A low fence rarely protects tomatoes from squirrels because squirrels climb, jump, and use nearby trees, fences, roofs, and garden supports as access routes. The most reliable approach is layered: cover the plant with securely fastened garden netting, reinforce weak sides with mesh, block the route squirrels are using, and treat repellents or scare devices as temporary supplements rather than guarantees.

1. Cover the tomato plant with sturdy garden netting
For most gardens, a complete physical cover is the best first step. Place fine, sturdy garden netting for squirrels over a tomato cage, hoop frame, or fruit cage. Secure every edge to the soil, raised-bed frame, or container rim, then close openings around stakes, stems, and trellis supports.

A cover works only when it closes the access points. A loose sheet draped over the top can leave a gap at ground level or around the plant’s support, allowing a squirrel to crawl underneath. Use clips, ties, or suitable fasteners to keep the netting closed while still allowing you to water, prune, and harvest.

Choose robust garden or bird netting rather than lightweight decorative mesh. Inspect it frequently for tears, loose edges, and openings created as the tomato grows. Check the enclosure after installation and regularly afterward to ensure wildlife has not become trapped. Netting is a strong deterrent, not a claim that the setup is squirrel-proof.
How to adapt the cover
- Single container: Put a tomato cage or hoop frame over the plant and fasten netting around the base of the container or cage.
- Raised bed: Install removable hoops, PVC supports, or a rigid cage and attach netting so the sides and roof are enclosed.
- Large indeterminate tomato: Use a tall, sturdy cage or trellis before the plant outgrows its support. Indeterminate varieties can exceed ordinary conical cages, making a complete cover difficult to install later.
- Plants beside a tree or fence: Make the enclosure tall enough to prevent easy jumping onto the plant, and inspect nearby access routes as well as the netting itself.
2. Reinforce vulnerable sides with hardware cloth or wire mesh
Hardware cloth or wire mesh is useful when squirrels are reaching through an enclosure, digging beside it, or exploiting a weak lower section. Build it into the sides of a raised-bed enclosure or use it around the lower portion of a tomato cage. For a small plot, a secured mesh enclosure can provide a more durable barrier than fabric alone.
Do not confuse a covered mesh enclosure with a short rabbit fence. A two-foot perimeter fence by itself is unlikely to stop tree squirrels. Squirrels can climb the mesh, so the enclosure generally needs a top, roof, or netted cover as well as secured sides.

3. Block the climbing and jumping route
If the tomatoes are beside a tree, post, fence, or other structure, identify how the squirrels are arriving. A smooth metal collar or baffle can help when the animal is climbing a particular trunk or pole. Extension guidance describes a metal collar about two feet wide, installed roughly six feet above ground, as a way to prevent squirrels from climbing individual trees.
This is a route-specific measure, not a complete tomato-plant barrier. A baffle will not solve the problem if a squirrel can jump from an overhanging branch, roof, fence, neighboring tree, or another support. Trim or manage branches that provide a direct route where practical, and inspect the entire path before deciding that the barrier has failed.
A smooth metal squirrel baffle or tree collar is most useful when the access route is obvious and limited. If there are several possible routes, a fully enclosed netted frame around the tomato is usually the more dependable foundation.
4. Use a labeled hot-pepper repellent carefully
Capsaicin-based or hot-pepper repellents may make tomato plants less attractive to squirrels, but results vary. Their effectiveness can decline when other food is scarce, when rain removes the product, or when squirrels become accustomed to it. Use repellent only as an addition to a physical barrier.

Before buying or applying a hot pepper wax animal repellent, read the product label for the specific crop and application site. Extension guidance cautions that capsaicin products for fruit trees and vegetable crops may be restricted to use before fruit or vegetables are present, or after they have been removed from the plant. Follow the label’s harvest instructions and any stated preharvest interval exactly.
- Never spray an improvised homemade mixture directly onto edible tomatoes unless the product is specifically labeled for that crop and use.
- Do not assume a product labeled for ornamental plants is approved for food crops.
- Reapply only as directed, particularly after heavy rain.
- Keep the physical cover in place even if the repellent appears to work.
Rotating approved repellent products may reduce the chance that squirrels simply become tolerant, but no repellent should be presented as a permanent or universal solution.
5. Remove attractants and vary temporary scare tactics
Make the area around the tomatoes less rewarding. Clean up fallen produce, avoid leaving pet food outdoors, and consider whether a bird feeder is concentrating squirrels beside the garden. In some conflict situations, providing an alternative food source away from the problem area may help redirect activity, but it can also attract more wildlife if poorly managed. It is not a substitute for exclusion.
Visual devices such as flash tape or fake owls may briefly discourage squirrels. Move or rotate them rather than leaving them in one position indefinitely, because squirrels can adapt to stationary scare devices. These tactics are best used while a new enclosure is being installed or alongside netting—not as the main defense.

