5 Reasons You Suddenly Have Gnats in Your House—and How to Find the Source

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The most likely reason you suddenly have gnats is that an adult fly has found a damp, decaying, or fermenting place to reproduce inside or near your home. “Gnat” is a household term, not a precise insect identification. The flies may be fungus gnats from houseplant soil, fruit flies from fermenting food, drain flies from organic buildup inside a drain, or small flies emerging from hidden moisture and decay.

That distinction matters because traps only remove adults. To stop the infestation, find and eliminate the breeding material—usually wet potting soil, food residue, drain film, a plumbing leak, or another damp organic source.

First, identify where the gnats are gathering

Before spraying anything, note the room, surface, appearance, and flight behavior. Small flies can look similar, but their location often reveals the source.

Where you see them Most likely culprit Useful clues Best first step
Potting soil, plant shelves, or windows near plants Fungus gnats Slender, dark, delicate, mosquito-like flies; activity often increases after watering Reduce excess soil moisture and inspect the plant’s drainage
Fruit bowl, recycling, wine, juice, trash, or compost Fruit flies Tiny tan or brown flies, often with noticeable red eyes; concentrated in the kitchen Remove fermenting food and clean liquid and food residues
Sink, bathroom, floor drain, or utility drain Drain or moth flies Fuzzy or hairy appearance, moth-like wings, weak flight, often resting on nearby surfaces Find the active drain and scrub away its organic film
Windows, doors, garage, crawlspace, or a damp wall Outdoor-entry or concealed-moisture flies Recurring activity without an obvious plant, food, or drain source Find the moisture or entry point, then repair and dry it

Appearance alone is not always enough for a confident identification. Location, behavior, and the material where the larvae are developing are more useful than the word “gnat.”

1. A houseplant is being overwatered

Fungus gnats are the classic indoor “gnat” found around houseplants. Their larvae live in moist potting soil and feed mainly on fungi and decaying organic material. They may also damage roots when populations are large or the infestation lasts a long time.

Adult fungus gnats are usually more nuisance than serious plant pest, but their presence often signals a plant container that stays too wet. Poor drainage, compacted potting mix, standing water in a saucer, or frequent watering can create the conditions they need.

Clues that point to fungus gnats

  • Dark, slender flies rest on leaves, pot rims, nearby walls, or windows.
  • They appear in greater numbers after watering.
  • Most activity is around one plant shelf or group of containers.
  • Yellow sticky cards positioned near the soil catch the adults.

What to do

  1. Let the soil surface dry as much as the particular plant can tolerate.
  2. Check that the container has an unobstructed drainage hole.
  3. Empty saucers and cachepots; do not leave the pot standing in water.
  4. Remove fallen leaves and other decaying material from the soil.
  5. Move the affected plant away from other houseplants while you monitor it.
  6. Use yellow sticky traps for fungus gnats near the soil to monitor and reduce adult flies.

Sticky traps are useful, but they do not kill eggs or larvae in the potting mix. If the soil remains wet, new adults can continue emerging after the trap catches the first group.

2. A new plant, seasonal plant, or bag of potting mix brought them indoors

A sudden outbreak often follows the arrival of a new houseplant, a seasonal plant moved indoors, repotting, or an outdoor container brought inside for winter. Fungus gnats can already be present in the growing medium. Once adults emerge, they may move to nearby pots and establish in several containers.

This is why a plant that looks healthy can still be the source. The adults are easy to miss when there are only a few, and the larvae remain hidden in the soil.

Clues that point to an introduced source

  • The flies appeared within days or weeks of buying, repotting, or moving a plant.
  • Adults are concentrated around one new plant or plant shelf.
  • Several pots become affected after the original plant was brought inside.

What to do

  • Inspect every new plant, including the soil surface, drainage holes, saucer, and dead leaves.
  • Keep new plants separate from established houseplants for one to two weeks while watching for adults.
  • Use clean containers when repotting.
  • Choose fresh, sterile potting mix rather than reusing old, contaminated soil.
  • For severe infestations, consider sterile indoor potting soil and a clean houseplant pot with drainage.
  • If repotting is necessary, remove as much old soil from the roots as the plant can safely tolerate and avoid transferring the infested mix to another pot.

Repotting is not always the first or cheapest solution. Correct watering, isolation, and removal of decaying material may be enough when the plant is otherwise healthy and the infestation is small.

