No plant has been shown to keep skunks out of a garden by itself. Mint, marigolds, lavender, rosemary, and sage can add fragrance, texture, and visual complexity to a garden edge, but they are only supplemental choices. A dependable skunk-control plan relies on a physical barrier, removal of food and shelter, and careful exclusion from denning areas.
Why skunks visit gardens
Skunks are omnivores, so a garden can offer several reasons to visit. They eat grubs and other soil invertebrates, including beetles, grasshoppers, crickets, and cutworms. They may also eat produce, berries, fallen fruit, poultry, or eggs. Although skunks can provide useful pest control, their nighttime foraging can damage lawns and beds.

Unsecured garbage, outdoor pet food, brush or junk piles, accessible spaces beneath sheds and decks, and ripe or fallen fruit can all make a property more attractive. A lawn with abundant grubs may also draw skunks even when the garden itself is well maintained.

Skunk foraging often leaves small, cone-shaped holes or patches of turned soil, commonly around 3 to 4 inches across. That pattern is suggestive, not conclusive. Raccoons, armadillos, rodents, and other wildlife can also disturb soil, so do not assume that every hole is skunk damage.

- TOTAL 30 PANELS, 42.5FT LONGER SIZE - Included 30 panels of fences, total length: 42.5 feet, more fences, and longer lengths can meet more of your needs, including filling the gaps under the bottom of the existing fence, building garden edging border, surrounding the garden bed to avoid plant damage, etc
- EXISTING FENCE GAP FILLER - The gap of the no dig fence is reduced to 1.5 inches, extending the protection of your fence to the ground, which can effectively prevent your dog from digging under the fence and escaping your yard, prevent small animals from visiting your garden and yard, and causing damage to your yard
- STURDY & RUSTPROOF - The animal barrier fence is made of heavy metal welded. The upgraded welding technology improves the stability, durability, and reusability of the fence. The three-layer design ensures that the garden fence panels are not easy to bend and break. The surface has anti-rust coating, not easy to rust, not afraid of bad weather, can be used for a long time
- EASY TO INSTALL - The decorative garden fence is installed by cable tie connection, compared with the snap connect method, which is difficult to install and easy to hurt hands, the cable tie method is safer and more convenient. This set includes gloves to protect your hands and cutting pliers to help you cut off excess cables. The bottom of the garden fence is sharp so that you can easily insert the fences into the ground
- WIDE APPLICATION - You can use these fence panels as a no dig fence barrier to prevent your dog from digging under the fence and escaping from your yard, and also to prevent small animals from breaking into your yard and causing damage. You can also use these fences as animal barrier fences to keep your dogs or small animals away from your flower beds, vegetable gardens, protect your plants. You can also use these fences as garden decorations to add charm, elegant touch to any outdoor space
Look for a combination of clues: fresh nighttime disturbance, several shallow cone-shaped holes, tracks, droppings, or damage near a likely food source. If the evidence is uncertain, identifying the animal before choosing a control method prevents unnecessary pesticide use or an ineffective barrier.
Five plants worth trying as part of a broader plan
The plants below are best understood as attractive, aromatic border plants—not proven skunk repellents. Evidence for scent-based deterrence is generally stronger for some browsing animals or rodents than for skunks specifically.
1. Mint
Mint has a strong aroma and can be useful around a garden edge if you want a fragrant herb. University Extension guidance discusses mint-based repellents for some rodents around homes, vehicles, and gardens, but that does not demonstrate that living mint plants repel skunks.

Best use: Grow mint in containers or confined beds. Many types spread aggressively and can become a larger maintenance problem than the skunks. Treat mint as a possible supplemental scent plant, not as a perimeter that skunks cannot cross.
2. Marigold
Marigold foliage has a distinct odor and is commonly used in companion planting. Some guidance associates marigolds with reduced browsing by deer and rabbits and with certain insect-management practices. Those observations should not be converted into a claim that marigolds keep skunks away.
Best use: Plant marigolds as an easy annual border for full-sun beds and containers. They can make the edge of a garden more colorful and aromatic while a real barrier protects the plants behind them.

