Prevent powdery mildew by choosing a locally suitable resistant apple cultivar, checking young growth often, removing infected shoot tips early when practical, and using a fungicide only as a preventive treatment timed to local guidance and the product label. The fungus can survive inside infected buds, so catching disease as new growth emerges is important.
1. Choose a resistant cultivar when planting
Resistance can reduce the risk of powdery mildew, but it does not guarantee a disease-free tree. Oregon State University Extension lists Pristine and Enterprise as examples of apple cultivars resistant to powdery mildew: Managing Diseases and Insects in Home Orchards.
Before buying, ask a local nursery or extension service whether a cultivar is suited to your climate and available locally. Consider fruit qualities and other local growing needs alongside disease resistance; no single cultivar is established as the best choice for every region.
2. Recognize symptoms and inspect new growth
Apple powdery mildew is caused by the fungus Podosphaera leucotricha. It overwinters as fungal growth in infected buds. When those buds open, spores spread to tender new leaves and shoots, and can also infect fruit.

Check new growth regularly, especially as buds open and shoots begin to extend. Look for:
- White to gray powdery growth on young leaves or shoots.
- Leaves that curl or become distorted, and shoots that grow poorly.
- Buds that open abnormally or later than expected.
- Netlike russeting on fruit following early infection.
Windblown spores can infect new growth without free water on the plant. Penn State Extension describes powdery mildew as a dry-weather disease; it reports infection is favored around 65–80°F with high relative humidity: Apple Disease—Powdery Mildew. Those conditions are useful context for monitoring, not a universal spray trigger.

3. Remove infected shoot tips early when practical
For home plantings, Penn State Extension advises pruning white, infected terminals as they appear from bloom to mid-June and removing the prunings from the orchard. This can reduce visible sources of infection, but it is practical garden guidance, not a guarantee that the disease will be controlled.
Do not assume dormant-season pruning of every infected bud is an effective commercial control. Utah State University Extension says that practice has not proven effective and is not recommended in commercial orchards: Apple Powdery Mildew.

4. Time preventive treatment to susceptible growth
Because the fungus persists in infected buds and spreads from emerging growth, treatment timing matters. Penn State recommends beginning mildew sprays at tight cluster when disease is severe, then continuing until new shoots stop growing or about the fourth cover spray. This is regional extension guidance, not a calendar that applies everywhere.
Use current local extension recommendations to determine whether treatment is warranted and which growth stages matter in your area. A fixed date can miss the susceptible growth window because weather and tree development vary.

5. Check the fungicide label and local recommendations
Fungicides are preventive: they do not cure tissue already infected with powdery mildew. If you use one, confirm that the product is labeled for apple trees and follow its directions for timing, application, and safety. Oregon State University Extension’s Eastern Oregon schedule includes sulfur among powdery mildew options for apples: Eastern Oregon Tree Fruit and Nut Pest Management Guide. That regional listing does not establish that sulfur, or any particular product, is appropriate everywhere.
Product labels and local guidance should determine whether a treatment fits your tree, conditions, and intended use. Regional schedules and product availability can differ.
