Protect tomato plants in a heatwave by giving them temporary afternoon shade, keeping the root zone evenly moist, and covering the soil with organic mulch. These steps can reduce heat and moisture stress, but they cannot guarantee that flowers will set fruit during prolonged high temperatures. Blossom drop is a common response to heat.
1. Give plants temporary afternoon shade
If your tomatoes have no useful afternoon shade, try 30% shade cloth supported above or beside the plants. University of Maryland Extension describes shade cloth as a way to protect plants from excessive sunlight and reduce the air temperature around them; it identifies 30% black shade cloth as a good balance between heat relief and sufficient light. The University of Delaware Cooperative Extension also says 30% provides adequate cooling for most vegetables, while University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources advises not blocking more than 50% of sunlight. Make the shade temporary heat relief rather than season-long heavy cover. Secure it so it cannot fall onto or crush the foliage, and leave space for airflow and pollinators where feasible. A purchased 30% garden shade cloth is optional; the goal is to reduce the harshest afternoon exposure without depriving tomatoes of needed light.
2. Keep soil moisture steady
Check the soil before watering, especially if leaves curl or droop during the hottest part of the day. Heat can cause temporary curling or wilt, so midday symptoms alone do not prove that the plant is short of water. If the soil is dry, water deeply at soil level around the roots rather than routinely wetting the foliage.

Purdue University Extension gives 1 to 1½ inches of water per week as a general tomato-growing guideline for plant health and fruit quality. It is not a heatwave schedule: rainfall, soil, local weather, and whether a tomato is in a bed or container all affect how often it needs water. Use soil moisture as your guide rather than applying a fixed amount regardless of conditions. For containers and garden beds
- Containers: Check soil more often during hot weather because a container’s conditions differ from an in-ground bed. Water when the soil needs it, aiming to moisten the root zone.
- Garden beds: Check soil moisture before watering and account for rainfall. A soaker hose is an optional way to deliver water at soil level, not a requirement.
3. Mulch the soil around the plants
Spread clean organic material such as straw, leaves, or wood chips over the soil to slow evaporation and moderate soil temperature. UC Agriculture and Natural Resources describes 2–3 inches of organic mulch as a way to reduce soil temperature and moisture loss; University of Maryland and Delaware Extension guidance also supports mulching to conserve moisture. Treat that depth as practical guidance, not a rigid rule for every material or garden. Keep mulch from pressing against the stem. - SIZE: Measures 6.5 feet in width and 10 feet in length (2 meters x 3 meters). you can easily cut it to your desired size and shape to suit your needs
- Protects Plants Effectively: Shade cloth doesn't decrease the amount of sunlight your plants receive throughout the day. It's more than just relocating your plants to a shaded spot. Instead, shade cloth softens the intensity of UV rays, allowing your plants to benefit from sunlight without enduring its full force. By blocking up to 55% of sunlight, our shade cloth provides crucial UV protection, helping to regulate temperature, enhance airflow, and reduce the need for frequent watering
- Long-lasting: Made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE), this mesh is built to last and withstand wear and tear. Its knitted design makes it tough against tears and ensures it stays in great condition over time
- Improved Growing Conditions: By maintaining cooler conditions for plants and soil, shade cloth helps to prolong the growing season for cool-season crops as summer temperatures rise. This solution also prevents crops like tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers from ceasing production during the peak summer heat, it creates a favorable microclimate for plants, which can lead to increased yields and vibrant flowers
- Versatile Applications: Garden Shade Cloth is commonly utilized in various settings, including patios, greenhouses, lawn gardens, poultry houses, succulent plant cultivation, barns, dog houses, swimming pools, car parking areas, and camping sites for shading purposes
4. Avoid sudden swings in soil moisture
Check moisture regularly and water when the root zone needs it rather than letting the soil become very dry and then soaking it as a one-off rescue. Consistent moisture helps limit stress-related fruit problems, but it does not remove heat’s effects on pollination. Purdue Extension notes that temperature extremes cause blossom drop and that blossom-set sprays are not effective when temperatures are too high. No fertilizer, spray, or single tool can guarantee fruit set through sustained heat. Purdue Extension, HO-26: Tomatoes

Heat can interrupt fruit set even when you have cared for the plant well. Penn State Extension says blossom drop occurs if nighttime temperatures rise above 75°F; Delaware Extension also describes high-heat effects on fruit quality. A lost flower is therefore not, by itself, evidence that you have failed or that the plant is dying. Continue checking soil moisture and the plant’s overall condition while the heat persists.
