6 Best Electric Snow Shovels for 2026: Compact Picks and Wider Throwers

Six electric snow-removal options compared, with clear distinctions between compact shovels and wider wheeled throwers—and practical advice on choosing by snow, area, and power source.

The best electric snow shovel depends on your space and the snow you usually clear. For paths, steps, decks, and small driveways, a compact cordless model is easier to maneuver than a wider wheeled thrower; a corded tool avoids battery limits but keeps you within reach of an outdoor outlet. The six options below come from Bob Vila’s 2026 comparison, not hands-on testing by Bettesworth Construction, and include both shovel-style tools and larger wheeled machines.

What is the best electric snow shovel?

There is no single winner for every property. Bob Vila’s 2026 comparison names six candidates, but two are 16-inch wheeled snow throwers rather than compact pole-style shovels. The table keeps that distinction visible so you can compare tools by intended use, not just by the word “shovel.” All dimensions and performance observations below are Bob Vila’s published specifications or test results; they are not our tests. See Bob Vila’s comparison.

Model Published size and power Reported performance or limitation Best fit and caveat
Greenworks 80V 12-inch cordless snow shovel 12-inch width; 6-inch maximum depth Bob Vila reports 45 minutes of runtime, throw distance up to 20 feet, and 19.2 pounds with battery installed. Its tester reported good results, including in icy snow, but found it heavier than many alternatives. Higher-capacity cordless candidate. Check the exact kit and current availability.
Snow Joe 24V-SS13 Ionmax cordless bundle 13-inch width; 6-inch depth; 24V Bob Vila reports throw distance up to 20 feet and up to 70 minutes of runtime, while noting a long recharge and weaker suitability for ice or compacted snow. Runtime is the publisher’s reported figure, not a guarantee. Value candidate for paths and porches. Confirm bundle contents.
Earthwise 20V 12-inch cordless snow thrower 12-inch width; 3.5-inch maximum depth Bob Vila reports a weight of 11.5 pounds, good results with powder, and weaker performance in compacted or icy snow. In its test, it provided 20–30 minutes of consistent use, less than the manufacturer’s longer estimate. Light-duty option for powdery snow. Bob Vila’s chart and prose give differing battery-capacity details, so verify the battery configuration.
Earthwise 16-inch 12-amp corded snow thrower 16-inch width; 8-inch depth; corded, 12-amp Bob Vila reports a 20–30-foot discharge range and wheels. Its review notes a risk of thermal shutoff in wet snow. Wider, wheeled option, not a handheld shovel. A cord limits where it can work.
Snow Joe 24V-SS11 Ionmax cordless kit 11-inch width; 7-inch depth; 24V Bob Vila describes it as relatively quiet and reports about 20 minutes of battery use in its testing. Compact areas and light snow; not a fit for large areas or heavy, icy snow.
Earthwise 16-inch 40V 4Ah lithium snow thrower 16-inch width; 8-inch depth; battery powered Bob Vila’s comparison lists these dimensions; it does not establish a runtime figure for this entry. Wheeled wider-area option, not directly comparable to a handheld shovel. Validate current configuration and availability.

Which cordless snow shovel is best for a small driveway?

For a small driveway, match the tool’s intake depth to typical snowfall and its width to the area you need to clear. A narrower shovel requires more passes; a wider wheeled thrower may cover more ground per pass but is bulkier than a pole-style tool. Compact electric shovels are generally intended for paths, steps, decks, patios, and smaller driveways, not large areas or severe accumulations.

Choose by snow, not just by width

Bob Vila’s results point to a meaningful difference in snow texture. Its Earthwise 20V test did well with powder but struggled with compacted and icy snow. Its review of the Snow Joe SS13 also warns that it is less suitable for ice and compacted snow. If your snow often gets wet, hard-packed, or icy, do not treat a powder-oriented result as proof the tool will handle those conditions.

Consider compact alternatives carefully

Current manufacturer pages and a separate 2026 review add other compact candidates, but availability is uncertain. EGO’s SNS1201 product page specifies a 12-inch path, up to 25-foot throw with 60-degree directional control, two speeds, and a listed weight of 16.7 pounds with battery attached. EGO claims the included 2.5Ah battery can clear up to a three-car driveway with six inches of snow; that is a manufacturer claim, not independent performance testing. The page listed the SNS1201 kit and tool-only SNS1200 as “Coming Soon” when checked. Check EGO’s SNS1201 page.

