change how a stain reads.
Ask the cabinet supplier for a finish sample that shows expected grain variation. Natural wood is not visually uniform, and a sample with unusually straight or quiet grain may not represent the complete installation.
What it complicates
Wood grain can become visually busy when it is combined with patterned flooring, heavily veined countertops and several competing stains. Very orange or glossy finishes may also feel dated even when the underlying material is well made.
Wood responds to changes in household humidity. Wood-Mode’s care guidance explains that wood loses moisture and contracts when household relative humidity falls, which can affect door movement and fit. The cabinet manufacturer’s care instructions and the home’s climate should be considered before specifying a wood-heavy kitchen.
“Natural” is not automatically the same as sustainable. Homeowners who care about sourcing should ask about forestry certification or the KCMA Environmental Stewardship Program rather than relying on a marketing label alone.
Best lower-risk alternative
Specify a wood island, pantry cabinet or one tall storage wall while keeping the perimeter painted. This brings in warmth without committing every cabinet surface to one stain and makes future refinishing or replacement more straightforward.
2. Earthy colors and selective statement cabinetry
What it looks like
2025 color forecasts favored nature-connected shades: green, blue, brown, clay, ochre, terracotta, olive, mushroom and warm neutral tones. The most usable version of this trend is color with restraint—not necessarily a kitchen covered in saturated paint from floor to ceiling.

What the evidence says
NKBA’s professional respondents predicted green would lead kitchen colors in 2025 at 76%, with blue at 63% and brown at 56%. Fifty-two percent said cabinets would be a primary location for statement color.
Homeowner selections were more conservative. In Houzz’s data, white accounted for 33% of upgraded cabinet colors, wood tones 23%, off-white 14%, gray 6%, green 5%, blue 5%, greige 4%, black 2% and brown 1%. The evidence supports a growing appetite for color, but not the claim that colorful cabinets had overtaken white in the overall homeowner market.
Where to use it
- A contrasting island is the most visible and controlled application.
- Lower cabinets can carry color while lighter uppers preserve an open feeling.
- A coffee station, pantry, beverage cabinet or furniture-style hutch can become a statement area.
- A single tall cabinet can introduce color without requiring the entire kitchen to coordinate around it.
Sample colors beside the countertop, backsplash, flooring and adjacent rooms. A green that looks muted in a showroom may appear much stronger in direct daylight. Conversely, a pale warm neutral can look yellow under warm artificial lighting.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?

What it complicates
Dark and saturated colors can make a small or poorly lit kitchen feel visually heavier. Dark matte finishes may also show grease, dust and fingerprints differently from light finishes. Matte does not mean maintenance-free: Formica’s finish guidance notes that matte surfaces can conceal minor marks better than gloss, while textured matte surfaces may retain grease and require suitable non-abrasive cleaning.
Paint color is also a permanent decision once it is applied across a custom kitchen, although it is generally easier to change than cabinet construction or integrated appliance panels. Ask for the manufacturer’s touch-up and cleaning instructions before choosing a dark or unusual finish.
Best lower-risk alternative
Put the strongest color on the island or one accent cabinet and use a warm neutral on the main run. That preserves personality while limiting the amount of cabinetry that would need to be repainted if your preferences change.
3. Two-tone and mixed-material cabinetry
What it looks like
The two-tone kitchen moved beyond the familiar white-uppers-and-dark-lowers formula. 2025 combinations included painted perimeter cabinets with a wood island, wood lowers with painted uppers, two related wood tones, and smooth doors paired with fluted, reeded or glass-front sections. The underlying idea was to layer finishes instead of making every cabinet identical.

Houzz found that 24% of renovating homeowners used contrasting colors for upper and lower cabinets. Among those choosing contrasting lower cabinets, wood tones led at 33%, followed by blue at 23%, green at 10%, gray at 9% and black at 8%.
Editorial coverage from The Kitchn also identified warm wood paired with matte-painted cabinetry, fluted details and textured glass as alternatives to a single-material kitchen. Those articles are useful indicators of design direction, not adoption statistics.
Where to use it
Choose one dominant finish and one supporting finish. A painted perimeter with a wood island is often easier to organize visually than four different cabinet treatments. You can also use wood lowers for warmth near the work zones and a lighter painted upper run to keep the room from feeling enclosed.
Repeat a color, wood undertone or metal elsewhere in the room so the contrast looks intentional. Compare wood samples side by side: two products both described as white oak may have very different undertones, grain patterns and levels of variation.

