Good companions for azaleas share their preference for acidic, moist but well-drained soil and partial shade. Consider mountain laurel, Japanese andromeda, blueberry, oakleaf hydrangea, summersweet, and teaberry—but choose for your site’s light, drainage, climate, and available space rather than treating the list as a universal planting plan.
Start with the conditions azaleas need
Azaleas do best in cool, moist conditions, filtered shade, and soil rich in organic matter that drains well. UGA Cooperative Extension describes the preferred soil pH as 4.5 to 6.0; the University of Maryland Extension gives a range of 4.5 to 5.5 for azaleas and rhododendrons. Both recommend partial sunlight. Morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal, and shelter from strong winds can help protect plants. See UGA Cooperative Extension’s azalea guidance and the University of Maryland Extension’s azalea and rhododendron guide.

Filtered shade does not automatically mean planting beneath a tree. Tree roots can compete with azaleas for water and nutrients, so check both root competition and soil moisture before placing shrubs beneath a canopy. Azaleas also have shallow roots and are sensitive to drought and poorly drained soil.
Six plants to consider alongside azaleas
These options combine overlapping growing conditions with different forms of seasonal interest. Mature size and site suitability vary by species and cultivar, so check plant labels and local climate guidance before planting.

Mountain laurel (Kalmia latifolia)
This flowering shrub has cultural requirements similar to those favored by azaleas. It is a natural candidate where the site offers partial shade and suitable acidic, well-drained soil. The University of Maryland Extension includes mountain laurel among landscape plants associated with azalea-like conditions.
-
Japanese andromeda (Pieris japonica)
A flowering shrub that shares similar growing requirements, Japanese andromeda can complement azaleas in a planting with partial shade and acidic soil. As with any shrub pairing, leave enough room for each plant’s mature size.

- Light: Compare the site’s actual sun and shade with the plant’s label. Partial shade can vary from bright filtered light to much deeper shade.
- Soil and water: Look for compatible acidity and moisture needs, while ensuring the planting area drains well. Avoid locations where azaleas will dry out or sit in poorly drained soil.
- Space: Check mature height and width for every species or cultivar, not just its size at purchase. The University of Maryland Extension advises using plant labels because mature size varies widely.
- Climate: Confirm heat and cold tolerance for your region. Blueberry species differ in heat tolerance, and NC State Extension notes that some deciduous azalea hybrids are not heat tolerant; it recommends locally native species or regionally suitable cultivars. See NC State Extension’s guidance on deciduous azaleas.
- Seasonal interest: Decide whether you want flowers, fragrance, fruit, evergreen cover, fall color, or contrast in leaf size, then choose companions that supply those features without crowding the azaleas.
Check the soil before changing it
UGA Cooperative Extension advises testing soil pH and nutrient content before making adjustments. Do not assume that an acidifying product or fertilizer is needed simply because azaleas are present; base amendments on test results and local recommendations. UGA also cautions against aluminum sulfate because it can be toxic to azalea roots. Its description is direct: “Azaleas thrive in moist, well-drained soils high in organic matter.”

A local extension lab can help interpret a soil test. A consumer pH kit may provide a reading, but the appropriate next step depends on the actual soil and the plants you intend to grow.