Tom’s Guide says its writer tested the Worx WG460 during the February 2026 blizzard. The review lists a 40V system, 12-inch width, six-inch maximum depth, throw up to 25 feet, and weight of 17.21 pounds; it reported the model sold out at the time of publication. That review is the source for those test and availability details, not a Bettesworth Construction test. Read Tom’s Guide’s WG460 review.

Are electric snow shovels good for wet snow?

Performance varies by model and conditions. The 2026 Bob Vila comparison reports that the Earthwise 16-inch corded thrower can risk thermal shutoff in wet snow, while its Earthwise 20V and Snow Joe SS13 reviews describe weaknesses with compacted or icy snow. These observations are reasons to check the specific model’s limits, not a blanket claim that every electric shovel fails in wet snow.

Joe Palumbo, president of Ice Dam Guys, LLC, told Bob Vila: “We’ve found cordless, battery-powered snow shovels to be more effective than corded electric ones.” He also said: “While most outdoor receptacles have GFCIs, we prefer avoiding plugged-in tools near steam and water for added safety.” These are Palumbo’s views as quoted by Bob Vila, not a universal test result. Read the comparison and quoted comments.

How long does a battery snow shovel run?

Runtime depends on the model, battery condition, snow density, and area cleared. Bob Vila’s reported figures differ across its tested candidates: about 45 minutes for the Greenworks 80V, up to 70 minutes for the Snow Joe SS13, 20–30 minutes of consistent use for the Earthwise 20V, and about 20 minutes before recharging for the Snow Joe SS11. The SS13 figure is described as “up to,” while the Earthwise and SS11 figures come from Bob Vila’s testing; none should be treated as a runtime guarantee for every user.

Manufacturer claims can differ from review results. Snow Joe says the 24V-SS10 can run up to 60 minutes and move 1,632 pounds of snow per charge; its page also specifies a 24V 4.0Ah battery and charger and a maximum charging time of 110 minutes. These are manufacturer-stated figures that depend on conditions, not independent test results. Check Snow Joe’s 24V-SS10 specifications.

Is a corded or cordless snow shovel better?

Choose based on access to power and how far you need to work from it. A corded model can keep running while connected, but the outlet and extension cord constrain reach. A cordless model avoids trailing-cord handling and works away from an outlet, but requires charging and runtime planning. Bob Vila describes typical cordless runtimes across models as roughly 20–50 minutes, while individual products and test conditions vary.

  • Choose cordless when you need to reach steps, a deck, or a path away from an outlet, or want to avoid managing a cord.
  • Choose corded when you have a suitable outdoor outlet and prefer not to plan around battery charging, while accepting restricted reach.
  • Check battery and charger contents before comparing prices. A listing may be tool-only or a bundle, and an existing compatible battery can change the value calculation.

What should you check before buying?

Confirm dimensions against your normal snowfall

Bob Vila says typical electric snow shovels have a 4–8-inch intake depth and 10–16-inch clearing width. These are category-level ranges from its guide, not specifications for every model. Verify the exact product’s width and depth, and consider whether you need extra passes or a wider wheeled tool.

  • Hinged shaft for convenient, compact storage
  • High-efficiency brushless motor delivers long run times, low vibrations, and an extended motor life
  • Two-speed selector for throwing distance control

Compare weight and handling

Weight alone does not determine the best choice: Bob Vila reports 19.2 pounds with battery installed for its Greenworks 80V entry and 11.5 pounds for the Earthwise 20V. Those tools also differ in reported capability. Check the operating weight with the battery installed, handle arrangement, and whether the unit has wheels.

Verify exact kit, platform, warranty, and stock

Product pages can describe different configurations, and availability changes. EGO lists a five-year limited tool warranty and three-year limited battery warranty for the SNS1201 page; it also says its 56V batteries work across its outdoor equipment. The configurations were marked “Coming Soon” when checked. Confirm EGO’s current listing.

Greenworks’ official 40V 12-inch shovel listing specifies a 40V 4.0Ah battery and charger, maximum 20-foot throw, up to 120-minute charge time, and three-year limited tool and battery warranty. The page displayed the product as sold out when checked. It also conflicts on depth: feature text says 6 inches, while a later specification field says 4 inches, so confirm the manual or manufacturer rather than relying on either figure. Greenworks says its 40V batteries power over 75 of its outdoor products. Check Greenworks’ official listing.

Snow Joe’s SS10 page describes a compact cordless unit for porches, patios, steps, and sidewalks, with a 10-by-6-inch clearing path, 9.9-pound net weight, and a two-year warranty. These specifications are for the SS10, not the SS11 or SS13 in Bob Vila’s comparison. Review the SS10 product page.