What it complicates
- Two finishes can look accidental if there is no clear relationship between them.
- A large wood island may dominate a compact kitchen.
- Different finishes can have different care requirements and may age or fade differently.
- Matching stain batches and grain direction across a large installation can require careful ordering and fabrication.
- Replacement doors or future additions may be difficult to match if a finish is discontinued.
Best lower-risk alternative
Use one contrasting finish only on the island, a pantry wall or a furniture-style hutch. The useful takeaway is not simply “choose two colors”; it is to use contrast to organize the room—such as a darker island as an anchor or wood lowers to add warmth where the cabinetry receives the most visual attention.

4. Furniture-style, inset and traditional detailing
What it looks like
Furniture-like cabinetry offered an alternative to generic, builder-grade minimalism. Details included inset doors, framed construction, furniture-style island bases, decorative legs or feet, more nuanced trim, freestanding cabinet pieces, arched forms and references to traditional or period-inspired architecture.
Houzz reported that traditional kitchen style rose five percentage points to 14% in its 2025 study. Transitional style remained the leading overall style at 25%, so the most accurate interpretation is a broader appetite for character—not a wholesale return to ornate kitchens. Homes & Gardens’ 2025 cabinet coverage likewise pointed to furniture-style bases, inset doors and historical references.
Inset versus overlay: what changes?
- Inset cabinetry: the doors and drawers sit within the cabinet face frame. The reveals around each front become part of the design.
- Overlay cabinetry: the doors and drawers sit over the cabinet frame. Overlay can be partial or full, depending on how much of the frame is covered.
Inset is a construction and installation decision, not merely a decorative door profile. It requires precise alignment, consistent reveals and careful adjustment. In some configurations it can provide less usable interior space than an overlay cabinet, and seasonal wood movement can affect door fit. Ask the cabinetmaker how the design accommodates humidity and future adjustment.
Where to use it
A furniture-style island, one hutch-like cabinet or a freestanding-looking baking center can supply character without requiring elaborate detailing on every cabinet. Match the detail level to the home’s architecture. A restrained inset island can work in a transitional home; extensive arches, feet and trim may look disconnected from a very contemporary room.
What it complicates
Inset construction and decorative millwork generally demand more fabrication and installation precision. Feet, ledges and trim create additional surfaces to clean and may interfere with seating, sweeping or appliance clearances. A decorative island should still preserve comfortable walkways, seating depth and access to nearby appliances.
Best lower-risk alternative
Keep the main run in a familiar Shaker or flat-panel style and add furniture-style detailing to the island or one display cabinet. This creates a focal point without making every cabinet dependent on a period-specific design.
What did not become obsolete
Shaker doors remained the most common homeowner-selected door style in Houzz’s 2025 data at 61%. The more accurate story is that Shaker was supplemented by slimmer profiles, flat fronts, inset construction, glass, fluting and mixed finishes—not universally replaced.

What it looks like
Texture became a way to add personality without relying entirely on color. The category includes fluted or reeded doors, slatted wood, seeded or textured glass, glass-front accent cabinets, textured laminates, metal inserts and curved or sculptural cabinet ends.
These terms are related but not interchangeable. Fluted surfaces have repeated grooves; reeded surfaces typically use rounded, closely spaced ridges; slatted fronts use more pronounced strips or gaps; and textured glass changes what can be seen through the door while retaining an enclosed cabinet.
What the evidence says
Houzz found that 52% of renovating homeowners added or upgraded an accent cabinet or shelf. Among those accent features, glass-front doors led at 36%, Shaker doors accounted for 23%, open shelves 16% and reeded or fluted doors only 1%. The data makes fluting a credible high-visibility design detail, but not evidence that it was widespread across complete kitchen cabinet packages.
Homes & Gardens’ fluted-cabinet guide similarly recommended using the treatment selectively on islands, tall cabinets or freestanding pieces.

- Use fluting on an island end panel rather than every door.
- Add one bank of reeded doors to a beverage station or tall cabinet.
- Use glass fronts for dishes, glassware or other curated display items.
- Choose glass-front cabinets as a middle ground between completely closed storage and open shelving.
- Pair one tactile finish with smooth doors and quieter countertops.
What it complicates
Grooves and ridges provide more surfaces for dust, grease and cooking residue. Later coverage from Homes & Gardens specifically raised maintenance concerns about fluted surfaces in working kitchens. Follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions and consider where the textured cabinet will sit relative to the cooktop and sink.

