6 Different Toilet Flush Valve Types and How to Choose the Right Replacement

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right replacement depends first on your toilet’s architecture, then on the valve mechanism. A hinged rubber seal usually means a flapper; a vertical lifting cylinder is a tower or canister; two buttons indicate dual-flush controls but do not, by themselves, identify the valve; a wall-mounted, tankless unit is a flushometer. Identify the mechanism, measure the critical dimensions, and verify the toilet or cistern model before ordering parts.

The six toilet flush valve types

Type How it works Typical visual clues What must match
Flapper (gravity tank) A hinged seal lifts from the tank outlet when the trip lever is pulled, then drops back as the tank empties. Rubber, silicone or plastic flap attached by ears or a hinge; chain connected to a side lever. Outlet diameter, hinge or ear pattern, chain length, seal shape and toilet model.
Tower A vertical cylindrical tower lifts straight up from its seat to open the outlet. No hinged flap; tall tower around or beside the overflow tube, usually linked to a lever or button. Tower height, overflow-tube arrangement, actuator connection, seal and model-specific assembly.
Canister A cylinder-shaped canister rises from a base, exposing a broad outlet. Large round cylinder inside the tank instead of a hinged flapper. Canister seal, cap or actuator, base geometry, part number and tank model.
Dual-flush Two actuators select a smaller liquid-waste flush or a larger solids flush. Two buttons or a split actuator on the lid or flush plate. The underlying valve (often a canister, tower, siphon or flushometer), actuator travel and cistern model.
Flushometer Building water pressure flows directly through a valve into the bowl; there is no storage tank. Wall- or bowl-mounted commercial valve with a handle, push button or sensor. Supply pressure, rated flush volume, bowl compatibility and manual or sensor actuator.
Concealed flush valve The valve, and often the tank, sits behind a wall and is operated through a flush plate or sensor. Only a wall plate or sensor is visible; service components are behind an access opening. Carrier and concealed-tank family, production series, plate and valve compatibility.

1. Flapper valve

Flappers are the common gravity-tank seal. Pulling the trip lever lifts the flap; water leaving the tank creates the flush, and the flap closes when the tank level falls. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says most toilet leaks are caused by old or worn flappers or valve seals. A leaking flapper can allow a silent, intermittent refill even when the bowl appears normal.

Replace only the flapper when the hinge, ears, chain and outlet size match. Some toilets use a 3-inch outlet and require a 3-inch flapper set; others use a 2-inch opening. The toilet’s model number and manufacturer parts diagram are more reliable than appearance alone.

2. Tower valve

A tower valve lifts vertically rather than swinging on a hinge. Its seal sits at the base of a cylindrical tower, commonly around an overflow tube. Inspect the tower height, the overflow-tube relationship and the actuator connection before buying a replacement. Some designs use a replaceable seal; others require the complete tower assembly.

3. Canister valve

A canister valve uses a cylinder that lifts from a base and opens a wide outlet. Kohler describes its dual-flush canister toilet as having “a cylinder-shaped flush valve inside the tank instead of a flapper.” If the toilet leaks, Kohler’s service guidance calls for replacing the leaking seal, provided the replacement matches the canister and tank.

4. Dual-flush valve

Dual-flush describes the control arrangement, not one universal valve body. A small button or half of a split button provides a reduced flush; the other control provides the larger flush. The mechanism underneath may be a canister, tower, siphon or, in some installations, a flushometer.

For example, Geberit Type 212 concealed-tank valves provide built-in dual flush with stated settings of 0.8 or 1.6 gallons and are backward-compatible only within specified concealed-tank families. Compatibility depends on the cistern series and production information, not simply on having two buttons.

5. Flushometer valve

A flushometer is the tankless commercial arrangement used in many public and commercial restrooms. The U.S. Department of Energy explains that pressurized supply water travels through the flush valve directly to the bowl. Diaphragm and piston valves are the two common internal designs.

  • RESTORES OVERALL TOILET PERFORMANCE: All in one toilet repair kit replaces inefficient fill and flush valves, leaky flappers, and broken toilet handles to make your toilet run like new.
  • UNIVERSAL DESIGN: 400A toilet fill valve adjusts easily from 9 – 14 inches, fits most 2-inch flush valve toilets, and is ideal for use in 1.6 to 3.5 gallons per flush toilets or larger
  • HIGH PERFORMANCE FLAPPER: PerforMAX high performance 2-inch adjustable water-saving toilet flapper maximizes water usage with each flush

Before replacing one, confirm the building’s minimum pressure and flow, the valve’s rated flush volume, the bowl’s compatibility and whether the actuator is manual, push-button or sensor-operated. A flushometer cannot replace a gravity-tank flapper without changing the fixture and plumbing system.