3. Lavender
Lavender is a strongly aromatic member of the mint family. It is often included among plants that deer find less appealing, but the reviewed guidance does not establish lavender as a reliable skunk deterrent.
Recommended Free Tools
Best use: Choose a sunny, well-drained location. Lavender is a good supplemental border plant where fragrance and appearance matter, but it should not replace fencing or buried mesh.
4. Rosemary
Rosemary is another aromatic herb suited to warm, sunny, well-drained locations. Its fragrance makes it a reasonable candidate for a garden edge, but there are no skunk-specific trials in the reviewed Extension material showing that rosemary excludes skunks.
Best use: Grow rosemary in the ground where winters permit or use containers and winter protection in colder climates. Think of it as an attractive landscape plant that may complement a skunk-control plan, not solve one.
5. Sage
Sage contributes strong fragrance and useful foliage to a border. Like rosemary and lavender, it belongs to the aromatic group of plants that may make an area less appealing to some wildlife. That broad rationale is not proof that sage keeps skunks out.
Best use: Use sage to add texture and fragrance near a bed, then handle the actual exclusion work with a secured fence, buried mesh, and attractant reduction.

What actually works better than planting
1. Build a barrier that prevents digging
For a garden bed, a physical barrier is more dependable than an aromatic planting. A fence at least 2 feet high can limit skunk movement. The lower edge is crucial: a skunk may simply dig beneath a fence that stops at the soil surface.
For raised beds, seedlings, and small garden perimeters, 1/2-inch galvanized hardware cloth can be formed around the sides and extended below ground. Secure the mesh firmly to posts or the bed frame, close gaps at corners, and bury or bend the bottom section outward so an animal cannot push directly underneath. Decorative edging is not a substitute for a buried wire barrier.
For larger areas, a buried garden fence made from sturdy galvanized welded wire can limit access to the whole perimeter. Extension recommendations vary by site: guidance describes burying fencing roughly 1 to 2 feet for stronger skunk exclusion, while a lower outward-bent apron can also help prevent digging beneath structures. Match the design to the soil, slope, and animal pressure, and inspect it after heavy rain or ground disturbance.

UF/IFAS guidance identifies a single electric wire about 8 inches above the ground as a possible deterrent for skunks and raccoons. Follow local rules, manufacturer instructions, and electrical-safety requirements, and keep the system away from children, pets, and unintended wildlife. A physical barrier remains the more straightforward choice for many household gardens.
2. Remove food and cover
- Keep garbage in tightly sealed containers.
- Bring pet food indoors, particularly overnight.
- Pick up fallen fruit and harvest ripe produce promptly.
- Remove brush, lumber, junk, and other piles that provide cover.
- Repair gaps beneath sheds, decks, porches, and outbuildings—but only after confirming that no animal or young is inside.
Removing attractants is important because a hungry or shelter-seeking skunk may cross a planted border without hesitation. A less attractive property reduces pressure on every other measure.
3. Handle grub-related damage carefully
Skunks commonly dig in turf while searching for grubs and other invertebrates. Grub control may reduce damage when a genuine grub infestation is present, but it should not mean treating every lawn preventively or eliminating all soil life.

First confirm the pest and determine whether its numbers justify treatment. If a pesticide is appropriate, follow the product label and consider risks to people, pets, pollinators, beneficial insects, and other wildlife. Improving turf health and accepting a reasonable amount of natural soil activity may be preferable to blanket insecticide use.

