If your zucchini has flowers but no harvest, first check whether female flowers have appeared. A young plant may produce male flowers for a week or two before female flowers arrive; that is often normal. If a female flower opens and the tiny zucchini behind it shrivels, poor pollination is one likely cause, though weather, moisture, growing conditions, or pests may also be involved.
How to tell whether the problem is missing female flowers or failed fruit set
Zucchini plants produce separate male and female flowers on the same vine. Look at the base of each flower:

- Male flower: It sits on a thin stem with no swelling beneath the petals. It commonly appears first, and it naturally drops after blooming.
- Female flower: A tiny squash-shaped swelling—the ovary—is visible behind the flower. If it is pollinated, that small fruit can grow.
Male flowers may appear one to two weeks before female flowers, according to University of Maryland Extension; the timing varies. A male flower falling off is not, on its own, a sign that the plant is unhealthy.

Five reasons zucchini may not produce fruit
1. The plant has produced only male flowers so far
If you cannot find a small squash behind any flower, the plant may simply be at the beginning of its flowering period. Give it time to develop female flowers while checking that it has suitable light and is otherwise growing well. A plant that is young or stressed may also not yet be ready to bear.

2. Female flowers are not being pollinated
Bees and other pollinators carry pollen from male flowers to female flowers. With too few pollinators, a female flower may fail to set fruit, or the tiny fruit may begin growing and then shrivel. Rain or cold can limit pollinator activity. Kansas State University horticulture expert Matt McKernan explains: “If few to no pollinators are present, vegetables with separate male and female flowers may not produce fruit due to lack of pollination.”
Hand-pollination is both a possible remedy and a useful way to check whether pollination is the issue:

- Choose an open female flower and an open male flower. They need to be open at the same time.
- Pick the male flower and gently touch its pollen-bearing center to the center of the female flower, or use a small paintbrush to transfer pollen.
- Mark the female flower and watch the tiny fruit behind it. Compare its progress with fruits on flowers left to natural pollination.
If the marked fruit develops, that supports pollination as a factor, but it does not guarantee that every fruit will set.

Rain can reduce pollinator activity, while high temperatures can make vegetables drop blossoms prematurely, according to Kansas State University Extension. The tomato-specific temperature threshold sometimes cited in this context should not be treated as a zucchini threshold.

Keep soil moisture reasonably even, especially during hot, dry weather and as fruit begins to form. Water deeply at the base of the plant, adjusting to your soil and local conditions rather than following a rigid calendar. Both too much and too little water can harm roots and interfere with water uptake.
4. The plant has too little sun or too much nitrogen
Zucchini needs a sunny growing site. Maryland Extension defines full sun as at least six hours of direct light and says zucchini prefers eight to ten hours. A shaded plant may struggle to flower and fruit well.

Excess nitrogen can encourage vigorous leafy growth at the expense of flowers and fruit. If the vine is already lush, adding more fertilizer may worsen the imbalance. Follow local soil and fertilizer guidance instead of applying extra nitrogen as a default fix.

Inspect the plant if the whole vine wilts or its leaves turn brown and die. Squash vine borers and squash bugs can damage plants; look for signs on stems and leaves rather than assuming every failed fruit is a pollination problem.

Also note where a fruit is deteriorating. A young zucchini that starts growing and then shrivels is consistent with poor pollination. Rot that begins at the blossom end may have a different cause. Iowa State University Extension says blossom-end rot is associated with uneven moisture and excess nitrogen affecting calcium uptake, and that additional calcium is usually unnecessary. See Iowa State’s guidance on growing squash.

- Check flower bases. A thin stem means a male flower; a small squash at the base means a female flower.
- If you see only male flowers, wait. Early male-only flowering can be normal. Check the plant’s light and general health while female flowers develop.
- If female flowers open but fruit fails, check pollinator activity and recent weather. Try hand-pollinating and marking one open female flower to see whether it develops.
- Keep moisture reasonably even and avoid excess fertilizer. Water at the base in response to soil conditions, and do not add nitrogen simply because fruit is missing.
- Inspect for pests if the vine is wilting or dying. Look over the stems and leaves for damage rather than treating the symptom as a pollination issue.
- Protect pollinators. Do not spray insecticides on blooming plants.
How to prevent repeat problems
Encourage pollinator access to flowering zucchini and avoid insecticide sprays while flowers are blooming. For future plantings, Maryland Extension notes that parthenocarpic cultivars can set fruit without pollination. Its guidance says these cultivars may be grown under netting to exclude certain pests. Ordinary zucchini varieties need insects to reach their flowers, so remove netting when they bloom.
Choose a sunny site, keep soil moisture as even as practical, and use fertilizer according to local soil guidance. These steps support plant health, but they cannot guarantee fruit set in every weather or growing condition.
