They are project inspiration, not six comparable current bicycle models.

1. Build around bamboo
A bamboo bicycle is the most direct expression of the idea of making a bike from a woodworking material. The example uses bamboo, but it also requires other materials to complete the bicycle; “bamboo bicycle” does not mean every component is bamboo. The 2015 article does not give a bill of materials or specifications, so treat it as inspiration for a mixed-material build rather than a set of ready-to-follow plans.

A turned wooden grip is a much smaller way to combine shop work and cycling. Cook describes making a grip on a lathe and notes that the pleasure of making it outweighed the experience of using it, though it was more comfortable than having no grip. It is a useful reminder to distinguish a satisfying shop project from an accessory proven comfortable for extended riding.

3. Give a wooden bicycle an industrial look
Another example pairs a frame and fork with wood and metal or plastic parts, leaving the assembly with a deliberate mechanical, constructed appearance. It is a design direction rather than an all-wood build. The mix of materials is part of the concept, and the article does not supply engineering specifications or performance claims.
4. Make a coconut drink or phone holder
The roundup proposes using a coconut as the basis for a bicycle drink or phone holder. This is an accessory idea rather than a frame or complete-bike project. The article does not establish a construction method, fit, or suitability for holding a phone while riding, so consider it a prompt for a craft project, not a tested mounting solution.

5. Explore a bent-plywood frame
The plywood example combines a bent and stained frame with metal accents or braces. It is shown alongside a $20 donor bicycle in the 2015 article; that is the historical example’s stated donor-bike cost, not a current price or estimate of the whole project. The wood-and-metal combination makes clear that the frame is part of a larger bicycle, not a complete bike made only of wood.

Choosing a direction
- For a full-bike build: consider the bamboo example, while recognizing that it uses additional materials.
- For a frame-focused project: the industrial-design and bent-plywood examples show two different ways to combine wood with non-wood parts.
- For a smaller shop project: a turned grip or coconut holder keeps the idea at accessory scale.
- For a child-focused project: the balance-bike example is the only one in the roundup made for a young child.
