1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart with physical removal and exclusion. It is quicker, lower-risk, and more durable than reaching first for a spray. These five actions reduce the spiders you see now and make your home less inviting to the next ones.
Spiders are easier to reduce when you remove what is already there, take away their hiding places and insect food, then seal the routes they use to get in. No five-step routine can guarantee a permanently spider-free home—most spiders are beneficial predators and complete elimination is impractical—but these measures can quickly lower activity and help prevent repeat visits.

1. Remove spiders, webs, and egg sacs immediately
Start with the visible evidence. Vacuum or sweep webs from ceiling corners, window frames, closets, basements, garages, crawlspaces, behind furniture, and other quiet, undisturbed areas. Vacuum up visible spiders where practical, and remove and destroy egg sacs as you find them.
For a single spider, a container-and-card capture method can work too. Wear gloves when working around an unfamiliar spider, especially in storage areas, woodpiles, sheds, or places where hands cannot clearly see first. This is removal, not a guarantee that hidden spiders or eggs have been eliminated, so follow it with the prevention steps below.

2. Set sticky traps where spiders travel
Place indoor spider sticky traps along walls and baseboards, under furniture or appliances, and in quiet spaces such as closets, utility rooms, basements, garages, and storage areas. Spiders commonly move along edges rather than across open rooms, so fold or position the trap so it sits firmly against the baseboard.
Glue boards do two useful jobs: they can capture wandering spiders and reveal where activity is concentrated. Check them regularly. A cluster of catches near one door, window, utility penetration, or storage area gives you a practical place to inspect for gaps, clutter, or insects.
3. Remove the shelter—and the insects spiders are eating
Spiders favor secluded places to rest, hide, and lay eggs. Reduce those spaces by clearing out unnecessary paper, shopping bags, cardboard boxes, stacked materials, and other clutter. Use sealed plastic bins for items that must stay in storage, and avoid leaving boxes directly against walls when possible.
Then look for the food source. Spiders stay where insects are available. Vacuuming removes some insect prey as well as webbing; checking webs for trapped insects can also point to the problem. If spiders keep returning, address the flies, ants, pantry pests, or other insects that are feeding them—not just the spiders themselves.
Rank #2
- CATCH SPIDERS WHERE THEY HIDE: Spiders hide by day and hunt at night. These brown recluse spider traps wait along baseboards, behind furniture and in closets, and catch wolf and house spiders
- STOP ROACHES AND CRICKETS: One pack works as roach traps and cricket traps. Cockroaches, crickets, silverfish and earwigs walk onto the glue and stay there. Set a roach trap under the sink and behind the fridge
- PEEL, STICK AND CATCH ANYWHERE: Spiders don't stay on the floor, and this glue trap doesn't have to. Peel the back strip to stick these spider glue traps on a wall, baseboard or ceiling, right where webs form
- READY TO USE, NO BAIT NEEDED: Nothing to mix, spray or refill. Pull off the release paper and these pesticide-free glue traps for bugs start working. Fold one into a tunnel to keep dust off the glue
- PROTECT EVERY ROOM PESTS CRAWL: Bugs follow walls through the house. Put sticky bug traps in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements and garages, and slide insect glue traps under beds
4. Seal entry points and tidy the perimeter
Exclusion is the most durable part of the job. Inspect the building envelope with special attention to ground-level openings and places where materials meet.
- Repair torn, loose, or poorly fitting window screens.
- Caulk cracks and gaps at the foundation, exterior doors, and ground-level windows.
- Adjust or replace exterior door sweeps so they contact the threshold/ground and the sides of the doorway as intended.
- Add or renew weatherstripping around doors and windows where daylight or drafts are visible.
- Inspect penetrations for pipes, wiring, vents, and utility lines; seal appropriate gaps with a compatible material.
Outside, move firewood, boards, rock piles, compost, and other sheltering debris away from the house. Trim plants that touch the siding and keep nearby grass and weeds short. The goal is not a sterile yard; it is to reduce sheltered staging areas next to entry points.
5. Escalate to a targeted, label-approved treatment only if needed
If substantial activity continues after cleaning, trapping, prey reduction, and exclusion, consider a pesticide specifically labeled for spiders and for the exact site you plan to treat—such as a listed indoor crack-and-crevice location or an exterior perimeter location. Apply only as the full label directs, focusing on cracks, gaps, and established hiding places rather than broadly spraying rooms or the yard.

Integrated pest management puts monitoring, prevention, and lower-risk physical controls ahead of pesticide use. That approach is especially sensible around children, pets, and non-target wildlife. The product label is the controlling safety document for where, how, and whether a pesticide may be used.
Skip these common dead ends
- Total-release foggers (“bug bombs”): They generally have little effect on spiders, which often shelter in cracks, voids, and other places the fog does not reach.
- Indiscriminate broadcast spraying: It is a poor first response and adds unnecessary exposure without solving access, shelter, or prey problems.
- Osage oranges/hedge apples: They are not an effective spider-control remedy.
When a spider concern is more than a nuisance
This guidance on medically important species is U.S.-specific. In the United States, black widows and brown recluses are among the spiders of medical concern. Black widows are most common in southern and western states; brown recluses occur in parts of the Midwest and South. Their geographic ranges matter, so do not identify a spider—or make a control decision—from one visual feature alone.
Most spiders are not aggressive. Bites commonly occur when a spider is trapped against skin or touched, so do not reach into dark, undisturbed spaces without gloves and do not handle an unfamiliar spider. If a bite is suspected, wash the area with soap and water and use a cold cloth or ice for swelling. Seek medical assessment promptly for worsening pain or swelling, whole-body symptoms, or a suspected black widow or brown recluse bite.

- Non-toxic and pesticide-free
Do not assume that an alarming skin lesion is a spider bite. Reported spider bites are often uncertain, and infections or other wounds can be mistaken for them.
Know when to call a professional
Call a licensed pest-control professional when you have a confirmed black widow or brown recluse infestation, cannot safely identify or reach the problem area, or still have persistent activity after cleaning, trapping, and exclusion. A local Extension service can also help with regionally appropriate identification and prevention advice.

Can I get rid of every spider in my house permanently?
No. Most homes cannot be made permanently spider-free, but regular removal, prey control, exclusion, and monitoring can substantially reduce activity and repeat visits.

Where should I put indoor spider sticky traps?
Place them along walls and baseboards, beneath furniture or appliances, and in quiet areas such as closets, basements, garages, and utility rooms. Keep them inaccessible to children and pets.
Will a bug bomb get rid of spiders?
Not usually. Total-release foggers have little effect on spiders hiding in cracks, voids, and other protected areas. Physical removal and sealing entry points are more useful first steps.
When should I seek care for a suspected spider bite?
Seek medical assessment for worsening pain or swelling, whole-body symptoms, or concern that the spider was a black widow or brown recluse. Do not diagnose a serious-looking skin lesion as a spider bite without medical guidance.
The Bottom Line
For fast, lasting spider reduction, vacuum webs and egg sacs, use glue boards to locate activity, remove clutter and insect prey, seal entry points, and reserve labeled pesticides for targeted escalation.