Glass fronts require organization because the contents remain visible. Interior lighting can improve the effect but adds electrical planning. Open shelves provide fast access but give up concealed storage and require more consistent cleaning and styling. Houzz found glass-front accent cabinets were more common than open shelves, while NKBA’s forecast emphasized concealed storage.
Best lower-risk alternative
Use one glass-front cabinet or one fluted island end panel. You get a tactile focal point without creating a full kitchen of difficult-to-clean grooves or display surfaces.
6. Concealed, personalized storage and integrated appliances
What it looks like
The most practical cabinet direction of 2025 was designing storage around the household rather than simply filling a wall with standard boxes. Examples include deep drawers, pullout waste and recycling, tray and sheet-pan storage, spice organizers, mixer lifts, appliance garages, beverage stations, coffee zones, pantry cabinets, butler’s pantries and floor-to-ceiling storage.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsAppliances also became more visually integrated. Panel-ready refrigerators and dishwashers, hidden range hoods and cabinetry-integrated appliances support a quieter appearance. Minimal or integrated hardware can reinforce that look, although handleless doors should be evaluated for usability rather than chosen only for appearance.
What the evidence says
Houzz found that drawers and door cabinets appeared in 80% and 79% of upgraded islands, respectively; only 2% of islands had no storage. Specialty island storage included pullout waste or recycling centers at 67%, tray organizers at 59%, spice storage at 43%, microwave storage at 43% and pantry cabinets at 45%.
NKBA’s professional forecast found that 87% of respondents expected concealed pantries behind doors or panels to be popular, 66% expected walk-in or butler’s pantries to gain popularity and 91% expected multifunctional appliances to be popular. The report also found that 92% agreed the kitchen reflects the homeowner’s personality and 75% of designers agreed homeowners wanted kitchens unique to them. Read NKBA’s detailed trend summary.
Plan storage by activity
Instead of asking only how many cabinets the kitchen needs, map storage to tasks:
- Prep zone: cutting boards, knives, mixing bowls and food containers.
- Cooking zone: pots, pans, utensils, oils and spices.
- Cleanup zone: dishes, trash, recycling and cleaning supplies.
- Coffee or beverage zone: mugs, machines, filters and glassware.
- Baking zone: sheet pans, flour, mixers and cooling racks.
- Family or pet zone: snacks, lunch supplies or pet-feeding items.
Deep drawers are often convenient for heavy or wide items, but they need strong, properly adjusted hardware and can become difficult to move when overloaded. Appliance garages need outlet planning, door clearance and appropriate ventilation. A concealed refrigerator or dishwasher requires exact coordination between appliance specifications, cabinet dimensions, panels, ventilation and future service access.
Accessibility and maintenance still matter
Concealed does not mean maintenance-free. Pantry doors, appliance garages and integrated appliances still need to open fully and remain serviceable. Include reachable drawers, pull-down storage where appropriate, task lighting, clearances and reduced bending for the people who use the kitchen. A visually minimal kitchen can be less functional if every daily-use item is hidden in a deep or difficult-to-reach cabinet.
Best lower-risk alternative
Add drawer inserts, tray dividers, pullout waste storage or a single appliance garage to existing cabinets. These improvements can make the kitchen feel substantially more personalized without changing every cabinet front.

If you are doing a budget refresh
Start with changes that do not require new cabinet boxes: replace hardware, refinish exterior doors, add organizers, install pullouts or upgrade one accent area. Houzz found exterior refinishing was the most common partial cabinet upgrade among homeowners undertaking partial work. A painted existing door plus a wood accent, new handles or improved interior storage can capture several 2025 directions without a full replacement.

Use the island or a high-visibility run as the test area. Good candidates include a contrasting wood island, an earthy painted island, one glass-front cabinet, a fluted end panel or a beverage station. Reface only the island or one run if the existing cabinet layout and boxes are sound. This limits the permanent commitment while addressing the part of the kitchen that has the greatest visual impact.

