Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, bush beans, and summer squash are five practical vegetables for a sunny home garden. A site with at least six hours of direct sun is a useful general starting point; fruiting crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, and squash can benefit from a longer sun window. The best choice for your garden also depends on your local climate, growing season, and available space.
What counts as full sun for a vegetable garden?
University of Maryland Extension recommends at least six hours of full sun a day, preferably more, as a general vegetable-garden baseline. For fruiting crops including tomatoes, squash, and cucumbers, NC State Extension recommends at least eight hours and says they do better with ten. These are broad extension recommendations, not a guarantee for every variety or growing condition.

- For a longer daily sun window: prioritize tomatoes, cucumbers, and summer squash; NC State Extension says fruiting crops such as these need at least eight hours and do better with ten.
- For limited ground space: compare mature plant size and growth habit. Vining cucumbers and pole beans may need a support or room to climb; bush beans are more compact.
- For containers: NC State Extension lists beans, cucumbers, peppers, squash, and tomatoes as crops that can be grown in containers. Container suitability does not mean they need equal space or will produce equal yields.
- For planting dates and variety selection: check a local extension planting calendar and recommendations for your region. Climate and growing-season length affect what will perform well and when to plant.
The cited extension recommendations identify practical crops and general growing conditions, but they do not establish a comparative yield ranking. Choose based on the sunlight, space, and growing season you can provide.