6. Concealed flush valve

Concealed systems hide the valve and usually the cistern behind a wall, leaving a flush plate or sensor visible. They provide a clean exterior, but service access and exact carrier or tank compatibility are essential. Geberit’s Type 212 documentation, for instance, limits compatibility by Sigma or Omega series and production dates. Record the cistern family before removing the plate or ordering parts.

How to identify the valve in an installed toilet

  1. Classify the architecture. Is there a visible gravity tank, a pressure-assisted tank, a concealed cistern behind a wall, or no tank with a flushometer? This eliminates incompatible replacement categories immediately.
  2. Look inside the tank when access is safe. A hinged rubber flap indicates a flapper. A straight-lifting tall cylinder indicates a tower. A broad cylinder lifting from a base indicates a canister. Two buttons identify dual-flush controls, but inspect the mechanism beneath them.
  3. Inspect the actuator. Note a side trip lever, top push button, dual button, wall plate, sensor or commercial handle. Measure or photograph the connection before disassembly.
  4. Find the model number. Check the tank interior, underside of the lid, rear wall, bowl or manufacturer label. Use the manufacturer’s parts diagram whenever available.
  5. Measure before ordering. Record the outlet diameter (commonly 2 or 3 inches on tank toilets), overflow-tube height, valve-body height, tank opening and available clearance. Compare the old seal’s geometry as well as its diameter.

Choosing a replacement: a practical decision framework

Start with the plumbing architecture

Gravity-tank parts are not interchangeable with pressure-assisted or tankless commercial hardware. A flushometer needs an adequate pressurized supply and a compatible bowl; a concealed valve needs the correct carrier and service opening. If the architecture is uncertain, stop at identification rather than guessing from the flush button.

Choose the smallest serviceable part

Flappers and many canister seals are inexpensive wear components. Replace the seal alone when the manufacturer provides a matching seal and the valve body is undamaged. Replace a tower or canister assembly when the model requires a complete unit, the seat is cracked or warped, or the actuator and body no longer operate correctly.

Match actuation and flush volume

A replacement must provide the same actuator movement and rated flush volume as the original. For commercial valves, verify pressure and volume ratings; for dual-flush systems, verify both the reduced and full-flush settings. Two buttons are not proof that a generic dual-flush kit will fit.

Use water-efficiency claims precisely

EPA WaterSense Version 2.0 (2024) specifies a maximum of 1.28 gallons per flush for tank toilets and the full-flush mode of dual-flush toilets. EPA states that the Version 2.0 effective date is paused and that Version 1.2 remains in effect until further notice, so check the current specification when selecting a new fixture.

Maintenance and common failure symptoms

  • Toilet refills without flushing: suspect a worn flapper or canister seal, mineral buildup on the seat, a chain that is too tight, or an actuator that cannot let the seal close.
  • Weak or short flush: check whether the tower or canister lifts fully, whether the actuator is adjusted correctly, and whether the valve’s rated volume matches the toilet.
  • Button or lever sticks: inspect the actuator connection and chain for binding before replacing the valve body.
  • Concealed system leaks: use the service opening and the manufacturer’s parts list; do not remove wall finishes to fit an unverified universal valve.
  • Flushometer cycles or will not shut off: check supply pressure and use the correct diaphragm or piston repair kit for that valve model.

Flush action ultimately depends on hydraulic design as well as the valve. Kohler’s support documentation describes how the resulting pressure change forms a siphon, which carries water through the bowl. A correctly identified valve can still perform poorly if the bowl, trapway, supply pressure or actuator is incompatible.

Leak and water-use context

EPA’s residential-toilet guidance (2015, still presented on its current WaterSense guidance page) uses an estimate of 180 gallons per week for a leaking toilet and identifies toilets as a frequent household leak source. That figure is a household guidance estimate, not a prediction for every leak. Fixing a worn seal promptly is usually the first practical step.

What not to assume

  • A two-button actuator does not tell you whether the valve is a canister, tower, siphon or flushometer.
  • A 3-inch flapper is not interchangeable with every other 3-inch flapper; hinge, chain and seal geometry still matter.
  • A universal replacement is not automatically suitable for a concealed cistern or a commercial flushometer.
  • There is no established universal ranking of failure rates, market share or flush performance across all six categories; selection should be based on compatibility and service requirements.