3. Overripe food, drinks, recycling, or trash are feeding fruit flies

Fruit flies—also called vinegar or pomace flies—are another common cause of sudden indoor “gnats.” They develop in fermenting or overripe fruit and vegetables, spilled juice, beer or wine residue, soft-drink containers, recycling, compost, and dirty trash containers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They are usually tiny tan or brown flies, roughly 1/16 to 1/8 inch long, and often have conspicuous red eyes. Unlike fungus gnats, they are more likely to hover around food and drink than around potting soil.

Hidden kitchen sources to check

  • Overripe bananas, tomatoes, berries, potatoes, onions, and other produce
  • Liquid or food residue in bottles and cans
  • Sticky areas beneath a fruit bowl or appliance
  • Trash cans, recycling bins, and compost caddies
  • Wine, beer, juice, syrup, or soft-drink residue
  • Dirty mop heads, sponges, and cleaning cloths
  • Food trapped beneath appliances or inside a damaged cabinet
  • Floor drains near the kitchen

What to do

  1. Discard overripe or damaged produce, or refrigerate it temporarily.
  2. Rinse bottles and cans before placing them in recycling.
  3. Empty food-waste containers and wash their interiors and lids.
  4. Clean sticky spills, including areas under appliances and around the trash can.
  5. Wash or replace damp mop heads, sponges, and cloths.
  6. Inspect potatoes, onions, and other produce stored in dark cabinets.
  7. Use a fruit fly vinegar trap or commercial trap only after removing the breeding source.

A vinegar trap can catch adult fruit flies and help reduce visible activity, but it cannot compensate for a forgotten piece of produce or residue inside a container. If flies return each day, continue looking for the source rather than adding more traps.

4. A drain contains a layer of organic buildup

Drain flies, also called moth flies or filter flies, breed in the gelatinous organic film that accumulates inside sink drains, traps, floor drains, sewer lines, and other wet plumbing areas. That film can contain food residue, hair, grease, soap deposits, and other organic material.

Drain flies are small, dark or gray, and often look fuzzy because of their hairy, moth-like wings. They are weak flyers and commonly rest on sinks, bathroom walls, tubs, or nearby surfaces. Activity may be especially noticeable around a rarely used drain or at night.

Hot Shot No-Pest Strip, Kills Flying and Crawling Insects, 1 Pack
  • KILLS: Kills flies, moths, cockroaches, silverfish, spiders and other insects as listed.
  • HANGING STRIP: Just hang up in garages, sheds, storage units, attics and crawl spaces occupied by people less than 4 hours per day.
  • CONTROLLED-RELEASE TECHNOLOGY: Simply remove from package to begin controlling action – keeps protecting for up to 4 months.
  • PENETRATING VAPOR: Clean, odorless, deep-penetrating vapor is distributed throughout the treatment area.
  • USAGE AREA: One strip treats a 10 foot x 13 foot enclosed room with an 8-foot ceiling.

How to test a suspected drain

Temporarily cover or tape a suspect drain, or place a clear container over the outlet, so you can see whether adults appear from that location. Check nearby drains one at a time. This is a diagnostic step—not a permanent repair—and should not block a drain that needs to remain open for safe operation.

What to do

  1. Identify the drain or plumbing fixture associated with the activity.
  2. Remove the drain cover where practical.
  3. Use a stiff brush or drain-cleaning tool to scrub the inside of the drain and trap, physically removing the film.
  4. Flush and rinse according to the fixture and product instructions.
  5. Consider an enzyme- or bacteria-based drain product as a supplemental treatment or maintenance step, following its label.
  6. Clean nearby overflow openings and floor drains, which are easy to overlook.

A drain brush for drain flies paired with an appropriate enzyme drain cleaner can make the cleaning step easier, but the brush and physical removal are the important parts. Simply pouring boiling water, bleach, or chemical drain cleaner into a drain may not remove the protected breeding film and is not a substitute for scrubbing. Never mix drain chemicals.

5. Damp decaying material, a plumbing problem, or an outdoor opening is supplying them

When plants, food, and accessible drains check out, look for concealed moisture or an outdoor source. Small flies may develop in wet garbage, compost, animal waste, rotting organic matter, crawlspaces, wall or floor voids, or moisture-damaged building materials. A plumbing leak, broken drain, sewer connection, or wet area beneath a slab can also support recurring flies.

Some fungus gnats and other small flies may simply enter through doors, windows, screens, or gaps from nearby outdoor sources. However, repeated indoor activity—especially in one utility area—deserves a search for moisture rather than an assumption that every fly came from outside.

