Air drying is simple but takes weeks; silica gel is faster and better suited to delicate shapes. Glycerin is primarily for foliage, not whole flowers.
Choose a method by the finished look
| Technique | Result | Typical timing | Useful for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Air drying | Three-dimensional, dried blooms | About two to three weeks, per University of Illinois Extension | Simple, low-cost wreath and arrangement materials |
| Silica gel | Three-dimensional blooms; can help retain shape and color | About three to seven days, per Iowa State University Extension’s 1998 guide; its 1996 guide estimates three to eight days depending on flower thickness | Delicate flowers when appearance matters |
| Pressing | Flat flowers and foliage | Not stated in the cited extension guidance; allow them to dry fully before use | Framing and paper crafts |
| Glycerin | Pliable, lifelike foliage | Not stated in the cited extension guidance | Leaves rather than whole flowers |
These are drying estimates, not guarantees: flower type, thickness, harvest stage, and conditions affect results. Preserved flowers can work in seasonal designs; the University of Maine Cooperative Extension describes dried flowers in a traditional balsam Christmas wreath, but does not establish a specific lifespan for the decorations.
1. Air dry small bunches for a simple dimensional result
Air drying needs little equipment and suits anyone who can wait. Flowers may shrink or lose color, so this is not the best choice when retaining a bloom’s fresh appearance is the priority. Illinois Extension gives two to three weeks as a general estimate.
- Remove unwanted leaves from the stems.
- Gather stems into small bunches and secure them with a tie or rubber band.
- Hang the bunches upside down in a warm, dry, dark, well-ventilated place.
- Leave them until dry, checking that air can circulate around the bunches.
Keep blooms out of direct sunlight, which can fade them. Iowa State University Extension and Illinois Extension describe air drying as a straightforward approach, but the result varies by flower.

2. Use silica gel when shape matters
Silica gel is a desiccant that can dry delicate flowers while helping them retain their shape and color. Use a dedicated, non-food container with an airtight lid during drying. Iowa State University Extension estimates about three to seven days in its 1998 guide; its 1996 guide gives three to eight days and notes that flower thickness affects the time.
- Choose a clean, non-food container with an airtight lid.
- Follow the silica-gel product’s directions for placing and covering the flowers.
- Close the container while the flowers dry, then check them according to the product guidance rather than assuming a fixed finish date.
- Handle dried blooms gently and store them dry.
Silica gel can be reused after it is dried or recharged according to its product instructions. Iowa State Extension discusses reuse; follow the specific product’s safety directions. This method requires flower-drying silica gel, unlike air drying or book pressing.

- All in One Kit: Package includes high-quality 5lbs silica gel flower drying, an airtight container, a brush, and a user manual. The flower drying silica is stored in double sealed bags for long-term preservation and protection, ensuring the product arrives in the best condition
- Fine Crystals Less Than 1mm: Lightweight silica gel for drying flowers puts less pressure on fresh flowers, making it easier to reach between the petals. Flowers can be dried in 3-6 days, maintaining their natural shape, preserving their vibrant colors with minimal discoloration
- Safe and Non-toxic Formula: Unlike blue silica sand, Viktairy orange flower drying silica gel crystals are Cocl2-free, dust-treated, and odorless. They absorb moisture naturally without relying on chemical reactions
- Color Indicating Technology: Flower drying preservation kit contains 10% orange crystals and 90% clear crystals. When the orange crystals absorb moisture, they turn dark green, indicating that the silica sand is saturated and needs to be recharged
- Rechargeable and Reusable: To reactivate the saturated silica gel beads, spread it evenly on a baking pan to form a thin layer. Place it in an oven at 200-250F for 0.5 to 1 hour, or microwave it for about 10 minutes at 700w until all green crystals turn orange again
3. Press flowers for flat decorations
Pressing is for a different outcome: flat blooms and foliage for framed displays, cards, or paper decorations. Flat flowers such as pansies are suitable examples in extension guidance. A heavy book can work; a dedicated wooden flower press is optional.
- Place flowers between absorbent paper layers.
- Set the layers inside a heavy book or a flower press, arranging them so they lie flat.
- Apply even pressure and leave the flowers until fully dry.
- Lift the dried material carefully before using it in a frame or paper craft.
Very fleshy or very thin-petaled flowers may not produce equally good results. Purdue and Illinois Extension describe pressing as a way to preserve plant material for flat decorative uses.

4. Preserve foliage with glycerin
Glycerin belongs in a foliage plan, not as a general whole-flower technique. Illinois Extension identifies it for preserving leaves so they can remain pliable and lifelike. The cited guidance does not provide a complete flower-specific glycerin procedure, so use directions intended for the particular product and foliage rather than improvising a recipe.

Once flowers are dry, work them into a seasonal design that suits their form: use dimensional air-dried or silica-gel blooms in arrangements and wreaths, and reserve pressed pieces for flat displays or paper details. The University of Maine Cooperative Extension specifically notes dried flowers in a traditional balsam Christmas wreath. That example supports the use, not a promised number of months or years of decoration life.
