To protect tomato plants from a cold night, prevent exposure where you can, then cover or shelter them before temperatures fall. Covers can help through a brief frost, but they are not reliable protection in a hard or prolonged freeze. Check your local forecast and typical frost-free date: planting times and cold risks vary by location.
1. Plant after your local frost-free date
Tomatoes are warm-season plants. Wait until after the typical local frost-free date and plant when the soil has warmed. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach advises waiting until after the typical frost-free date for warm-season vegetables, while University of Illinois Extension recommends planting in warm soil soon after the local frost-free date. Planting early can expose tomatoes to cold nights and delay growth. A cover may help with a short cold snap, but it is not a substitute for choosing a suitable planting time.

Frost and a freeze are not quite the same. Frost can form on plant surfaces even when the air is slightly above 32°F; a freeze occurs when air and plant tissue fall below 32°F. See Iowa State University Extension and Outreach’s frost guidance.
2. Cover plants overnight for a brief cold event
Before a forecast frost, cover plants with frost cloth, floating row cover, or a household sheet to trap some heat radiating from the ground and reduce the chance of frost forming on leaves. Anchor the edges so drafts do not blow under the cover. Remove it after temperatures rise above freezing; an ordinary sheet may need to be taken off during the day to let in light and air.

- Optimize Performance: Deploy the covers before sunset to harness residual warmth from the soil. Once morning temperatures rise above freezing, remove the covers to permit sunlight warming. Wet covers should be dried before reuse
Floating row covers are made in different weights and allow air, water, and light through. University of Arizona Cooperative Extension says temperatures beneath a floating cover may be 2–10°F warmer. University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension reported 5–10°F warmer temperatures under row covers and frost protection as low as 28°F in its 2009 guidance. These are source-specific ranges, not guaranteed results: performance depends on material, placement, wind, site, and how long the cold lasts. See the Arizona Cooperative Extension guide and Wisconsin-Madison row-cover guidance.
3. Support the cover so it does not press on foliage
Use hoops, stakes, a tomato cage, or another sturdy support to hold fabric above the leaves. Plastic sheeting should not touch the plants. A cage can help support temporary clear plastic early in the season, but secure the cover against drafts and remove or open it as conditions warm. A floating cover can rest on plants when designed for that use, but supporting it is a practical way to keep heavy or wet material from pressing on tender growth.

- SHADE COVER FROM SUN: The outdoor plant cover is not only for winter freeze protection, you can also use it as garden shade cloth cover or plant shade cover from sun, block certain proportion of sunlight and heat. Additionally, it can be used as a screen barrier to prevent birds, small animals and insects during the growth
- EASY-TO-USE: Secured this plant frost cover with soils, stakes, staples, blocks, stones, sticks or garden hoops to provide sufficient space for your vegetables, flowers, crops and small trees such as tomato, strawberry, blueberry, schinus, kale, citrus, grass, rised bed and potted plants.
4. Choose a cloche or larger shelter for the number of plants
The right shelter depends on how many plants you need to protect and whether you can open it during the day. None is a guarantee against every freeze.
Recommended Free Tools
| Shelter | Best fit | Practical considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Cloche or cardboard box | One plant or a small seedling | A cloche or box gives an individual plant a temporary barrier. Remove or open it as temperatures rise, especially on sunny days. |
| Floating row cover | A short row or several plants | Reusable and permeable to air, water, and light. Anchor the edges; support it if needed to keep fabric from pressing on foliage. |
| Low tunnel or cold frame | A row or a larger planted area | Covers more plants, but needs ventilation. Open or remove the covering on sunny days to prevent damaging heat buildup. |
University of Arizona Cooperative Extension notes that a cardboard box can provide an inexpensive cold shelter. University of Wisconsin-Madison Extension describes cloches such as a clear container with its bottom removed or a water wall as individual-plant shelters, and identifies cold frames and hoop houses as larger-area options. Clear enclosed structures can heat quickly in sunshine, so ventilate them. See Arizona Cooperative Extension and Wisconsin-Madison Extension.

5. Treat mulch and watering as supplemental measures
Black plastic mulch can help warm soil for an early planting, and Illinois Extension recommends it alongside floating row covers for very early plantings. Delay organic mulch until the soil warms in early summer; on cool soil, it can slow tomato growth. University of Illinois Extension’s tomato guidance explains these early-season trade-offs.
Watering before the first frost may help keep soil warmer, according to the University of Wisconsin-Extension tomato guide, but ordinary watering is not a stand-alone guarantee. The guide describes sprinkler irrigation as a specific frost-protection technique: start before the air falls below 32°F and continue until the temperature returns to about 32°F and the ice melts. Do not start this method after temperatures have already dropped below freezing. See the Wisconsin-Extension tomato guide.

Know when a cover is not enough
Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says, “Once temperatures drop below about 28°F, covering is typically no longer effective at preventing cold damage.” It also warns that five or more hours below freezing can cause damage even when temperatures remain above that approximate threshold. Treat 28°F as general guidance, not a rating for every cover or a guarantee of protection.