Places to inspect

  • Under sinks and around dishwasher, refrigerator, and washing-machine connections
  • Around toilets, tubs, showers, and floor drains
  • Behind appliances and inside utility closets
  • Crawlspaces, basements, garages, and areas beneath floors
  • Wet garbage, compost, leaves, or animal-waste areas
  • Walls, ceilings, or flooring with staining, swelling, peeling, or a persistent damp smell
  • Window screens, door sweeps, vents, cracks, and other exterior openings

What to do

  1. Repair plumbing leaks and eliminate standing water.
  2. Dry wet areas and correct the source of the moisture, not just the visible stain.
  3. Remove decaying organic material and clean garbage or compost areas.
  4. After the source is corrected, repair screens, replace damaged door sweeps, and seal suitable gaps.
  5. If flies continue emerging from beneath flooring, inside walls, a crawlspace, or a broken drain, arrange a professional inspection.

A plant moisture meter can help diagnose persistently wet containers, while window screen repair supplies and a suitable door sweep for insects can support exclusion. These tools help with diagnosis or prevention; they do not eliminate an active hidden breeding site.

A same-day gnat-source checklist

Use this sequence before reaching for an insecticide:

  1. Inspect every houseplant. Check soil surfaces, saucers, drainage holes, dead leaves, and nearby windows.
  2. Check the kitchen. Examine fruit, vegetables, onions, potatoes, compost, recycling, bottles, cans, trash, spills, mop heads, and floor drains.
  3. Test likely drains. Temporarily cover or monitor outlets to determine whether adults are emerging there.
  4. Search for moisture. Look under sinks, near toilets and washing machines, around floor drains, in garages, crawlspaces, and utility areas.
  5. Inspect entry points. Check screens, door sweeps, vents, and gaps after indoor breeding sources have been eliminated.
  6. Remove the source. Dry soil, discard fermenting food, scrub drain film, clean organic residue, or repair the leak.
  7. Monitor for several days. Traps can show whether adult activity is declining, but some adults may continue emerging after the source is corrected.

Why traps alone often fail

Traps catch adult flies, which makes the room look better quickly, but eggs and larvae may still be developing in soil, drains, food residue, or damp organic matter. Once those adults emerge, the population rebounds.

When to call a professional

Consider a licensed pest-management inspection or plumbing/drain-cleaning service when:

  • Flies continue appearing after accessible plants, food sources, and drains have been treated.
  • Adults seem to emerge from beneath flooring, inside walls, a crawlspace, or another inaccessible void.
  • There is a persistent damp smell, water stain, soft flooring, or unexplained moisture.
  • Drain flies return after the visible drain and trap have been mechanically cleaned.
  • You suspect a broken pipe, sewer-line problem, slab leak, or concealed plumbing defect.

A pest professional can help identify the insect and locate a hidden source. A plumber or drain specialist is the more appropriate choice when the evidence points to a failed drain, leak, sewer connection, or inaccessible plumbing.

Safety notes

Fungus gnats and drain flies do not bite people. These insects are generally nuisance pests, although drain flies can develop in contaminated organic material, and large numbers of dead insects may contribute to allergen exposure for sensitive people. That does not mean every indoor gnat problem is dangerous.

Do not use homemade pesticide mixtures as a universal remedy. Un tested or improvised mixtures can harm people, pets, plants, finishes, and plumbing, and may not be legal for the intended pesticide use. If using a pesticide, confirm that the label permits the specific indoor location and target insect, and follow all precautions around food, children, pets, and plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are gnats in the house dangerous?

Most indoor insects called gnats are nuisance pests. Fungus gnats and drain flies do not bite people. Drain flies can develop in contaminated organic matter, so their presence is a reason to clean and correct the source, but it does not mean every infestation is a health emergency.

Why do gnats keep coming back after I use traps?

Traps remove adult flies but usually do not eliminate eggs and larvae. Check for damp plant soil, fermenting food, organic film in drains, leaks, crawlspace moisture, and other concealed breeding material.

How can I tell fungus gnats from fruit flies?

Fungus gnats are usually slender and dark and gather around damp potting soil. Fruit flies are typically tiny tan or brown flies, often with red eyes, and gather around fruit, drinks, recycling, trash, or other fermenting material.

Will bleach or boiling water get rid of drain flies?

Not reliably. Drain flies breed in a protected organic film, so physically scrubbing the drain and trap is the key step. Chemical products may be supplemental only when used according to their labels, and drain chemicals must never be mixed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Sudden gnats usually indicate a newly available breeding site, not a mysterious invasion. Start with the location: damp plant soil suggests fungus gnats, kitchen residue suggests fruit flies, a sink or floor drain suggests drain flies, and recurring activity near utility areas suggests concealed moisture or plumbing. Remove that source first; use traps only to monitor and reduce the adults left behind.
