Used with alerts, controls and disciplined operating procedures, that visibility can help operators tune cooling to real heat demand, find developing problems earlier, plan rack capacity and measure energy performance. Analytics alone does not guarantee savings or uptime: results depend on sensor placement, data quality, integration, commissioning, facility design and safe operating limits.
What building monitoring analytics can see
A useful monitoring program connects facility conditions with IT load instead of relying on a single room-temperature reading. ENERGY STAR identifies temperature, input power, utilization, server-inlet temperature and airflow as data-center variables that instrumentation can monitor. Rack-level or inlet-level measurements can expose hot spots that a room average hides.
| Data collected | What it can reveal | Operational decision it supports |
|---|---|---|
| Server-inlet and room temperature | Hot spots, drifting conditions and approach to safe limits | Adjust airflow, cooling capacity or IT load before conditions worsen |
| Humidity and airflow | Uneven distribution, bypass airflow and containment problems | Correct placement, containment or fan settings |
| Rack, PDU and outlet current | Loaded circuits, unused equipment, power surges and remaining capacity | Balance loads, remove idle equipment and plan racks or circuits |
| IT utilization and input power | Actual heat and electrical demand over time | Match cooling and capacity plans to real workloads |
| Events and trends | Repeating excursions, failed devices and gradual degradation | Prioritize maintenance and verify whether corrective actions worked |
The value comes from connecting these measurements to actionable alerts, building-management or DCIM integrations, and—where properly commissioned—automatic control.
1. See conditions where equipment actually operates
Room-level averages can look acceptable while a particular rack or server inlet is running warmer than intended. Distributed temperature, humidity and airflow sensors provide the local context operators need. Smart PDUs add electrical visibility at the rack or outlet rather than stopping at a room or panel total.

Why finer granularity matters
- Rack and inlet readings reveal localized hot spots and uneven airflow.
- Outlet measurements show which devices are consuming power and which circuits are approaching their limits.
- Time-series data distinguishes a brief excursion from a persistent trend.
Placement and calibration determine whether the data is trustworthy. Sensors should be positioned to represent server inlets, aisles and relevant power paths, then checked against the facility’s monitoring system and operating limits.
2. Match cooling and airflow to real heat loads
Cooling demand changes with IT utilization, workload placement, outdoor conditions and equipment additions. Sensor-informed controls can adjust cooling capacity and airflow as those conditions change, helping avoid both wasteful overcooling and unsafe undercooling.

How the control loop works
- Measure server-inlet temperatures, airflow, utilization and electrical load.
- Compare readings with approved environmental and capacity limits.
- Coordinate cooling units and airflow devices through the building-management or DCIM layer.
- Apply a change, then verify that temperatures remain stable across the affected racks.
Centralized controls can prevent cooling units from working against one another and can shift load toward units operating more efficiently. Automatic adjustment should be introduced only after commissioning, alarm testing and confirmation that fail-safe behavior preserves equipment-safe conditions.
What published estimates do—and do not—show
- ENERGY STAR cites a potential reduction of up to 30% in overall energy costs from right-sizing infrastructure with DCIM. It is an attributed potential, not a guaranteed result.
- ENERGY STAR relays an Emerson Network Power study reporting a 20% reduction in cooling-system energy consumption after a 10°F cold-aisle increase. The study year and original report are not stated on the accessed ENERGY STAR page, so the figure should not be generalized without checking the original conditions.
- DOE airflow guidance, as reported by ENERGY STAR, estimates 20%–25% lower fan energy when hot-aisle/cold-aisle arrangements are combined with containment. The estimate’s publication year is not stated on the accessed page.
3. Spot developing problems sooner
Analytics turns raw readings into notifications when conditions leave a normal range or move toward a limit. A rising server-inlet temperature, an abnormal PDU current, a power-supply event or a circuit nearing capacity can reach an operator before it becomes a service-affecting incident.

Design alerts for response, not alarm volume
- Set warning and critical thresholds that reflect the site’s approved operating envelope.
- Use rate-of-change alerts for a fast temperature rise, not only an absolute threshold.
- Correlate temperature, airflow and power events so one underlying problem does not create dozens of disconnected alarms.
- Record acknowledgement, action and resolution in the event history.
Smart PDU systems may provide real-time current readings, event logs, power trends, equipment alerts, capacity alerts and, on some models, remote outlet switching. Remote switching should be governed by change-control and safety procedures. Earlier awareness improves response time; it does not prove that every equipment failure will be prevented.
4. Make power, space and capacity decisions with evidence
Outlet- and rack-level power trends show where electrical capacity is being consumed and where installed equipment is underused. Combined with utilization and asset records, that evidence supports practical decisions about moves, decommissioning, circuit balancing and future rack density.

Questions the data can answer
- Which racks are close to their design or circuit limit?
- Which outlets or devices draw little or no power over an approved observation period?
- Will a proposed equipment move overload a circuit or exceed cooling capacity?
- How much headroom remains for a new row, rack or workload?
Use measured demand together with nameplate ratings, redundancy requirements and planned growth. A low current reading does not by itself prove that equipment can be removed, and a high reading does not by itself justify reducing resilience margins.

For a meaningful comparison, document the PUE measurement boundary, time period, meter locations and any exclusions. PUE is an efficiency ratio, not a complete score for reliability, server utilization, carbon impact or water use. A lower PUE can coexist with poor resilience or underused IT equipment.
Use a baseline-and-verification cycle
- Choose a representative baseline period and record facility and IT-energy meters.
- Document changes to cooling setpoints, containment, controls, workloads and equipment.
- Apply the intervention with alarms and safe limits in place.
- Compare like-for-like periods and investigate weather, occupancy and workload differences.
- Keep the result with its measurement boundary and assumptions so future teams do not treat it as a universal benchmark.
Examples that need careful qualification
- ENERGY STAR cites a Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory case in which 50 wireless temperature sensors and intelligent-control software were installed at a 10,000-square-foot Franchise Tax Board data center. The reported first-year energy savings were $30,564, system cost was $56,824 and payback was under two years. The accessed ENERGY STAR page does not state the case-study year; this is a historical example, not a forecast.
- The U.S. Department of Energy describes data centers as using 10 to 50 times the energy per floor area of a typical commercial office. The accessed DOE overview is older and does not state a year in the supplied material, so current comparisons should be checked against the latest DOE information.
Turning analytics into a dependable operating capability
Choose coverage before choosing a platform
Define whether the first phase needs temperature, humidity, airflow, utilization, rack power or outlet power, and decide the required granularity. Then check alert history, reporting, scalability across rooms and sites, and integration with existing building-management and DCIM systems.
Separate monitoring from automatic control
A platform may only display data, or it may issue recommendations and control cooling equipment. Treat those as different risk levels. Monitoring can start with read-only access; closed-loop control requires tested sequences, permissions, fail-safe states, maintenance procedures and commissioning.
Plan for operations and security
- Set ownership for alarm response and data quality.
- Synchronize timestamps and retain enough history to identify trends.
- Protect sensor, PDU and control networks with appropriate access controls and change management.
- Recalibrate or replace sensors when readings drift, and review alert thresholds after facility changes.
The strongest business case is therefore not “install analytics and save a fixed percentage.” It is a measured operating process: observe conditions at the equipment, act within safe limits, verify the result and use the evidence for the next capacity or efficiency decision.
