Some plants wear romance in their names; others carry it through flower symbolism. These six picks include both: love-in-a-mist, bleeding heart, forget-me-not, love-lies-bleeding, Love Restorer stonecrop, and the rose. Their names have different origins and meanings, so it helps to separate botanical facts from tradition.
Six plants with romantic names
| Plant | Why it feels romantic | What the name or symbolism means | Growth habit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) | Common name inspired by its appearance | Lacy foliage surrounds the flower, making it seem to float in a mist. | Annual |
| Bleeding heart (Dicentra; ‘Love Hearts’ cultivar) | Flower shape and a cultivar name | Heart-shaped blooms have inner petals that protrude like a drop of blood. ‘Love Hearts’ is one specific cultivar, not a name for every bleeding heart. | Perennial garden plant |
| Forget-me-not (Myosotis) | Common name and flower symbolism | The RHS associates it with true love; its water forget-me-not profile also lists “love-me” as an alternate common name. | Varies by species |
| Love-lies-bleeding (Amaranthus caudatus) | Evocative common name | Known for long, drooping red or gold tassels. The documented name and appearance do not establish a historical origin story. | Annual |
| Love Restorer stonecrop (Hylotelephium anacampseros) | Common-name tradition | Also called Love-restoring Stonecrop; the name reflects a belief about bringing back lost love, not a proven effect. | Low, spreading succulent |
| Rose (Rosa) | Flower symbolism | Roses are associated with love and good fortune; RHS describes red roses as “eternal love.” Meanings vary by color and tradition. | Varies by species and cultivar |
Names that describe the flower
Love-in-a-mist
Nigella damascena gets its romantic common name from the finely divided foliage that surrounds each flower. The Royal Horticultural Society describes flowers appearing to float among filigree foliage, while NC State Extension also connects the name to that lacy growth. Flower colors can include pale blue, white, pink, and violet.
This annual is a practical choice to grow from seed. Give it a sunny position and well-drained soil. You can collect seed and sow it in autumn, or leave plants to self-sow. Look for love-in-a-mist growing guidance from the RHS and confirm the listing identity and availability when shopping for Nigella damascena love-in-a-mist seeds.
Bleeding heart
In Dicentra, the name bleeding heart points to the flower’s shape: a heart-shaped bloom with inner petals protruding at the bottom, suggesting a drop of blood. Missouri Botanical Garden describes ‘Love Hearts’ as a compact hybrid cultivar with nodding, heart-shaped flowers. That cultivar name belongs to this particular selection, not to all bleeding hearts.

Love-lies-bleeding
Amaranthus caudatus is an annual grown for its long, drooping red or gold tassels. The common name makes a vivid impression, but the available botanical account supports the plant’s identity and appearance—not a particular folklore origin for the phrase.

Forget-me-not
The Royal Horticultural Society lists forget-me-not as a symbol of true love and gives the phrase “the key to my heart.” Separately, its profile for water forget-me-not (Myosotis palustris) lists “love-me” as an alternate common name. One is flower symbolism; the other is a recorded common name for a particular species. Neither should be treated as the botanical origin of “forget-me-not.”

Love Restorer stonecrop
NC State Extension lists Love Restorer and Love-restoring Stonecrop among the common names for Hylotelephium anacampseros, a low, spreading succulent. The source connects the name to a belief that the plant can bring back lost love. That is a piece of name tradition, not evidence that the plant has such an effect.
Rose
Roses have a long-standing place in the language of flowers. The RHS associates roses with love and good fortune and describes red as “eternal love.” Its guidance also notes that meanings differ by color and that roses are unusual for retaining a widely recognized Victorian association with love. These are cultural conventions, not universal rules.