If you are replacing all the cabinets
Make construction and storage decisions before choosing the trend finish. Houzz reported that 45% of renovating homeowners selected fully customized cabinets, 32% partially customized cabinets, 12% stock cabinets and 9% ready-to-assemble cabinets. The right category depends on the room, budget, schedule and required fit; customization alone does not guarantee better performance.
Before approving a cabinet package, ask about:
- Door and drawer material, box construction and joinery.
- Finish system, touch-up process and cleaning requirements.
- Hinge and drawer-slide adjustment, load ratings and warranty coverage.
- Moisture resistance in areas near the sink, dishwasher and range.
- How wood movement and seasonal humidity will be handled.
- Panel-ready appliance dimensions, ventilation and future service access.
- Whether the cabinetmaker tests products to KCMA A161.1, a performance standard covering loading, door and hinge operation, drawer operation, finish resistance and water-related testing.
- Whether any sustainability claims are supported by recognized certification, such as the programs described in KCMA’s cabinet buyer’s guide.
If resale is a concern
Do not assume a trend will increase resale value. A distinctive cabinet color, unusual texture or highly customized storage may appeal strongly to some buyers and narrow the audience for others. A durable layout, good installation, useful storage, appropriate lighting and finishes that suit the home’s architecture are safer priorities than chasing a predicted “next” look.
A contractor-ready cabinet trend checklist
- Decide whether the idea is a full-run choice or an accent. Wood, color, inset construction and integrated appliances have different levels of permanence.
- Identify the evidence. NKBA figures represent professional forecasts; Houzz figures represent homeowner selections; magazine articles represent editorial observation and expert opinion.
- View physical samples in the room. Check wood grain, paint undertone, gloss level and texture in daylight and under the planned lighting.
- Coordinate all adjacent materials. Compare cabinets with countertops, backsplash, flooring, appliances, wall color and nearby rooms.
- Test the maintenance burden. Ask how grooves, glass, dark finishes and integrated panels should be cleaned.
- Plan the cabinet internals before the elevations are finalized. Specify drawer sizes, tray storage, waste centers, outlets, appliance garages, pantry access and lighting.
- Protect serviceability. Hidden appliances and concealed storage must still open, ventilate and be repairable.
- Design for the people who use the kitchen. Check reach ranges, drawer weight, handle comfort, walkway clearances and seating access.
- Confirm the installation and warranty responsibilities. Ask who measures, who installs, who adjusts doors and who handles damage or finish issues after installation.
The 2025 takeaway
2025 did not produce one replacement for the white Shaker kitchen. It produced more ways to personalize a familiar foundation. Natural wood, earthy color, mixed finishes and furniture-style accents added warmth and character, while concealed storage and integrated appliances addressed clutter and daily routines.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are white kitchen cabinets out in 2025?
No. White remained the most common upgraded cabinet color in Houzz’s 2025 U.S. homeowner data at 33%. The 2025 shift was toward more choice—especially wood tones, earthy colors and mixed finishes—not the disappearance of white cabinetry.
Are Shaker cabinets still popular?
Yes. Shaker doors accounted for 61% of primary cabinet door styles in Houzz’s 2025 homeowner study. They were supplemented by flat-panel, inset, glass and textured details rather than universally replaced.
Are green and blue cabinets really popular?
They were prominent in professional forecasts but less common in completed homeowner projects. NKBA respondents predicted green and blue as leading 2025 kitchen colors, while Houzz found each in 5% of upgraded cabinet colors. Use them as a forecasted direction, not proof of mass adoption.
Is fluted cabinetry practical?
Fluted cabinetry is practical as an accent, such as on an island end panel or one display cabinet. Its grooves create additional surfaces for dust and grease, so a full kitchen of fluted doors requires more cleaning than smooth fronts.
What is the difference between inset and overlay cabinets?
Inset doors and drawers sit within the cabinet face frame, creating visible reveals around each front. Overlay doors and drawers sit over the frame and may partially or fully cover it. Inset requires particularly precise fabrication and installation, and the configuration may provide less usable interior space than some overlay cabinets.
Are open shelves replacing upper cabinets?
Not generally. Open shelving remained an accent choice, while NKBA’s forecast emphasized concealed pantries and storage. Houzz found glass-front accent cabinets were selected more often than open shelves, making glass a useful option when you want display without fully exposing contents.
What is the easiest cabinet trend to add without replacing the kitchen?
Hardware, drawer organizers, pullouts, waste storage, exterior refinishing and one accent cabinet are the lowest-commitment options. You can also refinish an island or add a wood accent while leaving the existing cabinet boxes in place.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe Bottom Line
The most durable 2025 cabinet strategy is not an all-or-nothing trend. Keep the layout, construction and storage functional; add warmth through wood, color or a contrasting island; use fluting and glass selectively; and specify concealed storage around the way your household actually cooks and cleans. White and Shaker cabinetry remain completely defensible choices when they fit the room and the people using it.
