How wide is a 55-inch TV?
The calculated 16:9 screen is 47.94 inches wide, which rounds to 48 inches. Bezels and the outer housing make the assembled television slightly wider, commonly around 48–49 inches. A TV advertised as “55-inch class” is not guaranteed to measure exactly 55.00 inches diagonally; Sony lists some 55-inch models with a 54.6-inch actual diagonal, for example (Sony BRAVIA 3 II specifications).
For a console or alcove, use the manufacturer’s “width without stand” measurement rather than the screen calculation. A 48-inch opening can be too narrow for a cabinet that is 48.5 or 49 inches wide.

How tall is a 55-inch TV?
The screen itself is approximately 27 inches high. The television body without its feet is often about 27–29 inches high, while a stand commonly adds several inches. Samsung lists its 55-inch S85F at approximately 30.1 inches high with the stand; an LG 55-inch commercial display is approximately 30.7 inches high with its stand.
Check the height with the stand if the TV will sit inside shelving or above a soundbar. For wall mounting, measure the body height and then mark the bracket position, screen center and cable route separately.
How deep is a 55-inch TV?
Depth varies more than width. A thin panel may be roughly 1–3 inches deep without its stand, but the electronics and speaker housing can create thicker sections. The stand determines the front-to-back footprint on furniture and often brings total depth to roughly 9–12 inches.

For examples, Samsung lists the S85F at about 1.6 inches deep without its stand and 9.3 inches with it. LG’s UT560H specification lists about 3.4 inches without the stand and 11.9 inches with it. Treat these as model measurements, not a universal standard.
Why is a 55-inch TV not 55 inches wide?
TV size is the diagonal of the screen, not its horizontal width. A 16:9 screen is a rectangle whose diagonal is the hypotenuse. The dimensions can be calculated as:
Width = diagonal × 16 ÷ √(16² + 9²)Height = diagonal × 9 ÷ √(16² + 9²)

For 55 inches, those calculations produce 47.94 inches by 26.96 inches. They describe the display area only, so they do not include the bezel, rear housing, stand or cable clearance. LG explains the diagonal convention in its TV size guide, while TCL provides the corresponding approximate dimensions for a 55-inch 16:9 display (TCL dimension guide).

Will a 55-inch TV fit on your TV stand?
- Measure overall width: the furniture top should be wider than the TV, with a small margin on each side rather than a zero-clearance fit.
- Check foot spacing: two feet may sit close to the edges and require nearly the full TV width; a central pedestal needs less lateral space.
- Check depth: compare the stand’s usable depth with the TV’s with-stand footprint, including rear cables.
- Confirm load capacity: include the TV’s listed weight and any soundbar or accessory weight.
- Check height: make sure the stand leaves room for a soundbar and does not place the screen behind it.
Manufacturers separate screen, body, stand and mounting measurements. Sony’s dimensions guidance shows why those individual figures matter (Sony product dimensions guide).
How much wall space does a 55-inch TV need?
For a typical 48–49-inch-wide body, reserve at least about 50 inches of horizontal wall space. Plan approximately 31–34 inches of vertical area for the television and practical clearance, depending on whether it is mounted or on furniture. These are planning allowances, not a universal manufacturer requirement.

A wall mount must match the TV’s weight and VESA pattern; screen size alone is not enough. For difficult walls or expensive displays, follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions and consider a qualified installer. Sony recommends dealer or licensed-contractor installation for certain wall-mount arrangements (Sony mounting guidance).

LG’s size guide gives approximately 6.5–8 feet as a broad viewing-distance range for this size category (LG viewing-distance guidance). It is guidance rather than a hard limit. A 4K set can be viewed closer than older 1080p recommendations, and the best position depends on field of view, eyesight, subtitles, gaming and personal comfort.

A 55-inch screen can work in a bedroom or medium living room when the seating distance, wall or console width and screen height are comfortable. In a narrow room, mounting can free furniture space but may make the display feel visually larger.

Shipping and doorway planning
The carton is larger than the assembled TV in every direction. LG lists approximately 55.5 × 33.9 × 8.1 inches for shipping its 55-inch UT560H, compared with 49.0 × 30.7 × 11.9 inches with the stand. Measure doors, stair turns, lift interiors and the route into the room using the boxed dimensions, not the screen size.