Choose the right setup for your garden
| Garden situation | Best starting setup | Extra step if squirrels persist |
|---|---|---|
| One container tomato | Tomato cage or hoops covered with secured netting | Close the base tightly and block nearby jump routes |
| Raised bed | Removable hoop or cage frame with a netted roof | Add hardware cloth to lower sides and vulnerable seams |
| Large indeterminate plants | Tall, sturdy trellis or cage with enough height for a complete cover | Rebuild or extend the frame before stems grow beyond the enclosure |
| Plants beside trees or fences | Fully enclosed netting plus a route inspection | Add a smooth metal barrier to the specific trunk or post if alternate jumps are blocked |
How to troubleshoot a failed enclosure
- Look for an opening, not just damage to the fruit. Check the base, corners, seams, cage openings, and places where stems or trellis components pass through.
- Check the roof. If the sides are secure but the top is open, a climbing squirrel may simply enter from above.
- Inspect the surroundings. Identify branches, fences, roofs, posts, and neighboring structures that provide a launch point.
- Repair tears promptly. A small hole can become the new entry point as the netting moves or the plant grows.
- Review attractants. Remove fallen tomatoes and accessible pet food, and reconsider feeder placement.
- Add only a labeled supplement. If the barrier is sound, consider a properly labeled repellent or a rotating visual deterrent rather than abandoning the enclosure.
What not to rely on
There is no universally reliable list of squirrel-repellent plants, scent, ultrasonic device, or visual scare tactic. These methods may produce short-term changes, but extension guidance places physical exclusion ahead of repellents and emphasizes that repellents can require repeated applications and still provide incomplete control.
Identify the animal before choosing a barrier. Tree squirrels, ground squirrels, rabbits, birds, and raccoons do not use gardens in exactly the same way, and wildlife-control, trapping, and relocation rules vary by state and municipality. Avoid toxicants and improvised pesticides. If trapping becomes necessary, contact local wildlife authorities or a licensed wildlife professional; relocating an animal may be illegal or ecologically harmful in some places.
The practical bottom line
Start with a sturdy cover: give the tomato a tall cage or frame, enclose it with garden netting, and secure every edge. Add hardware cloth where animals are reaching through or digging, then block any identifiable tree or post route with a smooth metal barrier. Use labeled capsaicin repellent, cleanup, and rotating scare devices only as supporting measures. The realistic goal is not to make the property squirrel-free; it is to make the tomatoes harder to reach than the squirrels’ other available food.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will a short fence keep squirrels away from tomato plants?
A low fence usually will not stop tree squirrels because they can climb and jump. Use a roofed or fully enclosed netting setup, and secure the bottom, corners, seams, and openings around supports.

Do squirrel baffles work around tomato plants?
Yes, if the baffle is installed on the route the squirrel is using and alternate routes are blocked. A smooth metal collar does not protect a plant that can be reached from a branch, fence, roof, or neighboring structure.
Can I spray hot-pepper repellent on tomatoes?
Only use a product whose label specifically allows application to the crop and site. Follow its harvest directions and preharvest interval, and never apply an unapproved homemade mixture directly to edible tomatoes.
What should I check if squirrels are still getting into a tomato enclosure?
Inspect the enclosure for tears and gaps, especially at the base, corners, roof, seams, and around stakes or trellis supports. Then check nearby trees, fences, roofs, and posts for jumping routes.
The Bottom Line
Best overall solution: Enclose the tomato plant or bed completely with securely fastened garden netting, reinforce weak lower sections with hardware cloth, and inspect nearby trees and structures for jumping routes. Repellents and scare devices can supplement the barrier, but none is reliably squirrel-proof on its own.