4. Treat commercial repellents and scare devices as temporary experiments
Repellents are not a dependable replacement for exclusion. Guidance from Penn State states that there are no registered repellents for skunks in its material and describes odor repellents as temporary. Utah guidance likewise reports that chemical repellents are not registered for skunks in that state and that scare devices have not been shown effective. Availability and registration can vary by location, so check the label and local rules.
Commercial products may contain ingredients such as capsaicin, garlic, egg solids, castor oil, soap, or predator odors. Results can vary with food availability, habituation, wildlife abundance, weather, and how often the product must be reapplied. A motion-activated sprinkler can be considered a non-contact supplemental measure, but do not treat it as a proven skunk solution. A skunk may become accustomed to repeated disturbances, and the device does not block access to food or shelter.
Do not use mothballs or moth flakes as a routine outdoor skunk treatment. Their effectiveness outdoors is limited, and pesticide or chemical products must be used exactly as the label permits.

A skunk under a deck, shed, porch, or foundation requires more care than a skunk passing through the garden. Never seal an opening while an animal is inside. A trapped adult may die beneath the structure, and a mother may leave young behind.
- Observe the opening, preferably from a safe distance, to determine whether it is active.
- Check for young and consider seasonal wildlife guidance before closing the den.
- After confirming that the animal and young are out, use a one-way exclusion method where permitted and appropriate.
- Monitor the opening before permanently securing it with a buried, outward-bent wire barrier.
Because trapping, relocation, and exclusion rules vary by state and municipality, contact a licensed wildlife-exclusion or animal-control service when a skunk is denning beneath a structure, when young may be present, or when you cannot safely confirm that the space is empty.

Skunk safety and legal considerations
Skunks can carry rabies. Do not corner, harass, handle, or attempt to catch one. An animal that is active during the day is not automatically diseased, but unusual behavior—especially approaching people without hesitation, appearing disoriented, or showing paralysis or aggression—calls for extra caution.
If a skunk sprays, move away calmly and keep people and pets from the area. Do not use firearms or improvised chemicals. Live trapping, relocation, euthanasia, and discharge of firearms are regulated differently across states and municipalities. Local animal control or a licensed wildlife professional can explain the lawful and safer option in your area.
A practical garden plan
For most homeowners, the most sensible sequence is:
- Confirm the problem. Check whether the holes and timing are consistent with skunk activity rather than another animal.
- Remove attractants. Secure garbage, remove pet food, pick up fruit, and clear potential den cover.
- Protect the garden. Install a fence at least 2 feet high with a buried or outward-bent wire apron.
- Use plants for garden value. Add mint, marigolds, lavender, rosemary, or sage where their growing conditions suit the site, without expecting them to stop skunks.
- Inspect structures safely. Do not close a den opening until you know no skunk or young remains inside.
- Escalate when necessary. Seek local professional help for denning animals, repeated damage, or safety concerns.
The honest answer to the headline is therefore qualified: these five plants may make a garden edge more fragrant and attractive, but they are not a stand-alone skunk barrier. If keeping skunks out is the goal, invest first in exclusion and habitat modification.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will mint keep skunks out of a garden?
There is no reliable evidence that growing mint keeps skunks out. Mint may be worth trying as a supplemental aromatic plant, but use a fence and buried mesh for dependable protection.
How high should a skunk fence be?
A garden fence at least 2 feet high can limit skunk movement. The bottom edge should also be buried or bent outward, because skunks can dig beneath a fence that ends at ground level.
Are cone-shaped holes proof that skunks are present?
No. Small cone-shaped holes about 3 to 4 inches across are consistent with skunk foraging, but raccoons, armadillos, rodents, and other wildlife can create similar damage.

Not until you confirm that the skunk and any young have left. Sealing an active den can trap an animal inside or separate a mother from her young. When in doubt, contact local animal control or a licensed wildlife professional.
The Bottom Line
Plant mint, marigolds, lavender, rosemary, or sage for fragrance and garden appeal—not as a guarantee against skunks. Secure food and garbage, remove shelter, and protect beds with a properly installed fence and buried wire mesh. Those steps address the reasons skunks visit and the way they get beneath ordinary garden edging.
